I am not new when it comes to ridding PC's of nasty virus'...but this time one has defeated me.

My computer has been running slow and lagging severely for months now. I just haven't had the hours needed to fix it. After battling with this nightmare all weekend I have come to you for help.

First  off, svchost has overdosed on something. It is running 14 times (ranging from a mere 2,000K up to 240,000K). Just two instances are eating up over 50% of my CPU's power.

My CPU is fluctuating between 83% and 97% usage.

My memory is running at 3.15/4.00

My harddrive light is constantly on.

There was a point on Sunday when I thought I had this bugger. I ran multiple scans and cleared bad hosts from the hosts file. Now the hosts I cleared have returned with a vengeance. There is something going on that is beyond my expertise. I was about to the point where I was going to buy a new 2TB harddrive, install a fresh copy of windows, then copy my files and reinstall programs, however, I do not have my Windows 7 disk (it is in storage in another state O_o).

It is to the point where I cannot run wOw; the lag makes it unplayable. Please help oh mighty Masters.

Okay, so the scans finished early this morning. I tried posting the results before work, when I got home it was still stuck on "Saving Post..."

For some reason it won't allow me to post the results. Any suggestions? I have the logs saved all in one Notepad file on my desktop (as backup and easy access to the logs).

  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue.
  • Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.

  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes when done.

Well, it took me nearly an hour to post those logs. The internet was not responding and/or responding incredibly slow. Same with opeing the text files to copy those logs. I click open and a minute or two later it would finally open.

As far as hardware, the CPU seems to be averaging about 15% usage with occaisonal spikes above 15% depending on what I am doing. This is certainly better than the 91% it was using yesterday, but when my pc wasn't infected it would range between 2% and 7% usage with occasional spikes above the range.

SVChost does not seem to be going crazy anymore.

Still does not feel like she is back to normal yet, but definitely better than before.

I have not restarted yet, I wonder if it will remain this way after a restart. I've been trying to avoid a restart. I typically leave my computer on constantly and restart once every week or so, or whenever Windows deems an update as neccessary.

There was nothing malicious except for unwanted toolbars. No rootkits or trojans that could consume svchost usage.

Please restart the PC and let me know.

Well, things seem to be running okay for the moment. Howerver, I tried restarting before work this morning...Windows had some updates, it was at 2 of 5 when I left and when I got home 10 hours later it was still hung up on 2 of 6. O_O

Other than that it seems tolerable. CPU is still running higher than normal (20%), but it is better than it being near max as before. Still running 14 instances of svchost.

If you still have doubt about svchost.exe you can download this excellent tool and analyze the running processes

http://download.sysinternals.com/files/ProcessExplorer.zip

It gives you details about all processes including svchost and services running under it.

If you find anything suspicious, post here
