i downloaded this from microsoft and installed it after instalation was complete it checked for updates then done a scan. once finished i closed the program then it was gone only 1 thing though there is still the option to remove it in add/remove programs. the only way to run it again is to re-install but then the same thing happens all over again. while it runs there is an icon in the taskbar but it dissapears to and there is no icon on the desktop either. is it just me or is it meant to do this

Like many applications Windows Defender Installs itself in the Program Files Directory, If it has installed itself correctly then their should be a Windows Defender folder located there. This means that it has been installed.

If it has been installed try running the Windows Defender Application Directly. Its named MSASCui.exe and is located as "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe".

If this solves your problem, and Windows Defender runs, just hold down your CTRL key and drag a copy of MSASCui.exe to the STart menu. (You should be able to put a copy in the Start - All Programs - Startup Directory and Defender should load at startup.

This wont solve the problem of an incomplete install, but it may be an effective workaround.

Unlike MWAS beta, Defender does not always show itself in the system tray even though it is running in the background.

Go to Control panel and click on the icon for Software Explorers to open and run a manual scan with Defender or access tools and settings.

You can also access Defender via Start > All Programs and look for the shortcut there.
