Hi we got a new modem at home for Internet. Every other computer connects to Internet fine, and two iPhones. My HP laptop does not, but used to have no problem.

ISP trouble shooted with me and said it sounds like driver problems, he told me to redownload wifi drivers. Tried to do that but every driver I downloaded would open under a different file name which lead me to believe there are issues with my laptop. Backed up files on USB stick and wiped the hard drive clean with system recovery HP's f11 reboot.

Laptop still does not connect to wifi, only local access but connects to the Internet fine when connected to the modem directly via Ethernet. Someone please help me fix this I am a student and need my wifi back! So much trouble after upgrading our modem at home...

Hi

Please post the computer model next time. Do you happen to see any error messages when laptop is unable to connect? Is there a wireless radio button on that laptop for toggling on/off?

Download MiniToolBox and select all options.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

Hi sorry, it is a HP G50-113CA.

I will run the mini tool box and post results. There are no error messages when connecting to the Internet from wifi, I can only get local access. It says multiple networks wen trying to connect before only getting local access.

Do you have another user account and use the wifi from that account? Press Windows key + R and type cmd. Type ipconfig /flushdns then try connecting again by wireless. If no improvement, try disabling your Norton Antivirus protection features. Still no change? Reinstall the Atheros Wireless LAN driver from this link. There is also an option to change your DNS server address and using google public dns https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

Looks like your DNS servers. Go to >Control Panel>Network and Internet>Network and Sharing>Change Adapter Settings.

Right click on Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter then click properties. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

then click the properties button. Check to make sure that "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is selected. If it is you could

try changing your DNS servers, I would recommend downloading something like DNS Benchmark by the Gibson Research

Association, to test multiple DNS servers and find the fastest one for you.

I'm not sure where to find the DNS server you suggested but Google Public DNS did not work

I am starting to wondering if it is possible for me to have got some sort of "driver virus" if that is possible... I used to NEVER have problems with connecting to the internet BUT recently when I went to my friend's place I could not connect to her internet... Now, when we changed our modem I am having internet problems that I never used to have before...

The last IP configuration log for MiniToolBox is valid and complete. Is it an intermittent problem after changing modem/router? Is your internet provider  Rogers Cable? Make sure you are connecting to your own home SSID. I would remove all instances of network profile under manage wireless network in Network ans Sharing Center and start manually connecting to home wireless network again. If nothing happen, disable the network security encryption of the modem/router then see if you can connect. Try disabling your IPv6. Go to Network Connections and right click your Wifi Adapter - Properties then uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), Ok.
