i was hoping that if i waited, Norton would eventually get around to being able to remove winrscmde, but it appears it isn't coming any time soon

i see that you guys seem to be pretty successful in helping people remove this troublesome Trojan, so thank you in advance for your help.

as with others reporting winrscmde infections, i noted from my Norton:

-"High CPU usage by winrscmde" for a while; tends to come in waves

-multiple suspicious web attacks were being blocked

-i had a few blue screens occur, but the System Recovery always seemed to be able to make repairs and computer booted fine

-i ran Malawarebytes several times and it detected Trojan winrscmde, which it deletes.  however, after reboot, the "svchost.exe" (which says "winrscmde" in file description) re-appears in C:\windows.  i know from other wed searchers that Malawarebytes is not able to deal with these deeply embedded Trojans

-all in all, i think Norton has kept me from getting even more infected, as my computer seems to be running better than a lot of people posting here and elsewhere with a winrscmde problem

thanks again,

-Mark

here is my DDS.txt log.  my attach.txt is attached

oh, i forgot to add that as of mid-last week i have been unable to successfully install some Windows Security Updates

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2799494)

it downloads and tries to install, but then gives the multi-FFFFFFFFFFFF (or whatever it is) error

Also, i only double-click ran DDS.  i didn't right-click "Run as Administrator".  Please let me know if i need to do that.

Hello Mark

Welcome to The Forums!!

Around here they call me Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with these just skip it and run the next one.

-Security Check-
  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
    • Save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
    • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
-AdwCleaner-
  • Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
    • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Click on Delete.
    • Confirm each time with Ok.
    • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
    • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
    • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
--RogueKiller--
  • Download & SAVE to your Desktop RogueKiller or from here
    • Quit all programs that you may have started.
    • Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
    • For Vista or Windows 7, right-click and select "Run as Administrator to start"
    • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
    • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
    • Then Click on "Scan" button
    • Wait until the Status box shows "Scan Finished"
    • click on "delete"
    • Wait until the Status box shows "Deleting Finished"
    • Click on "Report" and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
    • The log should be found in RKreport[1].txt on your Desktop
    • Exit/Close RogueKiller+

Hello mefnj

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

  • Gringo

Gringo,

I disabled all the Norton things i could from the tray.

ComboFix started and indicated that Norton Spyware was still running.  so after disabling that, it started and ran OK.  When it was on the last screen before the log popped up, Norton popup showed up and said it was performing background tasks.  hopefully that didn't cause any issues... [Norton has a lot of "pieces". i really wish there was a single ON/OFF toggle]

total scan time was <10 minutes, no reboots

i have turned all the Norton components back on

everything seems to be running OK, too

as i am aware that the svchost.exe file is part of the winrscmde problem, i checked in c:\windows just now and the file has not shown back up (yet!  hopefully gone for good).

and here is the log

Hello mefnj

I would like you to try and run these next.

TDSSKiller

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Note** this report can be very long - so if the website gives you an error saying it is to long you may attache it

If the forum still complains about it being to long send me everything that is at the end of the report after where it says

    ==================
    Scan finished
    ==================
  • and I will see if I want to see the whole report

    Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit

    1.Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit
2.Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
3.Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
4.Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
5.Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
6.Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
7.Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
8.If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:
    • •Internet access
      •Windows Update
      •Windows Firewall
9.If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the 'fixdamage' tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot.
10.Verify that your system is now functioning normally.

If you have any problems running either one come back and let me know

please reply with the reports from TDSSKiller and MBAR

    Gringo

Gringo,

i had restarted my Norton Internet Security after the last step, and while TDSSKiller started up a Norton popup appeared and said

"TDSS rootkit removing tool was blocked from accessing your network resources."

it looked like TDSSKiller continued to open and start, but i closed it anyways as i didn't want to take a chance that something did NOT start right.

do I need to disable all the Norton components (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware) again to get this to work?

-Mark

Gringo,

after stopping Norton, TDSSKiller ran OK.  it updated itself and performed the scan.  it found 7 "threats", only one was designated as needing Cure.  it then rebooted, and TDSSKiller restarted.  it came up to the screen with the SCAN button, but i closed it at this point and did NOT re-scan. the longest log seemed to indicate that the threat was successfully quarantined/removed.

i then ran mbar, it found svchost.exe in C:\.  it rebooted computer and removed that file.  a second scan stated no threats found.

POST-SCAN Computer operation:

-Windows Update seems to open fine - i didn't select/install any updates at this time, as i wasn't sure if that was what i was supposed to do to make sure it was "working"

-Firefox - when i first opened Firefox, there was a popup that asked if i wanted to allow FireFox to make changes to this computer.  I assumed this was the result of some reset of Windows defaults, and i clicked OK.  Firefox is working fine, as that is what i am writing this with.

-IE is also working (my secondary browser).

-I do not have Windows Firewall (or it is not running) to my knowledge, as Norton is my security software -- or am is running as a default?

-no other issues that i can see at the moment  one odd thing... there was a new folder on my desktop that was named my username (Mark) and it had a bunch of folders in it that look like my user "stuff" ... but i think that was just a reset to the default desktop setting in which User Folders are shown on desktop... i made it not appear by going to desktop settings

This seems to be going OK...THANKS!  i await your further instructions.

LOGS

there were 3 separate TDSSKiller logs, but only the 1st and 3rd are pasted below.

the 2nd log was long, and the website said post was too long... it is attached

There was also a TDSSKiller_Quarantine folder created in C:\

Gringo,

Do I need to run it just like the previous post, including the Change Parameters, rebooting, etc. steps, or do I just double-click and run it?

Mark

TDSSkiller log #4 (post-reboot, post-scan) >>>>>

i tried posting and it is too big

i tried attaching .txt file but it is saying file to big -- its 438 kb

i tried zipping the original .txt file (as TDSSKiller named it) by right-clicking and selecting Send To Compressed Folder and was getting a error ("File not found or no read permission")

i opened the original .txt from C:\ in Notepad and saved it to my desktop with a new name (got rid of all the periods) and it still was saying too big to upload (still only 438 kb)

the renamed file zipped OK -- now only 70 kb -- but website still says too big to upload

i logged off bleepingcomputer and logged back on... still no luck with either the basic or advanced uploader, or with the .txt or .zip file... still website is saying file was too big to upload.

this is making me a little nervous...

Note** this report can be very long - so if the website gives you an error saying it is to long you may attache it

If the forum still complains about it being to long send me everything that is at the end of the report after where it says

==================
Scan finished
==================
  • and I will see if I want to see the whole report
