I have recently been infected with zolob. I keep getting a message in my toolbar stating that I am infected. My internet explorer home page keeps taking me to www.bestsecurityguide.com & I can't make any alterations to this hold. I use MS antispyware Beta1, Spybot & Ad-Aware. None of these seem to permanently remove the infection. I hope someone can help me. Many thanks in anticipation.

My HJT log is as follows:

Hello,

It's better to print out the next instructions or save them in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

We also need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

* Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Nothing - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - F:\WINDOWS\system32\hpA86E.tmp
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dxvid] f:\windows\system32\dxvid.exe /nocomm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Sneiyvg] C:\Program Files\Tdinba\Imkon.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ICcontrol] F:\WINDOWS\iccontrol.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ms1src] f:\program files\common files\system\ms1src.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [drsmartloadb] c:\\drsmartloadb.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MPlay64] f:\program files\common files\system\mplay64.exe /noerrorinfo
O16 - DPF: {FAFF0003-0A01-121A-A1C9-08032B23E0CC} - http://uk.global-acces.com/seed/nat3.exe

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

F:\windows\system32\dxvid.exe
C:\Program Files\Tdinba <== folder
F:\program files\common files\system\ms1src.exe
F:\program files\common files\system\mplay64.exe
F:\WINDOWS\iccontrol.exe
c:\drsmartloadb.exe

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
* Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; I need that log afterwards.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

* Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis Log,
the contents of rapport.txt which is present on your Homedrive (F:\ in your case) by using Add Reply.

Hello,

This is looking a bit better, but it looks like you forgot some steps though. I see you didn't fix the entries in hijackthis as well and forgot to delete some files..
You also forgot to disable Microsoft antispyware. I can't stress enough how important every step is.
Your system is still infected though.

So let's give it another try.

Print next instructions out or save them in notepad, because you have to perform things in safe mode again and this page won't be available then.

Place a check against each of the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Nothing - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - F:\WINDOWS\system32\hp7F03.tmp (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dxvid] f:\windows\system32\dxvid.exe /nocomm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Sneiyvg] C:\Program Files\Tdinba\Imkon.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ICcontrol] F:\WINDOWS\iccontrol.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ms1src] f:\program files\common files\system\ms1src.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [drsmartloadb] c:\\drsmartloadb.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MPlay64] f:\program files\common files\system\mplay64.exe /noerrorinfo
O16 - DPF: {FAFF0003-0A01-121A-A1C9-08032B23E0CC} - http://uk.global-acces.com/seed/nat3.exe

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Delete next files:

F:\windows\system32\dxvid.exe

F:\WINDOWS\inf\fastvideoplayer.inf
F:\WINDOWS\system32\bsxmdfqp.exe
F:\WINDOWS\system32\dxvid.exe
F:\WINDOWS\system32\fjkluapq.exe
F:\WINDOWS\system32\fvp.dll
F:\WINDOWS\system32\hznmrfer.exe
F:\WINDOWS\system32\jkujdggm.exe
F:\WINDOWS\system32\jvlwsrog.exe

F:\WINDOWS\system32\xoxmhyac.exe
F:\WINDOWS\system32\xxuphbgu.exe
F:\Documents and Settings\George\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Ssk.log

Go to start > run and type: regsvr32 /u occache.dll
(or copy and paste this in the field in start > run )
Click Ok

Now search and delete:

F:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\UERS_0001_NI57M1124NetInstaller.exe
F:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.2\UERS_0001_NI57M1124NetInstaller.exe
F:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\dba1380.exe
F:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\dba1799.exe
F:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UERS_0001_NI57M1124NetInstaller.exe

Go to start > run and type regsvr32 occache.dll
Click OK

Please hide your hidden files and folders afterwards again, because above instructions to set your system to show all files, unhide legit files and folders as well.
And I don't want you to delete them because they may look suspicious. To hide them again, just perform the above instructions in the opposite way.

Reboot your system back to normal mode and perform a new scan with Panda online.
Post the results in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Hi

Thanks for all you effort again. I did follow the steps but other than shutting down MS anti-spyware. For some reason it keeps becoming active each time I reboot the computer. I also deleted the file you stated from the hijack log - I did this in safe mode as you advised. Strange thing - on doing your most recent instructions I noticed that the fixes in safe mode using hijack this, returned in normal mode!! That explains why the scan I posted looked like I hadn't followed your instructions! Am I doing something very stupid here?!! (don't answer - I'm only a novice!). Anyway, I took a chance and did the fixes again in normal mode - they seem to have held now.

When I was going thru the deletions I did notice two .exe files in the F:\WINDOWS\Download Progam Files\... location (outside the conflict 1 & 2 folders). These were; UERS 0001_NI57M1124NetInstaller.exe and xclean_micro.exe. I also found drsmartload.exe within the CONFLICT 1 folder. Should I delete these three?

Lastly, I want to protect my computer better in the future. I am currently using MS beta1 antispyware (that worked well!!), ad-aware & spybot and Norton A/V. I need to add a better firewall than SP2 - I was thinking of Zone Alarm. I know this switches off SP2 firewalll on installation but are there any functional/compatability issues with MS Beta1? I would be really grateful for your advice.

Here's my hijack & Panda logs

Hello,

Your hijackthislog looks clean again.

Yes, but don't delete xclean_micro.exe, because that's the one from Panda online.
Delete the two others. (one of them also shows in your Panda log).
The other entries Panda shows are ok. Some cookies, and files which are already present in the Microsoft Antispyware quarantaine folder.

Well, concerning Microsoft Antispyware... actually this one doesn't exist anymore, but changed into Windows Defender: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s...re/default.mspx
That's why I rather suggest you uninstall it and install Windows Defender.
No, it won't interfere with a desktop firewall like zonealarm or any other firewall. :flowers:

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
