Hi All, I have random crashes and reboots stemming from a kernel power 41 critical error.  I have a stock ASUS U56E laptop running Windows 7, 64bit.

My laptop has:

Intel i3-2310 2.1 gig processor (It is NOT set to overclock)

4 gigs RAM

240 gig HD

There are no bug checks or mini dumps recorded.  Sometimes instead of rebooting it will just completely crash with a black screen.  I have never had a blue screen.  Sometimes it’ll crash three or four times per day.  Sometimes it’ll crash once every couple days.  It’s totally random and there’s no consistency to when it occurs.  Sometimes the laptop is idle.  Sometimes I’m typing or surfing.  It occurs on battery AND when plugged in.  The crashes are totally random but seem to be worse just after a peripheral piece of hardware has been removed from a USB port (a phone, a mouse, etc.).  However, that is NOT the only time it crashes.  It just seems it might happen more after that.  After a crash sometimes it'll reboot on its own.  Sometimes I have to push the power button to turn it back on.

A couple months ago I contacted ASUS tech support and after following their instructions they suggested I take it into their service center for diagnostics and repair.  Subsequently everything was tested, including the power supply. A new motherboard and new RAM were installed.  The hard drive checks out perfectly (after numerous tests).  When I got the laptop back it worked perfectly for about 4 weeks.  After that, the same kernel power 41 errors started again.  I then updated every driver on my laptop.  I finally thought I had success.  But about a month later the crashes started again.  I then found multiple ‘solutions’ on Google and did a number of them.  I followed the Microsoft solutions, scenario 3 fits my criteria, found here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504#method3

Everything they suggest has been done.

Here are a list of other things I have I done.

1)      Changed power options where hard drive never turns off

2)      Changed power options to never sleep by itself

3)      Changed power option to never hibernate

4)      Disabled winhttp web proxy auto discovery

5)      Disabled Flash player auto update

6)      Deleted Flash cache  and disabled hardware acceleration

7)      Disabled all software that starts on Windows start up

Should I update the bios?  This problem seems to occur a lot and there seems to be a lot of answers that seldom seem to fix anything.   I welcome any other suggestions.  I will provide any info you request that might help fix this.

Also, here is the kernel 41 error data that I get from Event Viewer:

I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE!  I have the same machine with the same issue.  Last night it crashed and would not come back up, after installing the latest MS upgrades.  I ended up opening the case and cleaning everything on the inside; its dusty here.  It worked for a few hours but had two restarts over night while it was sitting idle.  The MS waste of time post on the topic shows several other brand machines that are having the same issue, which leads me to think about a patch that has been installed.  Mine had some issues then went stable for several months and then just started failing again.  I am going to look into what patches I got at the end of the stable period and go from there.

good luck

Great timing on your post.  I had the MS updates yesterday as well.  When I turned on the laptop it CRASHED!  There has to be some sort of correlation.  Also, does your laptop have a tendency to crash when USB peripherals (a mouse, a phone, a camera, a drive, etc) are unplugged?  Mine absolutely does.

Hmmm...interesting, but not informative for me.

if you've been having errors of some kind since then...there isn't enough data posted to get a clue about the origin of the errors, IMO.

You post about kernel 41 errors, yet there is no evidence of such in the detail posted.

The detail reflects problems with paltalk, Chrome, and Windows Update.

The data doesn't reflect any critical updates prior to Dec 2012, yet the install dates from Jan 2012.  if you've been having errors of some kind since then...there isn't enough data posted to get a clue about the origin of the errors, IMO.

I have no idea what's going on with this.

But...I would start with removing all browser add-ons...and uninstall Chrome, since you also have Mozilla installed.  I would also uninstall paltalk  These items give evidence of having problems and it's up to you whether you reinstall them or not.

You reflect 1 Windows Explorer problem...when i've seen this in the past, it may have indicated malware.

You reflect duplcate installs of Trend Micro Internet Security...I'm not even sure how that is possible, since one should have overwritten the other.  In any case, I would uninstall one.

To be honest...I think that you've focused on the wrong possible problem...but I can't say just what might be the cause of what I would call the "real problem".

Maybe someone else here has a clue.

Louis,

Thanks so much for taking time to look through all that information.  I greatly appreciate it.  I've read through hundreds of threads where others have posted the same or similar issues.  Google Chrome is something that many expect to cause this issue.  I'm going to delete it.  I didn't use it that much until a year or so ago and can live without it.  Same goes for Paltalk.

Also, did you see anything in there that pointed to issues with the USB ports?  It seems like anytime I plug in a peripheral via USB once I'm done and the peripheral is unplugged I have several Kernel 41 crashes.

Hey Folks,

I removed Chrome, Trend Micro software, and Paltalk but I'm still getting Kernel 41 errors and crashes every day.  Sometimes is happens twice per day.  I've also repeatedly scanned for Malware and nothing shows up.  So, I'm reposting my latest finding with minitoolbox and Speccy.  Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Phil

Louis,

I've tried running this twice already.  However, toward the end of each scan I had the SAME crash again.  This second time I was about 40 minutes away from completion of 2.75 hour scan.

Do you think I should try running a quick scan?  I'll try the extended scan later as well.

Does the problem exists on both battery powered and AC adapter only? Can you check the ventilation if the air coming out is not that hot after an hour of continous usage? Is this your laptop specs? https://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/U56E/#specifications

Yes!  It crashes on battery AND on AC.  Totally random.  FYI, the air is warm, not hot, after an hour or so of usage.  And yes, those are my specs.  I have the 600 gig HD.

Ok folks, I have news.  I tried running the short/quick scan on my HD.  It failed miserably after about 5 or 6 seconds of trying.  I tried running the scan 4 or 5 times within a 15 minute period and they all stopped within a few seconds.  I am now guessing this is a bad hard drive.  It's even more maddening that the authorized repair shop missed this!  Am I off base here?  On top of that my laptop is now out of warranty although these issues were occurring back when it was in warranty.  Here are the results and error codes.  Any further interpretations of this would be helpful.

The drive looks fine under the SMART readings in speccy. Let's try this -

How to obtain hard drive S.M.A.R.T data on a Windows system and then paste the report into a forum post

  • Download the GSmartControl installer application:
    • Go to the GSmartControl - Downloads page.
    • Scroll part way down the page to where the current version available for download will be displayed.
      gsmartcontrolwindowsdownload.jpeg
  • Double-click the downloaded application to run it and install GSmartControl on the computer.
Note: Vista/Win7 users, right-click > Run as Administrator
  • When installation is complete, run GSmartControl:
    • Start GSmartControl from the Start > Programs menu.
  • When the interface has loaded and scanning for hard drives is complete, click on the hard drive icon to select the device.
  • Go to Device on the top menu > View Details, and a new Device Information window will open.
  • Click on the Attributes tab to display the S.M.A.R.T data values.
  • Near the bottom of the window, click on View Output and a new Smartctl Output window will open.
  • Right-click anywhere inside that window > Select All.
  • Again right-click in that selected area > Copy.
  • Now paste that in a reply to your topic.
Note: Please enclose the pasted report in CODE tags so that the spacing/formatting is preserved (to make it easier for all to read).
    • Firstly, click on the "Insert code snippet" button insertcodesnippetdetail2.jpeg
    • You will then see the "start" and "end" code tags (highlighted in dark blue/selected in the image) in the text box.
    • Click between the two tags to insert the cursor between the tags and then press <Ctrl+V> to paste the report there.

Hi JHayz,

I hope I did it correctly.  Looks like it passed.  However, I wonder why the WD software wouldn't run?  It said it failed the test every time I tried to run it.  FYI, I ran chkdsk again today and it found one error and fixed it.

Please let me know your interpretation.

Best regards and thanks to all on here for the help.  This issue is absolutely confounding!

Phil
