Hello,

I believe I have a couple of things going on (although they may be related, I'm really not sure).

When I'm on a website I will see a square popup box appear on the bottom left hand side of the screen.  It sometimes has all kinds of different advertisements in it and sometimes it just has different pictures in it - all seem to be trying to advertise something.

I also get another box popup consistanly on the right hand side of the screen that says "chitka" in it, too.

Sometimes while trying to go to a website I am redirected to a totally unrelated website.

I've now noticed that when I open a web browser (like Google Chrome or IE) the default website in the address bar is http://search.conduit.com/?SearchSource=10&CUI=UN24231064191750211&ctid=CT3287819.

The opened browser window also has MIXI.DJ logo on the page (like where the Google picture would normally show).

I've ran multiple scans using MalwareBytes and it has found and quaranteened many items but the redirecting and strange popup boxes still continue.

Whatever the virus is, it has also blocked my Windows Firewall.  I cannot access it to turn it on or off.  When I try to set it to use recommended settings I get an error code 0x80070424 message.

The DDS log I ran is pasted below and the Attach.txt file is attached per the Prep Guide request.

Any help with this (or these) viruse/s would be ever so appreciated.

Hello jls70

Welcome to The Forums!!

Around here they call me Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with these just skip it and run the next one.

-Security Check-
  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.

Hi Gringo...thanks for the quick response, that was a pleasant surprise since I'm sure you guys stay very busy.

I've ran the three applications you suggested above and the resulting logs are copied below.

One thing I forgot to mention in my original post was that my PC was doing a CHKDSK scan when it started and before I ran the three programs you requested it would just continue to redo "phase 1 of 3" over and over and I would have to press a key to force it to boot.

Since I've ran the three requested programs, when I restarted this time it ran the CHKDSK but it completed each of the 3 phases successfully and my PC booted without me having to press a key to cancel the CHKDSK.  During the CHKDSK to said it was "recovering" several "orphaned files"...when it was finished I got a really bad feeling that maybe this was part of the virus and maybe I should not have allowed the CHKDSK to run.  Hopefully this is not the case and its okay that I allowed the CHKDSK to run.  Please advise as to what you think on this one.

But, for now, here are each of the logs that resulted from the three programs you requested:

1) Security Check Log:

The RogueKiller did seem to find the Zero Access.

I tried a few websites to see how they worked and the popups are still happening.

I did notice that when I open IE it did not automatically redirect to the "search.conduit.com" site.  Google opened and looked normal (the regular google icon was there now and not the MIXI.DJ)

I tried to access the Windows Firewall again and am still getting the "error code 0x80070424" message and it still will not let me choose to turn it on or off.

Hope these descriptions help.  If you need anything else please let me know.

Thank you again, I really appreciate your help with this.

Hello Gringo,

Here is the log from the Blitzblank:

BlitzBlank 1.0.0.32

File/Registry Modification Engine native application
MoveFileOnReboot: sourceFile = "\??\c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts", destinationFile = "(null)", replaceWithDummy = 0

I noticed something in the bottom right hand corner of the desktop.   It says "Test Mode Windows 7 Build 7601".  I hate to admit this, but I do not know when this appeared or what caused it to happen.  I'm not sure it this appeared during some of the testing or if it had been there for a while.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello jls70

Open notepad. Please copy the contents of the code box below. To do this highlight the contents of the box and right click on it. Paste this into the open notepad. Save it on the flash drive as fixlist.txt

testsigning: ==> Check for possible unsigned rootkit driver <===== ATTENTION!

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

On Vista or Windows 7: Now please enter System Recovery Options.

Run FRST again like we did before but this time press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flash drive (Fixlog.txt) please post it to your reply.

Also boot the computer into normal mode and let me know how things are looking.

Hi Gringo!

Here is the fixlog.txt file:

Fix result of Farbar Recovery Tool (FRST written by Farbar) (x64) Version: 04-03-2013 01
Ran by SYSTEM at 2013-03-04 21:59:37 Run:1
Running from F:\

==============================================

The operation completed successfully.

==== End of Fixlog ====

I surfed the web and so far no popup ads!  And the "Chitka" popup hasn't appeared, either.

The "Test Mode Windows 7 Build 7601" in the bottom right corner of desktop is now gone, too.

So far it's looking much better than before!  I'll do some more searching and playing on it tomorrow and we'll see how it does.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hello jls70

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

  • Gringo

I played around on the internet for a while and there were no popups that appeared - which was awesome!! :-)

I was not redirected to any unwanted website while navigating the web.

It does seem to take longer than before for my Home Page to load when I open Internet Explorer.  The IE border appears along with the address bar but it stays blank for a minute.  Then my home page populates in the address bar and then the page loads (I've got my homepage set to yahoo).  I tried resetting the home page using Internet Options but it still seems to take a while to load.

I was able to access the Windows Firewall tonight after I ran the ComboFix.  The Firewall was set to On for both the Private and Public networks.

I thought maybe the Windows Firewall being on now might have something to do with the slowness of the home page loading, but I'm just speculating on that one.

Let me know what you think.....the popups are definately much better.

Thank you again for your help with this.

Hello jls70

I would like you to go to this page - Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode

Step 1 is going to show you how to run IE without any add/ons, If by running IE this way the problem goes away Then we can go to step 2

Step 2 will show you how to find the add/on that is causing the problem and then how to remove it

Hi Gringo,

I read the article you linked me to in the last post.  I followed Step 1 and put IE into "No Add-ons" mode.

I thought it might have helped a little, so I continued with Step 2 and disabled the Add-Ons down the list and tried accessing IE after each disable.

Unfortunately, I now don't think this helped much.  When I first open IE it still takes a while to launch my homepage.  Once the homepage is launched I can navigate to other websites and they seem to load fairly quickly.

The slowness seems to be worse on initial opening of IE.

Do you think I'm just being paranoid and nervous that the virus may still be lerking about?

BTW, I've played around alot on websites while disabling and enabling the Add-ons and there have been no popups or redirects at all...which is awesome!! :-)

Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate your time and efforts.

Hi Gringo,

I reset the IE per your last instructions and things seem to be working better.  It still seems a little slower on the intial load of IE, but it may just be me.  Once it loads the first time, subsequent website load fine.

I've played around on the internet and there have been no popups or redirects for several days now.  Things are working much better.

Do you have any recommendations for a good virus protection that I could use??

Thanks again, jls70.
