Hi,

I really hope someone can help me. I started out in the chat and received some good advice. I was told to post in the forum if it didn't work. Unfortunately, it didn't.

Specs:

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 circa 2011

Intel Core 2 Duo processor

I've tried everything I can think of. Last summer, I ran a registry cleaner on my PC. I know, I know - big mistake. Got the BSOD, everything went haywire. A friend of mine who knows computers helped me out and got it running again, but my PC has never been quite the same. Within the past month or so, my internet has decided that it doesn't want to connect right away when I log on. It shows the blue loading wheel over the connection meter in the tray, but it just sits there for 2 or more minutes and doesn't do anything. It eventually connects, but it used to connect instantly. I have no idea what is wrong - I have done restore points, tweaked my startup programs and services, run Windows diagnostics, started in safe mode w/networking to see if it was another program, nothing helps. I've also noticed that Event Viewer has a lot of errors at startup/login, but I have no idea what they mean or if they're related to the internet issue. Sometimes when I log in I hear an error sound, too.

Startup and login seem to take an unusually long time, too. I'm not sure if this is related or not. I know some computer stuff, but I'm in over my head at this point. If you need more information (logs, installed programs, etc.) I will be happy to post, but I don't even know where to start. Please help!

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
Sounds like a rouge registry cleaner alright. Since it has been slow ever since this may be a malware issue rather than a slow computing issue. Regardless we will need to see the event logs to know more. A specialist can tell you more, but likely you will be running MiniToolBox or similar to cleanup and give us those event logs. :)
You can post them right here in the forum.

I am noticing right away some issues which will affect boot time, but let's look and see if any of those services got modified...

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.

Make sure the following options are checked:
Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center
Windows Update
Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Once we get those we can see what we have to work with. :D

Just to show you one of the errors you're likely getting on startup -

Name: SBRE
Description: SBRE
Class Guid: {8ECC055D-047F-11D1-A537-0000F8753ED1}
Manufacturer:
Service: SBRE
Problem: : This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)
Resolution: The device is installed incorrectly. The problem could be a hardware failure, or a new driver might be needed.
Devices stay in this state if they have been prepared for removal.
After you remove the device, this error disappears.Remove the device, and this error should be resolved.

This seems to be the result of a corrupt Lavasoft Adaware installation, see here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/469539/sbre/
Basically you can use Autoruns to remove that from startup and speed your boot time a bit.

There's actually 3 of these which need fixing:

Error: (03/02/2013 06:57:10 PM) (Source: Service Control Manager) (User: )
Description: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AFS
MrFilter
SBRE

I am not sure what MrFilter is, perhaps someone else can enlighten us.

Some of your services also did not come up as Microsoft which is why the other two logs requested will provide us with information if malware messed them up.

Yes, the SBRE thing is one of my errors. I don't think I've ever installed Lavasoft Adaware. Can you walk me through fixing that?

I think MrFilter has something to do with my CD-ROM drive, but I'm not positive I have no idea what AFS is for. Internet searches have not turned up anything. Here are the logs you requested:

Went ahead and did the Speccy thing that I see other forum users posting, just in case it's relevant.

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/HHenaVIiBf7KEjFHwW2DxYX

And downloaded Autoruns and here is the log file for that, too. I figure if you need it, it will be here. Thank you so much for your help!

Since my last message, I have run a disk check and the Windows Fixer thing from Tweaking.com, and Malwarebytes. I also updated the driver for my wireless thing (Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000). Still no improvement, and now Windows isn't finding my installed Antivirus, and it says Windows Defender has been turned off, but when I click to turn it on, it just takes me to the system32 folder and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do there.

I hope I haven't been forgotten! I still need help with this.

Thanks!

Update: Installed a different antivirus (AVG Free) and now Win7 is fine with it. Also fixed Windows Defender - the other av I installed (Avira) had disabled the service. Turned it back on and Action Center is happy now.

I really still need help with the slow startup issue - the user who replied indicated that there were issues, but I don't know what to do now. Please help!!!

Ok - I ran SUL as you suggested. There was only one entry (RealPlayer scheduler), which I disabled. What comes next?

An update and list of the current problems:

When I started up this afternoon that the wireless issue seems to have resolved itself. It connected immediately as usual. I have no idea what made it start working right, but I'm happy about it. So, I guess you don't have to worry about that.

1. Boot up and log in seem to take abnormally long. I have disabled every single unnecessary startup program that I can.

2. Event Viewer is still showing the same errors that I discussed above: missing drivers, trying to connect to shared folders that have been deleted, and other recurring issues that I don't understand because I don't speak Technologese. :)

I mention the Event Viewer because it seems to me (please correct me if I'm wrong) that if the computer is looking for all these things it can't find, then that would be what is making it slow. CCleaner is also showing a lot of registry errors, but I am afraid to run the cleaner because of my issues last year. I don't know if this would affect it either.

I really appreciate all the help that I have gotten on Bleeping Computer! You guys are great! :)

Ok, run REVO and see if there is anything SunBelt that can be removed.

Revo Uninstaller:

1.Please download Revo Uninstaller.
2.Extract the ZIP file to a folder and run revouninstaller.exe from there! (You can copy that folder to an USB Mass storage drive and use it without any installation required!)
3.There are two ways to uninstall programs with Revo Uninstaller:
Important: Please, try to close the application you want to uninstall first!
Select the application in the list of installed applications and press the Uninstall button in the toolbar.
Right-click the application and click the Uninstall command in the displayed menu. Follow the instructions.

-Security Check-

  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save
  • it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Please Download TDSSkiller
Launch it.
Click on change parameters-Select TDLFS file system
Click on "Scan".
Please post the LOG report(log file should be in your C drive)

Do not change the default options on scan results.

Hello, please uninstall Winpatrol and see if thatis the issue..

Use the Add/Remove/Uninstall applet or the  WinPatrol Removal Program.

Do not stay on the net too long without protection.

ADW Cleaner

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
•Close all open programs and internet browsers.
•Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
•Click on Delete.
•Confirm each time with Ok.
•You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
•Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
•You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Hi, boopme - sorry for the long silence.

My friend who does computers came over on the 10th and took my laptop home with him to work on it. He was able to fix all the issues, except for one error in Windows Event viewer about missing drivers. I'd be eternally grateful if you'd take a crack at it, but if not - it seems to be running fine now.

Here is the log for the error we can't fix:
