Posted 01 March 2013 - 10:23 PM

I use an assembled desktop with an 1.5 Tb Western Digital hard drive,Intel
Core i3 3.2Ghz processor and 4 Gb RAM running Windows XP SP3. Antivirus and
anti-spyware: Symantec Endpoint Protection 11; Spybot Search and
Destroy;Zonealarm Free Firewall;Microsoft Security Essentials.
 I used to have Ad-Aware Free ver.9 and in mid January 2013 it
identified the tcpip.sys file as being infected with a trojan which it called
Win32.Trojan.Agent. I uploaded the file with Virustotal where 5/46 programmes
identfied a Trojan:

eSafe    Win32.Trojan

Ikarus    Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agenttiny

nProtect    Trojan/W32.Agent.361600.B

TheHacker    Trojan/Spy.Zbot.jf

TrendMicro-HouseCall    TROJ_GEN.F47V1205

2. I replaced the system image with an earlier version but the Virustotal
result was identical. Thereafterm I replaced tcpip.sys from a
Windows XP CD and scanned again with Virustotal. The Hacker identified it as
Trojan/Spy.Zbot.yw. Earlier it had identified tcpip.sys as
Trojan/Spy.Zbot.jf.The four other programmes which had positives earlier, viz.
eSafe, Ikarus,nProtect,TrendMicro-Housecall found nothing. Virusscan.Jotti
found nothing. However The Hacker in Virscan.org found Trojan/Spy.Zbot.yw just
as it had in Virustotal.

3. I used online/downloadable scanners from TrendMicro-Housecall, nProtect,
E-set smart security F-Secure, Microsoft Safety Scanner and Kaspersky without a
positive finding. I uploaded tcpip.sys to the virus analysis centres of
Fortinet, Kaspersky and Avira all without a positive finding for malicious
code.
As I found Ver. 10 of Ad-Aware intrusive, I did not install it again to check
tcpip.sys.

4. As advised by Bleeping Computer moderators I did the following :

I used TFC.exe to clean the temporary files, scanned with Microsoft Security
Essentials, Symantec Endpoint Security and Eset. Except Eset, neither of the
other two programmes found a positive. Here is the result of the latest Eset
scan in bold letters: D:\Progsetters\zlsSetup_70_483_000_en.exe
 a variant of Win32/AdInstaller application    cleaned by
deleting – quarantined

 In Virustotal, The Hacker
continued to find Trojan/Spy.Zbot.yw as before.

5. Then  I downloaded DDS. The scan is pasted
below and attached as well.

    Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

    Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

    Be careful not to install malware posing as Java update!
    Important read this blog.

    Quoted from the page.
    "In light of the recent events surrounding Java, users must seriously consider their use of Java. Do they really need it? If yes, make sure that users follow the steps we recommended and get the security update directly from the official oracle website." at:

    How to disable Java in your browsers

    You can manually check your present version and update as recommended.

    If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

    Java™ 6 Update 24
    Java 7 Update 9

    Java 7 update 10 introduced important new security controls
    You can read about it here.

    Note
    Java security update installs Ask Toolbar by default -- a single click in a multi-step installer.
    I suggest that your un-check the box "Install the Ask Toolbar" before proceeding.
    ===

    Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in old version of Adobe Flash Player please get the latest version.

    Adobe has released security updates for Adobe Flash Player 11.6.602.168 and earlier versions for Windows, Adobe Flash Player 11.6.602.167 and earlier versions for Macintosh, and Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.270 and earlier versions for Linux.

    On the top of the page you will be given an opportunity to download the version for your operating system.
    Make sure you select appropriate version.

    You will also have an option to install the Free! McAfee Security Scan Plus Un-check the box if you are NOT using McAfee's virus protection software.

    For the users of Internet Explorer download version 11.
    ===

    Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
    Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus - optional" this is not required if you are not a McAfee subscriber. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

    When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.
    ===
    Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.  It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

    • Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.

    **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

    Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

    When finished, it shall produce a log for you.  Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

    Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

    Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

    Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.
    ===

    Please post the log and let me know what problem persists.

    Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

    Driver::
    MpKsl2feab150
    AIDA32Driver
    F-Secure Standalone Minifilter

    ClearJavaCache::

    Save this as CFScript.txt on your desktop.

    Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
    Then post the resultant log.

    Let me know what problem persists.

    If all is well:

    Time for some housekeeping
    The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

    Click Start > Run  and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:

    ComboFix /Uninstall
    ===

    To remove AdwCleaner.

    Please double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    Click on Uninstall.
    Confirm with Yes.

    If you decide to keep the AdwCleaner tool make sure to delete your version and download the latest before running it.

    Delete the other tools we used.
    You can Keep the DDS tool as most forum will ask to see a log before suggesting a fix.

    Thanks. I approached Bleeping Computer because tcpip.sys was persisently identified by Virustotal (actually by a single engine The Hacker) as Trojan/Spy.Zbot.yw. Do you think it is a good idea to upload tcpip.sys to Virustotal again? If The Hacker continues to find Trojan/Spy.Zbot.yw, can we now be more confident that it is false positive?

    I ask this as there were not a lot of problems with the machine except for the occasional freezing of the internet.

    If the ctpip.sys was corrupted it would have been identified by ComboFix and replaced with a good copy of one was available on your system.

    Submit it to Virustotal and will see.

    Below is the Virustotal log. Clean in The  Hacker engine as well. I will now follow your instructions on removing some of the programmes installed for checking the machine. I must thank you very much for the patient assistance over several days.
