So, my computer has been starting to act up. Every time i turn it on I get a BSOD, it restarts, i choose repair system, it restarts and works perfectly fine. That is untill the next time i turn it on, same procedure every time. Ive had related issues like this in the past with BSOD, and messages like IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL. The problems also always seems to be initiated by me plugging in my USB harddrive.

Figuring it could have something to do with my graphics card I checked the device manager. Under IRQs I find ACPI compliant system is listed about 100 times, is this normal?

Would appreciate any clues as to what the problem could be.

  Hello RandomC,

It would be helpful to gather a little different information about the problem computer (minidumps, log files, etc.).  If you are interested, please follow the instructions in Step # 1:

1. )  Please follow this link:  BSOD Posting Instructions Windows 8 - Windows 7 - Vista.

  • Follow all instructions with the exception of:
    • Create a new thread HERE and attach the file(s) after step 4
  • Note: Both files, autoruns and JCGriff2 BSOD collection app, of Step 1 need to be in the Documents folder.

Next, Upload the zipped folder to a File Sharing website of your choosing because Bleeping Computer has a 512 K only upload limit and this file will be much larger.

2.)  From your published Speccy Snapshot:

CPU:
AMD Phenom II X4 940: 65 °C
According to here - Maximum operating temperature for your AMD CPU is 55°C - 62°C

Usually if the CPU get too hot, the system shuts down to protect itself.   This may in fact have nothing to do with your BSODs but is worth mentioning.  When was the last time the inside of the tower was cleaned?  Beware of opening the tower if the computer is still under warranty.

Hard Drive
Disk Letter: C:
Size: 596GB
Used Space: 547GB (92%)
Free Space: 50GB (8%)

For general system maintenance as well as optimal hard drive performance, I suggest that you free up more space on Drive C.  15%-20% free space would be better.

Regards,
Brooks

First of all, thank you for your reply!

The computer was built by me, the interior hasnt been cleaned for quite some time. I have however had some (minor) problems with the temperature of both the CPU and GPU from scratch due to the chassis. This have never been an issue bfore however.

Hello,

I have however had some (minor) problems with the temperature of both the CPU and GPU from scratch due to the chassis.

1.)  Maybe a good cleaning plus a re-application of thermal paste on the CPU would help.

Five "Bug Check A's" blame Neatgear wireless driver:

2. )  Windows 7 has had many issues with USB wireless network cards and this is no doubt complicated when the device is using Vista age drivers.

Try to find an update for your NETGEAR WNA3100 N300 Wireless USB Adapter because  these drivers are implicated in most of your BSODs.

Thank you very much for your assistance!

Ive managed to update the drivers for both the wireless adapter and graphics card. I havent been able to update the BIOS though. When downloading the updater I get a message that the program is not compatible with my current OS. This is odd since ive downloaded the correct updater for windows 7 64bit.

You might install this update as well:

  • ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Win7 32&64-bit as the 2005 version is a known cause of BSODs.

You can update the BIOS via ASUS EZ Flash 2 from within the BIOS itself.

  • If interested, download your motherboard manual and refer to section 2.8.1 (page 2-26) for the few steps involved.
  • Basically you download the current BIOS and extract the XXXXXXXXXXXXX.Rom file to a USB flash drive.
  • Boot the computer with the flash drive attached and enter BIOS Menu by pressing <Del> key.
  • Arror over to Tools (top menu), then select ASUS EZ Flash 2 and press<Enter>.
  • Follow the instructions.

Warning: Updating BIOS should not be taken lightly.  If performed incorrectly, it can leave the computer inoperable.

Ok, so Ive installed the lastest updates for the GTX and wireless adapter. When I power on the computer after shuting it down I still get the same BSOD. The only way to access windows is to do a system restore as previously mentioned, resulting in the recently updated drivers to revert to the old ones.

Im starting to consider doing fresh install and wiping the HD clean, do you think this might be a solution or could it make the problem worse?

RandomC,

As a test, is it possible to uninstall the Netgear USB wireless device and run on Ethernet wired connection for a few days?   No blue screens would confirm that the Netgear USB wireless device was at fault.  Windows 7 has problems with USB wireless cards.

Can you attach any new minidumps with dates after 2/27/13?

Brooks

I tried uninstalling the software for the wireless adapter and havent had a single BSOD since then.

Thank you very much for your assistance!

Hello,

It looks like the Netgear USB wireless device has been re-installed.  Did the BSODs start after it was re-installed?

3/8/13 Bug Check is a 3B and blames nVidia graphics driver.

Did you update the nVidia Driver to the Feb 2013 version?

Potentially problematic software:

1.)  Update the ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Win7 32&64-bit.
  • It can be found under "Utilities" on the download page for your motherboard.

2.)  sptd.sys Tue Nov 23 06:47:37 2010 (4CEBA9D9)
SCSI Pass Through Direct Host - Daemon Tools (known BSOD issues with Win7)
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=sptd.sys

Please uninstall Daemon Tools LIte.  It  uses a driver called sptd.sys (scsi pass through direct) which is a know cause of BSODs.

  • First, uninstall DAEMON Tools via Control Panel -> (view: by large icons) Programs and features.
  • Second, since the sptd.sys is frequently left on the system after uninstall, please run this Installer and Uninstaller Tool.
    • Choose the appropriate x86.exe or x64.exe file.
  • If sptd.sys is found, please click "Uninstall."  Restart the computer.
