missing .exe extension

I am unable to launch any program beacause they are missing the .exe extension.  There are 5 users on this computer and it is only happening on my son's log in.  Is there a freeware program available to clean this up.  Or is there other deeper registry problems?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
