Running Vista SP2

MBAM Pro

Avast Free antivirus.....

--------------------------------------------------------

Hello, to whomever is willing to help.

I seem to have a major system slowdown, on a normally bulletproof desktop. It all started after loading BItDefender antivirus (paid) and Tune-up Utilities 2013 (paid).....ever since then, my computer has been running poorly.....Ive removed Bitdefender, and Tune-up Utilities, but computer is still lagging big time, and I can only access the web if I disconnect AVAST antivirus (most likely didnt setup the exceptions properly......Ive run MBAM, and have included the last few logs with this thread, but am looking for the best solution short of reinstalling Vista (since my DVD drive no longer works)

Thank you in advance for any/all advice

Bradford,

well, files are too large to upload, so I will try to cut and paste here....

From the speccy report :

Name: Intel Core 2 Duo E7200
Average Temperature: 67 °C

The max. temperature is 74 for your processor. So the computer is experiencing overheating problems. When was the last time it was dusted/maintenance cleaning?

C3 Hardware ECC Recovered: 047 (026) Data 000279D4AD
C5 Current Pending Sector Count: 100 (100) Data 0000000001
C6 Uncorrectable Sector Count: 100 (100) Data 0000000001
The hard drive is also flag with a critical error that could mean it is beginning to fail or become unreliable in the future. Backup your data while it is still bootable.

When was the last time it was dusted/maintenance cleaning?

Computer was taken apart and cleaned about a year ago.....(by me).......and although I have a good sense of computers and their operation, I am sure I was not thorough enough with my efforts. Did you notice anything else as far as internal conflicts, missing registry info etc?

Thanks a million for your advice.

Hello,as it appears your HDD is about to fail I would like to give you some important info about your infections.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can'
t guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

Starting over by wiping your drive, and reformatting it removes everything and ensures no remnants of malicious files are left behind.

When reformatting due to malware infection, you can back up all your important documents, personal data files, photos to a CD or DVD drive, not a flash drive or external hard drive as they may become compromised in the process. The safest practice is not to backup any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), dynamic link library (*.dll), autorun (.ini) or script files (.php, .asp, .htm, .html, .xml ) files because they may be infected by malware. Avoid backing up compressed files (.zip, .cab, .rar) that have executables inside them as some types of malware can penetrate compressed files and infect the .exe files within them. Other types of malware may even disguise itself by hiding a file extension or adding to the existing extension as shown here (click Figure 1 to enlarge) so be sure you look closely at the full file name. If you cannot see the file extension, you may need to reconfigure Windows to show file name extensions. Then make sure you scan the backed up data with your anti-virus prior to to copying it back to your hard drive.

If your CD/DVD drive is unusable, another word of caution if you are considering backing up to an external usb hard drive as your only alternative. External drives are more susceptible to infection and can become compromised in the process of backing up data. I'm not saying you should not try using such devices but I want to make you aware of all your options and associated risks so you can make an informed decision if its worth that risk.

Again, do not back up any files with the following file extensions: exe, .scr, .dll, .ini, .htm, .html, .php, .asp, .xml, .zip, .rar, .cab as they may be infected.

If you need additional assistance with reformatting or partitioning, you can start a new topic in the appropriate forum.

I would say that the best bet would be to reformat the hard-drive (if you think it would make it through the process)......If the HDD is showing signs of being on its last leg as you say, would it make sense to even format the hard-drive, or replace it?......I do not have the use of the BD drive, so not sure how I could possibly reload windows back on the machine....I also have a WD MyBookLive 4TB NAS, that I have to assume is compromised as well?

Let me know what you would suggest as my best path.....Throw this out?

Never a dull moment.....

Thanks again for all help!

As mentioned by jhayz looks like the drive is going to die. I really posted info about your security problem and how to back up files for reformatting but i meant that as just to be able to get a back up of anything vauable.

Considering my BD drive no longer functions, and I should not backup to my (possibly infected) WD MyLiveDuo NAS, what would you suggest for a backup solution?

Thanks very much

I would only address or reiterate the high temperature readings. Being that you were able to backup/reinstall/replace the hard drive BUT not able to resolve thermal events, it is most likely the motherboard and other components such as the new hard drive/reinstall will eventually face a second coming or much worst case scenario in the future.
