What I thought would be a simple project has turned into a major chore. Recently, my old wireless router died so I purchased the D-LINK DIR-615 model to replace it. So far I have not been able to get it set up and confirgured properly with a working internet connection.

One of the problems seems to be that I am not running the router through a modem (as the installation instructions assume) but rather my internet is fed through a lan cable that I need to hook directly to the router box itself. This is how my old wireless network was set up so I assume it will work for the new router as well.

I am running a Dell Vostro 3000 laptop, with Windows 7.

If anyone can point me in the right direction for me to get started I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Brent

Please post if the dlink is connected directly to a modem on a home network setup. To enable and setup wireless, both the router and modem must be connected by wired on the single WAN port for the dlink router and the modem. Go to your browser and type 192.168.0.1 on url box. Type Admin and hit Enter under password. The LAN setup should be DHCP enabled by default then going to wireless network settings, checkmark enable wireless and choose your security mode settings and password. Save settings.

The dlink is not connected to a modem or a home network. So I guess I am asking how I can get the dlink to work wirelessly without using a modem.

Currently, I access the internet through a LAN feed that I hook directly into my computer. I would like to set things up so that I can hook the LAN Feed into the dlink and then my laptop can sit on my desk without wire every where or taken out of range of the LAN cord while still accessing the internet.

We previously had a dlink set up this way but it has died and I am struggling to get the new dlink set up the same way.

Oh, I also dowloaded and ran the tool box scan as mentioned in one of the sticky threads. I am not sure if it will be of any help but here are the results.

Good news! The network is set up and the wifi is fixed! So I should correct some of the confusing terminology that I was told today was wrong. First, I guess I do have what you could call a modem box. It is mounted outdoors so it is not your "typical" modem sitting right beside your computer. Also, I thought I was close to getting the network set up but was still having trouble getting the internet working on the router itself. Turns out, that the date and time were set incorrectly. A buddy of mine said that sometimes when these things are off on electronics they will not work properly. Who knew? Anyway, reset the date and time correctly and it worked like a charm. So sorry, for the confusing terminology on the modem (I am not a computer guy) and thanks for your help and patience. Hopefully, there will be no more issues in the future.
