Frequent BSODs

My computer has been experiencing BSODs on a regular basis ever since I bought it. However, I feel that the frequency has gone up seriously when I installed driver updates a couple months ago. At this point, I'm getting BSODs almost every single day.

I have taken some pictures of the BSOD screens, and as you can see, the crash dump file is never created. I have manually checked the minidump folder and it is also empty.

Hello,

If we could gather a little more information about the problem computer, it might prove helpful in pointing toward a solution.

1. )  Please follow this link:  BSOD Posting Instructions Windows 8 - Windows 7 - Vista.

  • Follow all instructions with the exception of:
    • Create a new thread HERE and attach the file(s) after step 4
  • Note: Both files, autoruns and JCGriff2 BSOD collection app, of Step 1 need to be in the Documents folder.

Next, Upload the zipped folder to a File Sharing website of your choosing because Bleeping Computer has a 512 K only upload limit and this file will be much larger.   


2. )  To help us get a better look at your computer's hardware, please download and install Speccy by Piriform. (mirror site)

  • Run Speccy and from the top menu, select File --> Publish Snapshot.  Click "Yes" to proceed.
  • Click, Copy to Clipboard and  paste this address into your next post.

3. )  Please download MiniToolBox by Farbar, save it to your Desktop, then run it.

  • Check the following checkbox:
    • List Installed Programs
  • Then click Go.
    • Highlight the contents of  Result.txt.  
    • Copy (Ctrl + C), then Paste (Ctrl + V)  the contents of this file into your next post.

The hard drive is showing signs of wear.  Free space on the system drive is only 15%10-15% free space is the minimum required from a performance and maintenance stand-point.  If you can, try to free up more space.

These error appear frequently in your System Events log:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR2.
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1.



Do you attach an external drive?  It has a bad block (sector defects).

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR5.

In view of these errors and the nature of the STOP 0x0000007A Bug Check, you should  start by testing the hard drive.

Caution: It is possible that by performing the hard drive tests below, data loss could occur.  Please make a backup of any important data on the system hard drive before proceeding.

1.)  How to test the hard drive:

  • Download SeaTools for DOS
    • Burn the "iso" file to create a bootable CD. (See Free Iso Burner)
    • Boot the computer from the CD.
    • Click Basic Tests from SeaTools top menu.
    • Run Long test.
  • A Fail in either the Short or Long test indicates a failing hard drive.

2. )  Please perform a Check Disk on the hard drive.

  • Check both boxes:
    • Automatically fix file system errors.
    • Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
  • For any drive that show the message: Windows has made corrections to the file system, please run check disk again.

3. )  Please post the Check Disk log:

  • In the search box type "Event" and click on "Event Viewer" in top column.
  • Click on "Windows Logs" -->"Application."  
  • Click the "Source" tab ( top, right) to alphabetize that column.
  • Arrow down to "Wininit." It will be an Event ID: 1001.
  • Select the most recent Check Disk report.  
  • Double click on it and select the "Copy" button. This will copy the report to the clipboard.
  • Please paste this report into your next post.

In according with your advice, I have freed up 10GB more of space.
 
Yes, I do often attach an external hard drive, and I have noticed that it sometimes has errors while copying multiple files. Sometimes, after copying a random amount of files, the process will halt, and it becomes impossible to cancel the copying as well.
 
When I ran Seatools, the menu did not detect any drives, so I was unable to run any tests.
 
Below is the Check Disk log.

Hello,

The check disk report looks fine.  

1.)  Regarding SeaTools for DOS not recognizing the hard drive, you might try to install and run SeaTools for Windows.  This version requires Microsoft .NET Framework v4.0 be installed.  Run the Long Test.

2.)  Remove and Rebuild the Page File:

  • Click Start and type: sysdm.cpl in the search box.  Click on sysdm.cpl at top of column.
  • Click the Advanced tab | click Performance Settings button | click Avanced tab | click Virtual memory Change button.
  • Click No paging file | click Set button |  Yes to messagebox | OK | OK | Apply |Restart the computer.
  • Follow Steps #1 and 2 above | check Automatically manage page file size for all drives | click Set button | OK | OK | OK | Manually restart the computer.  The page file will now be rebuilt.

   
3.)  Since a bad memory module can be the cause of this error message, you should  test computer memory.  It is best to test memory outside the Windows operating system, so please follow this post: Windows 7 - RAM - Test with Memtest86+ to either create a bootable CD (Method 2)  or bootable USB flash drive (Method 1) to run the test.

  • Once the computer is booted from the CD or USB flash drive, MemTest86+ will start automatically and continue until you stop it by pressing the ESC key.
  • My recommendation would be to run MemTest86+ overnight; 12 hours rather than just 7 passes.
    • There should be NO errors reported.
    • The test can be stopped by pressing the ESC key as soon as an error is reported or after a suitable testing period without errors .
  • Please let us know if any errors are detected.

 

4.)  If you haven't recently, please update virus definitions and run a full scan with both Norton's Anti-virus and Malwarebytes Antimalware; one at a time.

Hi Artrooks,
 
I installed Seatools for Windows, which did recognize my drive. I ran the long test and the drive passed.
 
I have also followed your instructions to rebuild the page file, and ran the memory test for around 11 hours (8 passes) without any errors. And I have scanned my computer with both Norton and Anti-MB (both scans turned up clean). 
 
Meanwhile, my computer is continuing to experience BSODs, which occur even when logging in and waking from hibernation.
 
Additionally, regarding the bad sector in my external hard drive, how would I fix this?

Any minidump files? (C:\Windows\Minidump) or is there one Memory.dmp file? (C:\Windows)

You have checked most of the usual causes.  It's quite possible that the controller on the motherboard is the issue.  No way to test without replacing the board.   If you can easily access the hard drive on the laptop, I would carefully unplug it from it's connection and then replug, to make sure that the connection is snug.  Unplug A/C cord and remove laptop battery before attempting hard drive removal.  

Additionally, regarding the bad sector in my external hard drive, how would I fix this?


Do you you know the external hard drive manufacturer?  If not, check in Device manager when the drive is plugged in.

You can perform a Check Disk on the external drive.  This should start immediately.  No computer reboot needed.
  • Check both boxes:
  • Automatically fix file system errors.
  • Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

I just reviewed the Speccy Snapshot regarding RAM Memory.  It reports that your computer has 2 slots and 2 memory modules installed.  It only reports Slot #1 with a 2 GB module installed.  No Slot #2 mentioned. This could very well be a Speccy error.  If you feel comfortable and have easy access to the memory, try removing and re-seating both Ram modules.  Take precautions to avoid static electricity when handling RAM.

Hi Artrooks,

 

No, as usual there is no dump file. Actually, I don't know if this is relevant, but after my computer blue screens, it never actually reboots either. I have to manually turn it off via the power button. To check this I once left it by itself (with the blue screen) for around 8 hours, and it still did not do anything.

 

My external hard drive is manufactured by Iomega.

 

I will try your suggestions regarding the hard drive and the RAM. Just to make sure, about the RAM, how would I go about specifically avoiding static electricity? I usually do not experience any at all.

 

If all else fails, would it be prudent to contact Sony for repairs, since the computer is still within the 1st year warranty?

Yes.

As a matter of fact, if it's still under warranty, I wouldn't remove the memory or the hard drive as that may void their warranty.  Start a conversation with Sony.  Give them a link to this post if necessary.
