My rather new Sony Vaio started having BSOD crashes, usually (but not always) after being asleep.  After the BSOD, the restart would fail, with a message saying the operating system could not be found.  But, after a couple restarts or a cold reboot, it would find it and start without problem.  I reset the bios to defaults, did a system restore to before the crashes started- no luck.  To make matters more complicated, the BSOD flash so quickly I don't get error codes, and no matter what I do (check pagefile size/location, system settings), my computer doesn't make a dump file. The event viewer only lists a critical error that the system rebooted without cleanly shutting down first.  I called Sony, they had me run one of their hard drive check programs (not chkdsk and it passed), and then made me reformat/recover using the hidden partition and their recovery software.  Besides the annoyance of the clean reformat and all my software settings etc not restoring quite right, three days after the reformat and I have another BSOD, and again, no .dmp file or any other clues (and of course, all the previous error reports got wiped).

I have a  jcgriff2 file I can attach if needed, but not performance monitor report because it keeps timing out.

specs:

Sony Vaio running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (OEM, from the recovery partition)

Intel Core i5 @2.5GHz

6Gb RAM

699Gb Hitachi SATA HD (only 19% full)

Since I know nothing about things messing with the BIOS or hardware accessibility, I wanted to know if this could be caused by something other than an actual hardware problem.  My current guess is a wonky HD connection, but I don't know how to show that even if that is the case.

Thanks!

Hello weezerific,

A "rather new Sony Vaio" still having problems after following Sony Support's instructions should be persued with Sony.  Whatever they suggested, hasn't worked and they should be made aware of that.  That is what a warranty is for.

I agree, but since I called them again and they basically told me they didn't know, I thought input from different experts might be helpful.  Thanks anyways.

I would be happy to take a look at the JCGriff2 collection, but without  any ".dmp" files the information revealed may be limited.  If the BSOD occurs before the page file is loaded, there will be no dump file.

Is the JCGriff2 collection from the initial install or the re-install?

1.)  You will have to Upload the zipped JCGriff2 folder to a File Sharing website of your choosing because Bleeping Computer has a 512 K only upload limit and this file will be much larger.

2. )  To help us get a better look at your computer's hardware, please download and install Speccy by Piriform. (mirror site)

  • Run Speccy and from the top menu, select File --> Publish Snapshot.  Click "Yes" to proceed.
  • Click, Copy to Clipboard and  paste this address into your next post.

3. )  Please download MiniToolBox by farbar, save it to your Desktop, then run it.

  • Check the following checkbox:
    • List Installed Programs
  • Then click Go.
    • Copy the result (Result.txt) by clicking Edit from top menu -> Select all, then Edit -> Copy.
    • Please Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post.

Brooks

Thank you!!  After spending another couple hours with Sony's tech support, who don't seem to figure out what's wrong but rather just run all the typical reset steps, I'm more than a little frustrated.

Also, I managed to get off the most recent BSOD the error code 0x0..7a, but not the rather useful subsequent codes.  Maybe helps a little.  Also, someone suggested I could add a microsoft hotfix that enables minidump files without a pagefile?  Would that work if this is crashing before the pagefile loads, or would it still be turning off before anything is recorded?

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/rceutQnNEO0kLOZtIA4jNcS

I just re-ran the jcgriff program, so it's from after the re-install. Before I was relying on sony's tech support- but at this point I've had 2 more BSODs, so if there's any record at all, it should be in there.

weezerific,

I was just stressing that you keep a good "paper trail" with Sony regarding the BSOD problem.   A new computer shouldn't be functioning like this.

Also, someone suggested I could add a microsoft hotfix that enables minidump files without a pagefile?

That hotfix is for a system without a paging file.  Your computer has a page file and appears to be setup correctly to make memory and minidump files (per attached "$_WMIC_recoveros.txt").

the most recent BSOD the error code 0x0..7a

STOP 0x0000007A: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
Usual causesMemory, Paging file corruption, File system, Hard drive, Cabling, Virus infection, Improperly seated cards, BIOS, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack

Knowing at least one of the error codes, we can try to rule out possibilities.

1.)  First, make sure that all drivers, BIOS, etc. are the most recent.  Sony may have an application for checking that drivers and software are up-to-date.  If not, go to the Sony website and search by your notebook model number.

2.) You should test the computer memory.  It is best to test memory outside the Windows operating system, so please follow this post: Windows 7 - RAM - Test with Memtest86+ to either create a bootable CD (Method 2)  or bootable USB flash drive (Method 1) to run the test.  (Note: the computer will have to be set to boot first from either CD or USB.)
  • Once the computer is booted from the CD or USB flash drive, MemTest86+ will start automatically and continue until you stop it by pressing the ESC key.
  • My recommendation would be to run MemTest86+ overnight; 12 hours rather than just 7 passes.
    • There should be NO errors reported.
    • The test can be stopped by pressing the ESC key as soon as an error is reported or after a suitable testing period without errors .
  • If you have errors, please let us know.

3. )  Please perform a Check Disk on all hard drives.

  • Check both boxes:
  • Automatically fix file system errors.
  • Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
  • For any drive that show the message: Windows has made corrections to the file system, please run check disk again.

4. )  Please post the Check Disk log:

  • In the search box type "Event" and click on "Event Viewer" in top column.
  • Click on "Windows Logs" -->"Application."
  • Click the "Source" tab ( top, right) to alphabetize that column.
  • Arrow down to "Wininit." It will be an Event ID: 1001.
  • Select the most recent Check Disk report.
  • Double click on it and select the "Copy" button. This will copy the report to the clipboard.
  • Please paste this report into your next post.

Brooks
