Hello everyone, I hope you guys can help. 3 days ago I noticed that my https connection were getting the yellow triangle that said that there might be a background application that could cause harm.I updated my AV and run it and it found 3 backdoors, but it was only able to remove one of them. I cannot navigate to the folders because they're hidden directories and when i try to delete them through command prompt it doesn't work, even in safe mode. The files are still there but McAfee doesn't detect them anymore but the mbar does but it cannot remove them. I have screen shots of what mcafee did and logs that shows that mcafee was being interrupted. Ill keep it short but if you need any more information i can provide it.

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer!

I am Elle and I will be helping you out with your problem. Firstly, you should know that we are working with specific tools which are used to identify the possible threats present on your system so I will analyze the results they produce.

As a start we need to have some more up-to-date logs than the ones you have already provided. The current state of the files on your system might have changed so we need to get a clear look on that aspect. DO NOT bring any changes to the system except the ones I tell you to as that may produce more damage than helping us.

If you will encounter a delay of over 2 days from me, please don't hesitate and private message me (link in the signature).
Do not forget to check your topic periodically and subscribe to it so that you can receive notifications regarding my replies.

Please generate other DDS logs (download it from here if you haven't already) and post them in your next reply along with other changes that may have occured since you last posted.

Thank you very much for your patience.

Regards,

Elle

Hi there,

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

The first dll was the only one removed. The files reside in the InstallMate directory.

    Hi there,

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

Hello I decided I will delete the directories the trojan resides in. My questions is, my computer came with what the call a one key rescue which is a button that once you hit it will prompt to you to reinstall the original windows image the pc came with, can I do that instead of reformatting since I don't have another copy of windows?

    Hi there,

I am afraid simply deleting the containing folder will not solve the problem, a virus infection is not formed only from files but also other components.

As I have read, it is safe to use the OneKey Rescue though I am not familiar with it. Please let me know whether you decide to reformat or not. :)

Hello, I tried the one key rescue and even though that brought my computer to its original state, I'm not sure if my computer is safe or not because Chrome keeps force closing and Internet explorer blocks my traffic every now and then with an error regarding malicious adware.

I believe at this point the best way to go is to wipe my drives and do a clean install.

My question is could a trojan like this affect the MBR, and is there a way to check that the MBR has not been affected.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi there,

The variant of the backdoor Trojan does not directly affect the pc. It downloads malicious software so there is a possibility that any type of infection might have been added to your system.

If you still want, we can check for it. :)
