hey there,

I'm having issues with my storage drive. I have a SSD drive with all my programs installed on it, and I have a mechanical hard drive that I store my music and junk on.

My storage drive used to only start spinning when I wanted to use files stored on there, but now it's starting up randomly no matter what i'm doing. It spins for about 20 seconds and stops, then starts up again randomly no matter what I'm doing. If I click on a youtube video and the drive decides it needs to start up, it'll pause the browser and freeze the video till it's done booting up.

I don't recall installing any programs on the drive recently, and have no idea why it's endlessly turning on and off while i'm just sitting here typing. Any ideas?

Is this an external drive?

Do you have backup software installed that writes to the drive?

it's an internal drive used only for storage. I don't recall having software that accesses the drive randomly like this

It may be the search index.  If you have the drive indexed, it will access the drive periodically.  You can fix this by unchecking the index feature.  Open your windows explorer and click on computer find your storage drive (D:) and right click.  Scroll down to properties and click.  At the bottom of the first properties window you will see

"Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties"  Uncheck this.  Then, open task manager when it happens again (if it happens again) by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and clicking on Task Manager.  Go to the Performance tab and open the Resource Monitor and you will be able to see what is accessing the disk.

Hope this helps

Your C: drive doesn't have sufficient free space for Windows to work properly.  I suggest that you invest in larger drives...r move data/video/photo files from your C: partition to removeable media.

Until that happens...you are lkely to have various problems with your Windows install.  Your system errors reflect a large (IMO) number of corrupt system files...that could be indicative of a bad hard drive.  Looking at similar issues of file corruption...my guess would be that your hard drive is going. but that's just a guess.  I suggest running the appropriate diagnostic on the drive....after moving any valued files to a reliable storage medium.

I'll move this to Internal Hardware so that someone more knowledgeable can take a look at your SMART data.

OK - after reviewing the posted information and conducting my own research, you have multiple issues going on here.

1.)  Windows REQUIRES that you have a minimum of 10% free space for it to function properly.  I suggest that you use CCleaner from Piriform to cleanout you junk files.  I also has a registry cleaner you may wish to use;

2.)  You have about 20.5GB of combined free space across 3 drives with a total combined storage capacity of about 1.04TB.
This would indicate that you need to either trim some fat or sprint for a new HDD (I would recommend the Western Digital Green Power 2TB Serial ATA/300 32MB Buffer Hard Drive for $99.00 at frys); and,

3.)  The error message
"The content index catalog is corrupt.  (HRESULT :
     0xc0041801) (0xc0041801) Error: (03/02/2013 11:47:52 AM)
(Source: Windows Search Service)(User: ) Description:
     Context: Windows Application, SystemIndex Catalog"

Almost always indicates imminent HDD failure.  I strongly urge you to purchase a new HDD immediately and transfer your data on your c: drive to the new drive.  You may consider using imaging software to create an image of your C: drive that using the on your new HDD.  This will save you hours of installation time.  Then once the image is on the new drive and windows is booting up, run sfc /scannow via admin level command prompt.

Hope this helps.
