I have three computers, all running Windows XP Professional (SP3) on a network with a Dell 1355cn printer.  One computer is connected by USB cable to the printer and can print fine.

The other two are connected to the printer via the network.  The network works fine, e.g. for internet access.

But these two computers have only had intermittent access to the printer.  After installing the printer software, they could print for a while, and then stopped being able to.  Sometimes the solution was to configure the printer port -- the IP address got changed and had to be reset.  Other times that didn't help.

I spent much time on phone and email with Dell.  I've replaced the modem.  They replaced the printer for me.  The same problem persists, though, and now it's out of warranty.

Currently the symptoms are even stranger.  After being unable to print, I changed the IP addresses on the two PCs back to the correct one for the printer.  On PC # 1, I am able to print a test page and print from Adobe Acrobat, but Word crashes when I try to print.  Also, I can see the printer in a browser at 192.168.1.5.  On PC # 2, I can see the printer in a browser, but cannot print a test page or print from any application.  Even though BOTH computers have identical port settings now.

Does anyone have any ideas of what else to try?

Thanks,

Roger

Roger,

You can try to Share that printer by USB on Computer A

Computer B and C will print to Computer A  by using the USB

To share the printer by USB go to Printers>>Right Click on dell 1355cn and select Printer Properties  Go to Sharing tab >>click Share this printer and click appy.

You need access to the Computers via windows work group http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457001.aspx

See if that works for you.

Thanks, this sharing method works, at least so far.  (I won't celebrate, b/c many other fixes of this problem only worked for a while.)

I'm also using this method to get Computers A and B to print on Computer C's printer, which is also handy.

It seems like there are at least two ways to do the sharing of a computer printer -- via the sharing a printer wizard, and via the add a printer wizard.

Roger
