When I open the internet my homepage is www.securitysafeguards.net- telling me there is spyware detected. When I try and change my homepage- it always goes back to this site as well as if I enter the address for the site I wanted as my homepage- it nows comes up as securitysafeguard.( ie change homepage to www.msn.com- it still comes up as securitysafeguard and if I go to file- open and enter www.msn.com- it goes to securitysafeguard also. I have Norton supposedly protecting me and ran all the recommended scans on your site ( each time coming up with alarming #s) but none resolving this issue. I am at out of ideas and since I am barely computer literate  .... My little brother told me about this site. Any assistance is appreciated.

Hi mikki!

*It is a good idea to print off these instructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
It is important that you complete the following instructions in the correct order, and also that you don't miss anything out!

* First we must disable the monitoring by MSAS or it can interfere with registry changes that HijackThis makes.
1. Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray [It's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye.].
2. Click on "Security Agents Status".
3. Click on "Disable real-time protection".

* Next right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray again to open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

1. Click on the Options menu and choose Settings.
2. In the left pane column click on "Real Time Protection".
3. Under Startup Options, uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents on startup (recommended)"
4. Under Real-time spyware threat protection, uncheck and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection" (recommended).
5. Click the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.

* Do you use Poker applications at all? If you do that is fine, but they are known to come bundled with malware, so in my opinion you should remove them. If you do wish to remove them click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs. From within add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist by double-clicking on the following entries:

PokerrewardsMPP
PartyPoker

Also, please remove this entry:

MyWebSearch

* Download smitRem and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.

* Please download ewido security suite; it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido by double-clicking on the icon on your desktop.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates
Don't run it yet.

* Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Do not run it yet.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present (please leave the three poker entries if you still want them):

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch <--folder

* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

* Now open Ewido Security Suite
Click on scanner

* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

* Close Ewido

* Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab > uncheck and delete everything you find in there. (except for "My current home page")

* Reboot back into Windows.

* Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt which is present on your Homedrive (C:\ in most cases)
and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Hello there,

*It is a good idea to print off these instructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
It is important that you complete the following instructions in the correct order, and also that you don't miss anything out!

° Download AboutBuster.
Unzip AboutBuster.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
Don't run it yet.

*Boot into Safe Mode (without networking support!)
By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

*Now start a new scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items (if present):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\rnxrx.dll/sp.html#45052%resultposition.net
O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {C4069E3A-68F1-403E-B40E-20066696354B} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)
O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
O9 - Extra button: Poker Rewards Poker - {6DAF93EB-C7E3-41ab-83D9-CAE1785F41BC} - C:\Program Files\pokerrewardsMPP\MPPoker.exe
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocache/funwe...tup1.0.0.15.cab

* Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed and click on "Fix Checked" and exit HijackThis when finished.

*Go to start > run and type: regsvr32 /u occache.dll
(or copy and paste this in the field in start > run )
Click Ok

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\rnxrx.dll
C:\Program Files\iWon
C:\Program Files\Uninstall My Web Search.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\f3initialsetup1.0.0.15.inf
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\f3initialsetup1.0.0.8-2.inf
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\initial.inf

* Go to start > run and type regsvr32 occache.dll

* Start Aboutbuster and let it scan.
The log will be saved in the aboutbuster-folder
If you get any error using aboutbuster, it's important you let me know afterwards in your next reply.
So skip this step in case of error and proceed with the next step of this fix.

Please boot back into normal mode and post a new HijackThis log.
David

Hi there,

Everything is looking much better, just one more entry to fix:

*Now start a new scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items (if present):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://home.iwon.com/index_gen.html

* Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed and click on "Fix Checked" and exit HijackThis when finished.

How does the system feel to you? Do you feel the original problems are solved?

David

That entry was not there. My homepage has not been hijacked since the last round of scans so I think we get this thing whooped. I am heading to the donate button now.... Thanks for the help

Great news mikki!

The fact that your system got so infected in the first place shows me that you are lacking slightly in protection. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Now that you are clean, lets reset your system restore points please follow these simple steps in order
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Clickthe System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer
  • Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs: hide
Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
I would recommend Grisofts© AVG or AVAST©. As these are the more secure and better ones.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
I would recommend ZoneAlarm© as a firewall as it's easy to use. But for a more secure firewall, Sunbelts Kerio© is the one.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly
  • Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Lavasofts© Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here: Click here for more info -->Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If you have any addition questions just ask...
David
