Hello,

I've been getting a lot of computer crashing while playing Skyrim. It's a custom build with the following specs:

i7 930

OCZ Gold RAM (6 GB)

HD 6950

128 GB Crucial M4 containing my Windows 7 installation (and a symbolic link library that includes my Skyrim game directory)

1 TB 7200 RPM Samsung Spinpoint

2x 2 TB Samsung 5400 RPM drives in RAID (used only for video storage)

Seasonic x750 PSU

Asus Rampage iii Gene Motherboard

The crashing is very intermittent but persistent; sometimes I can play for hours without a BSOD whereas other times it'll happen multiple times per day. Here's the WinDbg log of my latest crash dump:

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (7a)
The requested page of kernel data could not be read in. Typically caused by
a bad block in the paging file or disk controller error. Also see
KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR.
If the error status is 0xC000000E, 0xC000009C, 0xC000009D or 0xC0000185,
it means the disk subsystem has experienced a failure.
If the error status is 0xC000009A, then it means the request failed because
a filesystem failed to make forward progress.
Arguments:
Arg1: fffff6fc40071538, lock type that was held (value 1,2,3, or PTE address)
Arg2: ffffffffc0000056, error status (normally i/o status code)
Arg3: 00000000b8377be0, current process (virtual address for lock type 3, or PTE)
Arg4: fffff8800e2a7000, virtual address that could not be in-paged (or PTE contents if arg1 is a PTE address)

I looked through Google for BSODs related to ntkrnlmp.exe and found that many people blamed it on bad RAM. I ran through four cycles of MemTest86 and it didn't report a single error. Could anyone suggest where to troubleshoot next?

Hello Danja,

The first thing I would suggest is to check to see if your 128 GB Crucial M4 SSD drive needs a firmware update.  There is a 12/04/2012 firmware update available for the M4 drives.  Older firmware had problems with BSODs.  Note that there are two different M4 drives.

  • Correctly identify your drive.
  • Make sure the drive needs the update.
  • Heed the warning

Regards,
Brooks

Darn. I performed the firmware update and it seemed that my gaming experience was smoother. At the end of my ~1 hr session I had a freeze (not BSOD) which I assume was texture overload. I exited via CTRL+ALT+Delete, and then went to do some homework. This was about 6 hours ago; I just got home, turned on the PC, and found a blank desktop with a "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" message. I checked and there was indeed a second minidump for the day:

Hello,

If we could gather a little more information about the problem computer, it might prove helpful in pointing toward a solution.

1. )  Please follow this link:  BSOD Posting Instructions Windows 8 - Windows 7 - Vista.

  • Follow all instructions with the exception of:
    • Create a new thread HERE and attach the file(s) after step 4
  • Note: Both files of Step 1 need to be in the Documents folder.

Next, Upload the zipped folder to a File Sharing website of your choosing because Bleeping Computer has a 512 K only upload limit and this file will be much larger.

2. )  To help us get a better look at your computer's hardware, please download and install Speccy by Piriform. (mirror site)

  • Run Speccy and from the top menu, select File --> Publish Snapshot.  Click "Yes" to proceed.
  • Click, Copy to Clipboard and  paste this address into your next post.

3. )  Please download MiniToolBox by farbar, save it to your Desktop, then run it.

  • Check the following checkbox:

Please download malwarebytes and run a full scan to make sure that you're not infected.

Sorry for the delay; got very busy with work. No time for Skyrim or troubleshooting :).

Here is the requested zip file: http://www.mediafire.com/?0x68xraewkj6832

Here are the Speccy results: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/iiiu3PhtLCgnTpFXNXpemuG

And here are the installed programs. I'll run driver verifier, HDD verifier, and RAM verifier after I post. Malware bytes is currently running and hasn't found anything yet. I ran it about 3 weeks ago and had no hits; since then I haven't opened any emails or gone to any sites aside from the Bethsoft Forums, Skyrim nexus, OCN, and here on this computer so I doubt it's a virus.

Hello Danja,

Processor may be overclocked!
 Expected Frequency:  2800
 Actual Frequency:     3578
 Overclock Ratio:      1.27

Because your system is unstable, please return all settings to stock, for the time being.

The vast majority of your Bug Checks were:

STOP 0x0000007A: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
Usual causesMemory, Paging file corruption, File system, Hard drive, Cabling, Virus infection, Improperly seated cards, BIOS, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (7a)
"The requested page of kernel data could not be read in.  Typically caused by a bad block in the paging file or disk controller error."

**Please make sure that all cables are snug; both on the hard drives and the motherboard.

**Did you update the SSD firmware with the correct version?

**Run Windows Check Disk on both drives to check the file system:
  • Double click on the "(My) Computer" icon on your desktop or in your Start Menu.
  • Right click on the drive to test and click "Properties."
  • Select "Tools" tab and under "Error checking" click "Check now."
  • Make sure that only of the following box is checked.
    • Automatically fix file system errors
  • Click "Start."
  • Click "Schedule disk check" then reboot your computer.
  • The computer will load into normal Windows when the Check Disk has completed.

**Remove and Rebuild the Page File:

  • Click Start and type: sysdm.cpl in the search box.  Click on sysdm.cpl at top of column.
  • Click the Advanced tab | click Performance Settings button | click Avanced tab | click Virtual memory Change button.
  • Click No paging file | click Set button |  Yes to messagebox | OK | OK | Apply |Restart the computer.

Follow Steps #1 and 2 above | check Automatically manage page file size for all drives | click Set button | OK | OK | OK | Manually restart the computer.  The page file will be rebuilt.

**Verify that this is your exact motherboard and version.

  • There appears to be a newer BIOS that states, "improved memory compatibilty" and "Improved system stability."
  • Warning: Updating the BIOS should not be taken lightly. If performed improperly, it can leave your computer inoperable. Consult your motherboard manual for the proper procedure and safeguards.

  Driver Detective (Version: 8.1)

I don't recommend third party driver download software nor do I recommend Microsoft Updates for third party drivers.  They may deliver drivers that are similar but aren't tested for compatibility with your particular hardware. That can lead to system instability and  BSODs.   This is particularly important with notebook computers where drivers need to work very closely with the installed hardware for energy saving modes.

The only place to obtain reliable, stable drivers for your hardware is from the computer manufacturer's or hardware manufacturer's website.

  • If your computer is an OEM product (Sony, Dell, HP, etc.), the best drivers for your specific model would be found on their website.
  • If your system is home built, then the best drivers will be found on the motherboard site (Gigabyte, Asus, etc) and the manufacturer's website of any add-on components (graphics - nVidia, ATI, etc).

Regards,
Brooks
