I recently received a notification from norton 360 while downloading an MSDOS game from download.net, saying that the "yontoo" virus was detected and quarantined. As soon as I saw the notification I immediately ran live update and began to run a full system scan. The scan only went through 3100 or so files then froze. I tried to restart the scan but I encountered the same problem. I then restarted my pc in safe mode and began the scan again but it once again got stuck before completion, this time only after about 900 files scanned. I decided to restart the pc in normal mode and try to find a solution on the Internet, but now the majority of the icons on my desktop will not work. When I double click them the icon fades and nothing happens. When I right click Internet explorer instead of the first option in the list being "open" it shows "browse the Internet" and the second option is "browse the Internet without addons". When I click "browse the Internet" the browser opens then quickly closes before anything loads. When I click "browse the Internet without addons" nothing happens at all. I am locked out of everything from "my computer" to "notepad". I'm not sure if this is from the "yontoo" virus or if its from something else, but as I said it started just after quarantining "yontoo". I run Windows XP Media Center with service pack 3. Unfortunately without access to the Internet I couldn't download the DDS program suggested by BC to help diagnos my issue. I hope this is enough information to go on.

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. I am The Dark Knight and will be assisting you. Please ask questions if anything is unclear. welcome.gif

Please follow these instructions to run ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links and instructions for running this tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix (CF).

Please go here to see a list of programs that need to be disabled.

**Note: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.**

**Note 2: If you get a message saying "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", please restart your computer.**

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

=====

Also, please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Search.
  • A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt as well.

=====

Please post the contents of both logs in your reply.
