Hi there- so for a week or two, my laptop has been giving me these
popup errors when I try to open certain programs and/or when first
booting up.  There's something about .Net-Broadcast.Window in a lot of
the start up ones.  Down below this line is the one I'm currently
looking at: (jucheck.exe- Bad Image):

c:\windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls+6595b64144ccf1df_5.82.7600.16661_none_ebfb56996c72aefc\comctl32.dll

...that line seems to be common to most of these errors, but I don't
know anything about the implications of such a message.  I can click
'OK' a bunch of times and it goes away.  But, certain programs will open
and certain ones don't.

This started a week or two ago, not sure how exactly.  I feel like I
got an error message about a corrupted iPod, but I reinstalled iTunes
without incident.  But since then I've been getting these errors
frequently.  I tried doing some SFC scan thing with a command prompt,
but didn't understand how to replace corrupted files that the system
couldn't fix itself.

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.

  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

====================================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE
  • Unzip downloaded file.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • DO NOT click on the Cleanup button. Simply exit the program.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

....that's all I can do for now.  I tried doing the MBAR program, but it gave me the same 'bad image' error with that COMCTL.32.dll at the end of it.  I used a program called PeaZip to unzip it, not sure if I did it wrong or something.  Some free program I'm trying O_o

Uninstall McAfee Security Scan Plus, typical foistware.

I don't see any AV program running.

Install ONE of these:

- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

- free Microsoft Security Essentials: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials
Note for Windows 8 users: Microsoft Security Essentials comes preinstalled and renamed as Windows Defender.
You can keep it or you have to disable it before installing another AV program.  How to...

- free Comodo Antivirus: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/antivirus.php

Update, run full scan, report on any findings.

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.

  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your desktop.
  • Open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

Oh my god...this is getting annoying, it finishes the scan BUT I get the same old error when attempting to save the log.  There are two results in a nasty red font, both have to do with Java deployment cache.  Is that a clue?  I can try doing a safe mode scan and seeing what happens I guess.  I thought I saw something about Java in another log here...?

Nothing...certain programs get the bad image thing, some don't.  Seems at random which ones are affected, safe mode or otherwise.  Not sure what to do.   I did some digging, I found an old post you had worked with:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/370573/comctl32dll-missing-on-windows-7-ultimate/

...I found that by Googling "COMCTL32.dll 16661", because that 16661 is in the error message consistently.  I tracked down that folder in my Windows system folders, and it happens to be empty.  Other COMCTL32 folders have +/- 500KB of data but that one is empty.  I don't know anything about anything, but I vaguely remember hearing something about this happening to other people after Windows updates.  Is this a simple fix by downloading that specific file somehow?  I've heard you shouldn't do that...

Also, a friend recommended I try going to MSCONFIG and restarting with the original boot conformation or something like that.  I did, and I didn't get the error message at startup (progress?), but it did start appearing when I would go and open certain programs.

I hope you can make sense of this smashcomp.gif

The file is in place but it may corrupted.

Let's try to replace it with another copy.

Download fix.bat file from here: http://www.bleepstatic.com/fhost/uploads/1/fix.bat to your Desktop.

Restart computer in safe mode.

Double click on fix.bat to run the fix.

Command prompt window will open.
You should see following message:
"1 file(s) copied"
In that case press any key to close command prompt window.
If you see any error message let me know.

Restart computer in normal mode and try to run MBAR again.

See if you'll get same error.
