I have a Gateway FX6850-51u desktop that has USB 2.0 already installed, however, I would like to upgrade to USB 3.0 in order to use a USB 3.0 portable hard drive for backup, along with other 3.0 devices.

According to my PC specs I have one 2.0 free x PCI Express x16, four 0.0 free x PCI Express x 1, 2.0 total 0.0 free.

Looking at the back of my PC there are two unused expansion slots.

Looking on Newegg there are several highly rated models with 2 or 4 external ports.

Here's two models that might be adequate for my purpose, though, please feel free to recommend another model that you feel would be better.

1- US Robotics 3.0 2 port PCI model USR8404. There's a straight forward setup video on YouTube for this card.

2- Koutech 3.0 4 port PCI model PEU430.

There are several others, however, these two have fairly good reviews.

While far from a Luddite I'm not exactly a computer expert, though the installation seems straight forward. I'm presently deep into old-fartdom and rapidly approaching senility or multi infarct dementia, whichever comes first. So talk to me like I'm five years old, which I might very well be by the time someone answers this, and my powers of concentration and motor function have taken a decided turn for the worse.

I would like to thank everyone who answers in advance for your time on my behalf.

I hope that I provided enough information for someone to provide an answer that will work with minimal to no problems.

Thank you.

HI, Before ordering I suggest opening the case and making sure you have a free PCI Express slot. I used the Western Digital USB3 card in two desktops with no glitches under Windows 7 64Bit. I also tried a different brand that had what were most likely driver problems. The computer kept Bluescreening. That's what I get for going cheap.

The Western Digital is Detected as a NEC USB3 device BTW.

After using USB3 for external Storage, I've stopped buying any USB2 storage devices, The speed is so much better!

I see You read the User reviews. Good Move thumbup.gif

Good Luck
