I found out I have a lot of computer problems today. The short story on this issue is that my hard drive keeps jumping in terms of how much space I have left. I've deleted over 900mbs of stuff today and it's still telling me I have no disk space left. What's wrong? The only program I have open is Google Chrome.

I have to ask the question, did you empty the Recycle Bin?  Have you tried Shift+Del to skip the Recycle Bin?  Can you explain further how the free space keeps changing?  Eg every 5 minutes?

Yes, I've emptied the Recycle Bin every time and doublechecked. I was just sitting here working on my 1 page Word document and now I have no space available. I went from 300mbs to none. So yes, it does change pretty much every 5 minutes.

I can't post using Speecy because I don't have enough space, even though I've been clearing up 100mbs since this morning! It's not my machine and I don't have the authority to delete other documents to free up space.

Who...is the administrator of this system, please?

Who is the owner?

Louis

To free space on the Windows partition...I suggest that you move all video files from My Documents/My Videos...to the second drive reflected as having tons of space.

I have access to administrative options too, but the laptop is my friend's who doesn't want her documents moved, so I've deleted pretty much half of my documents. When I started using the laptop, there was about 2GBs of space free, so it's supposed to have about 1GB free now, but it says I have 716kbs free...

The second drive is a recovery disk, I believe. I can't move things there.

A side comment about the defragmenting.  The utility that comes with Windows has always been pathetic.  I don't know if the ones in the latest versions of Windows still need 15% free space .  Almost any 3rd party defragger is better.  In your case, if the free space is being constantly gobbled by something, defragging may not help.  Although it's payware, PerfectDisk will defrag with only 1% free space.

Adding to Hamluis last comment, these days with USB thumb drives being dirt cheap (especially 8GB), it's a lot easier dumping files if you don't have a hard drive handy.

Thanks for the tip about the defrag, Nanobyte!

I ran the disk cleaner through Glary Utilities. It says I have over 1.5GBs available for delete. Files include: C:\Windows\Installer\MSIFBDF.tmp (149,029 KB). Are these safe to delete? What if Recycle Bin just didn't delete my files well enough so they stayed on the hard drive?

Generally, .tmp files can be deleted.  You have to be cautious about allowing utitilies to delete stuff.  If you are familiar with the software and what it does, you can be more trusting.  Many people only run utilities when they are in trouble.  Not the best time.

Re the Recycle Bin, if you move files off to the other HDD, you should be able to tell if Explorer is doing its job because that amount of GB should now be free, on top of what already was.  You originally mentioned 900MB, not a lot these days.  Given your situation I would be moving GBs.

One of the problems of using Windows' basic setup is that My Documents etc are on the C: drive.  If you have a fairly small drive, you are compromising the OS by having low free space.  There are various ways to get round the issue.  Getting your data files on to the other drive frees up space and makes it easier to deal with serious OS crashes - easier to re-install the OS without losing data.

Edit:  I seem to remember running out of disk space years ago and found that I could only move small files to begin with.  Once I got more free space, I could move larger and larger files.

I keep a copy of freeware Auslogics Defrag Portable on a USB thumbdrive.  That would be a possibility if Windows defragger refused to do its job.  No installation required.  It can consolidate free space too (not that you have any!).

Well...documents take up very little hard drive space...while video files take up large amounts of hard drive space, relatively speaking.

Generally...Windows is likely to malperform if the free space falls to less than 10-15% of the total partition/drive space.

That won't be solved by eliminating documents and it wasn't necessary to delete anything, since there is a drive with much space available, per the report you posted..

1 Drive c: (OS) (Fixed) (Total:116.44 GB) (Free:0 GB) NTFS

2 Drive d: (DATA) (Fixed) (Total:329.79 GB) (Free:321.96 GB)
NTFS

I don't have any videos on this laptop. It's mostly photos.

My friend and I went through some of her files and took your comment, hamluis, that Windows is likely to malperform under 10-15% of free space, so we deleted a bunch of things. Thanks for your explanations too, Nanobyte!

I'll consider this issue resolved for now.
