I have experienced a significant slow-down in my various browsers' ability to load pages over the past few months.

I use IE9 and Firefox18.  Most of the slow-down seems to be with loading ads and other content external to the particular website I am visiting (YouTube embedded video player, etc.).

On some websites, once they load, I experience freezing when scrolling with my mouse wheel -- text that blurs across the screen, etc.  This even happens on the bleepingcomputer.com site.

I'm running a 3 year-old HP desktop, wireless cable Internet connection, and have not had this issue to this extent until recently.  I installed BOINC 6 weeks ago, but the slow browser problem pre-dates that software by at least a month or more.

I've run MBAM scans - nothing found.  Online speed tests - throughput is fine.

Any suggestions on how to proceed in addressing this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Did you try to reset IE?

Did you try to reinstall Firefox?

Yes, I have tried resetting IE, and have upgraded Firefox from 14 to 18, with no noticeable improvement.

Honestly, I am beginning to think that much of the issue is all the pointless external calls that web pages make -- to Google AdSense, YouTube, other various ad servers, "Tweet this", "Like This," Instagram, Pinterest, AddThis, etc., etc., etc. without end.

But since my slow-down seems to be a recent development (while website clutter is not), I thought I would check to see if there were any known issues that could be addressed to help solve the problem.  I'm open to any other suggestions, thanks.

Let's try one more time...

Reset Internet Explorer.
Go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 and run "FixIt" procedure.
Make sure you follow ALL steps listed there.

Uninstall Firefox completely using this guide: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox

Install fresh copy.

Thanks - tried both of those again. No noticeable improvement.  It still seems like most of the slowness results from ancillary items that take extra-long to load.

I tried installing an ad-blocker on IE9 (Simple Adblock) but it wouldn't even work -- looked to me like the filter file had no entries in it, only comment lines.  I have had Adblock Plus installed in Firefox for quite some time and am happy with it, but even with that, the slowness for pages to complete loading exists.

Download Security Check from here or here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NOTE 1. If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.
NOTE 2 SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE
  • Unzip downloaded file.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • DO NOT click on the Cleanup button. Simply exit the program.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

NOTE. Make sure all logs are pasted not attached.

I have had a problems running TempFileCleaner on this machine.  It appears to be a permissions issue related to Windows 7.  I run it as Admin, and it is able to clean up that account, as well as some of the others (Default, All Users, etc.), but when it tries to clean up the Temp Internet Files for one of the "real" user accounts, it hangs.  I let it go for 8 hours and it did not finish.  If I try running it from one of the user accounts (Run As Administrator), the opposite happens -- it hangs when trying to clean the Admin account. I am surprised that when logged on as Admin, it can't clean the other user account, because I had obtained access to that user's folders previously for the Admin account.  In any event....

Ever since attempting TFC, this computer has become very unstable -- often it will not boot up or shut down successfully.  The boot up process is painfully slow, when it does work.  Windows Live Mail won't work.  Occasionally, users are directed to a "temporary" desktop when logging in.  I even tried a restore to a point over 1 week ago, and that hung up during initialization and would not complete.

I am not "blaming" TFC for this, just noting that it happened around the same time.

I'm not sure if the hard drive is slowly dying, or if Windows has become corrupted, or if something else is the issue.  But, at the moment, this PC has become essentially unusable.
