Hey all I'm a newbie and am quite overwhelmed by the extensive list of topics, for that reason I have no Idea where i should post this question. So feel free to point me in the right direction, move my thread, or give me advice as to how to ask a question more properly.

Neways to get to my problem, as said in the title
I was on my notebook which is running XP home edition, and I installed AVG, and ran a scan. The scan alerted me that my computer had two viruses. one was a trojan horse, and the other was called a IRP hook, which said something about windows 32 driver or something. Avg suggested that I remove it. So being confident in AVG (because of its great reviews), I clicked remove. Then i got a prompt to restart the computer, and Bam!!! Infinite Boot loop.(cant even get to an error message screen because it flash on and off too quickly). Ive tried booting in safe mode, safe mode w networking, and with command prompt. No dice. I also tried last know configuration. also nothing. Is there anything you lovely folks and bleeping computer can do? seriously though this is pissing me off. Lot of good files on there.

AVG ****ed me in places I wouldn't let my girlfriend touch me.

Edit: Moved topic from Aii to the more appropriate forum. ~ bloopie

Lets take a look at the BlueScreen error message.

  • When you boot your machine, press F8 to list the startup options, exactly as you would if you were trying to enter Safe Mode
  • Select "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure", as shown here:

  • When your system BSODs, write down the STOP error code, as well as any written out error message back here. The STOP error will always appear, but the message may not. You are looking for this:

Please post me the Stop error message.

the virus should modify boot sector... try with a Windows Live CD or directly reinstall windows...

If a virus has infected your Windows XP-based computer and a virus-detection program cannot remove the virus and repair the system, you must repartition and format your hard disk and reinstall Windows XP.

For additional information about partitioning and formatting a hard disk with Windows XP, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 313348

Try this please.  You will need a USB drive.

Download http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-xpud-windows-latest.exe & http://noahdfear.net/downloads/bootable/xPUD/xpud-0.9.2.iso to the desktop of your clean computer

  • Insert your USB drive
  • Press Start > My Computer > right click your USB drive > choose Format > Quick format
  • Double click the unetbootin-xpud-windows-387.exe that you just downloaded
  • Press Run then OK
  • Select the DiskImage option then click the browse button located on the right side of the textbox field.
  • Browse to and select the xpud-0.9.2.iso file you downloaded
  • Verify the correct drive letter is selected for your USB device then click OK
  • It will install a little bootable OS on your USB device
  • Once the files have been written to the device you will be prompted to reboot ~ do not reboot and instead just Exit the UNetbootin interface
  • After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  • Next download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/driver.sh to your USB
  • Also Download Query.exe to the USB drive. In your working computer, navigate to the USB drive and click on the Query.exe. A folder and a file, query.sh, will be extracted.
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer
  • The computer must be set to boot from the USB drive
  • In some computers you need to  tap F12 and choose to boot from the USB, in others is the Esc key. Please consult your computer's documentation.
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Then type bash driver.sh -af
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    Winlogon.exe

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    volsnap.sys

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    explorer.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    Userinit.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After the search is completed type Exit and press Enter.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt
  • While still in the Open Terminal, type bash query.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as RegReport.txt
  • Then type dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.txt bs=512 count=1

Leave a space among the following Statements:

dd is the executable application used to create the backup
if=/dev/sda is the device the backup is created from - the hard drive when only one HDD exists
of=mbr.txt is the backup file to create - note the lack of a path - it will be created in the directory currently open in the Terminal
bs=512 is the number of bytes in the backup
count=1 says to backup just 1 sector

It is extremely important that the if and of statements are correctly entered.

  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as mbr.bin
  • Plug the USB back into the clean computer. Post the contents of the report.txt, filefind.txt and RegReport.txt in your next reply. The mbr.txt file must be attached to your reply as it is a Hex file..

I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but I minimized the terminal after the first report was conclude(bash driver.sh), and the terminal screen "disappeared".Not being able to find it,  I then opened a new terminal and resumed the instructions. I realize that this may have messed up the process. If it did,I am sorry for wasting your time, and will gladly restart the process.

here are the logs from  report.txt

Logs look clear.

Enter the BIOS setup utility. Browse around for the hard drive ATA's Mode, remember the current settings, (there may be three options, AHCI, Compatible OR IDE-mode)then change it to Compatibiity Mode and attempt to boot the computer.

If that fails, lets see if there are restore points:

Download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/rst.sh to the USB drive

  • Boot the Sick computer to xPUD again
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • Expand your USB (sdb1)
  • Confirm that you see rst.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash rst.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive (sdb1) named enum.log
  • Plug that USB back into the clean computer and open it

Copy and paste the enum.log for my review

Thank you so much for bearing with me through all of this, I'm on my way out so I wont be able to reply right away,  I'm looking at what I believe to be my Bios Menu, (Phoenix Softcore tm Setup or "System utilities" access by pressing F2 and I do not have/see an option to change the ATA mode. I think either I'm in the wrong place or that my Bios lacks Compatibility Mode option. Ill try to attach a Video of it

I looked in bios and played with it a little bit, it appears it doesnt have an option  to change the ATA mode (or I dont see  it)

If it would help I can attach a Video, or snapshots that display all the options I know how to access from Bios.
