I have windows 8 installed on my home computer. The computer keeps shutting down on it's own and saying "Driver Power State Failure". Can someone look at my BSOD Minidumpfiles and give me an idea of what could be causing this problem. I have tried to save the minidump files into a zip file, but it brings up an error not allowing me to do this. Hopefully the text file from Blue Screen view is enough to figure this out. Thanks.

Hello cap2587,

I'm afraid that BlueScreenView is not very helpful.

If we could gather a little more information about the problem computer, it might prove beneficial in pointing toward a solution.

1. )  Please follow this link:  BSOD Posting Instructions Windows 8 - Windows 7 - Vista.

  • Follow all instructions with the exception of:
    • Create a new thread HERE and attach the file(s) after step 4
  • Note: Both files of Step 1 need to be in the Documents folder.

Next, Upload the zipped folder to a File Sharing website of your choosing because Bleeping Computer has a 512 K only upload limit and this file will be much larger.

2. )  To help us get a better look at your computer's hardware, please download and install Speccy by Piriform. (mirror site)

  • Run Speccy and from the top menu, select File --> Publish Snapshot.  Click "Yes" to proceed.
  • Click, Copy to Clipboard and  paste this address into your next post.

Below is ONLY for those who can not get online when running Speccy:

  • Select File --> Save as Text File and save the file to your Desktop.
  • Please copy the text file into your next post.
  • Important Note: You will need to edit the text file to make sure that your Windows Key is not present under Operating System.

3. )  Please download MiniToolBox by farbar, save it to your Desktop, then run it.

  • Check the following checkbox:
    • List Installed Programs
  • Then click Go.
    • Copy the result (Result.txt) by clicking Edit from top menu -> Select all, then Edit -> Copy.
    • Please Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post.

Regards,
Brooks

cap2587,

Thank you for the Speccy Snapshot and the MiniToolBox posts. smile.png

I am still missing the zipped JCGriff2 collection app folder (step #1).  You will have to upload that to a file sharing site as it is too large to attach to the forum post.

Brooks

Let me try again with the Zip file and see if it works.  If not I will try another file sharing program.  Thanks.

Hello,

Got it that time. thumbup2.gif

While I analyze the minidump files, the Performance Monitor has flagged your hard drive as "dirty."

1.)  Please run a Check Disk for your hard drive:

  • At the Start Screen, press (WinKey + E).
  • Right click on your system hard drive and select Properties.
  • Click on the Tools tab and under Error checking, click Check.
  • Click on Scan Drive to continue or (cancel to exit the scan).
  • If no errors are found, click Close.
  • If errors are found, click Repair Drive.

2.)  If chkdsk errors were found, please go to Windows Event Viewer and post the chkdsk report by doing the following:

  • At the Start Screen, press (WinKey + X) and select Event Viewer.
    • Click on the triangle to the left of Windows Logs to expand the category.
    • Click on Application, then click on the Source column in the right pane. This will alphabetize the column.
    • Find the most recent chkdsk entry, double click on it to open, then click the Copy button.
    • The chkdsk report will be saved to the Clipboard.
  • Paste (CTRL + V) this report into your next post.

3.)  On the Gigabyte Website for your motherboard, there appears to be a BIOS update.

  • Your current BIOS Version is:  FI Date: 3/11/2010.
  • The newest version states: Improved system compatibilty.
  • Updating BIOS can't be taken lightly.  If performed incorrectly it can leave your computer inoperable. Please read your motherboard manual for the proper method for updating the BIOS.

Regards,
Brooks

I did forget to give you some important information.  One of my Internal hard drives does not show up on some reboots.  I will go ahead and try the above steps and let you know.  What about if I do not see this hard drive show up under My Computer?  I am also noticing that when I do not see this additional drive show up that I am not getting the minidump/BSOD.    Thanks

Do run the check disk on your system drive.

I am also noticing that when I do not see this additional drive show up that I am not getting the minidump/BSOD.

That certainly points a finger at the second hard drive (Seagate). It could be a hard drive problem, loose sata data or power cable on the drive, BIOS issue, or possibly a failing sata port on the motherboard.

If the computer isn't under warranty and you feel comfortable working inside the tower, power off  and unplug the computer.  Ground yourself to discharge any static electricity by touching a metal part of the chassis before handling the drive cables.
  • Remove and re-attach the power and data cable for your second hard drive (Seagate).  The connections should feel snug.   If they feel loose, then replace the cable.
  • Do the same for the data cable connection onto the motherboard.
  • If the motherboard has a spare sata port, try moving the second drive to that spare port.

If the BSODs continue, then test the hard drives:

To test the hard drives, I suggest that you run SeaTools for DOS.  On a functioning computer you will create a bootable diagnostic CD, per instuctions below.

  • Accept the agreement, download the SeaToolsDOS223ALL.iso file, then burn it to create a bootable CD.
  • If you don't know how to create a bootable CD from an "iso" file,  I recommend using ImgBurn:
  • Download ImgBurn from here.
  • Install the software then start ImgBurn.
  • Select "Write Image file to disk."
  • Under "Source" click on the "folder icon" to the right and select the "iso" file location.
  • Click on this icon    to start the burning process.

  • Set your computer to boot from the CD\DVDROM drive first or press the appropriate F key to bring up the Boot Menu and then select CD\DVDROM drive.

Boot the computer from the SeaTools CD and accept the license agreement.  Your hard drive(s) should be listed.

  • Note: SeaTools does not recognise all SATA controllers so there is a chance that your hard drive won't be listed.  If that's the case, then please let us know.  Your drive may not be listed due to the current problem, so if not, try several times.

At the Seagate interface, highlight the drive to test (Seagate - ST3500418AS ATA Device)
Select "Basic Tests" from the top menu, then run the Long Test.
If bad blocks are found during a Long test, a prompt will ask how to proceed.

  • Because there is a chance of data loss with the repair, select Skip This One and All Remaining, unless you have backed up all important data on the drive.

After testing the Seagate drive, run a Long Test on the Western Digital drive as well.
If any hard drive does not "Pass" the Long Test, then it is failing and shouldn't be trusted.

Regards,
Brooks

I think a corrupt hard drive is the issue. However, it is not the Seagate that is the problem.  I have a 3rd drive attached and when I can view this in my Computer then I am running into BSOD problems.  Let me go ahead and take this drive out and see if I still experience any problems.  Thanks for the great response to my post.  Will keep u posted.
