Not Responding errors across various programs

I'm getting constant not responding errors in almost all programs, everything from Firefox to Photoshop and Lightroom to simply accessing various folders on my drives (both internal and external).
The majority of the time the program hangs for up to 30 seconds and says Not Responsing and then works again. In Photoshop and Lightroom however, I have to restart the programs, they never start responding again. AVG and malwarebytes haven't picked up anything.

 

My computer knowledge is limited, so I'm not sure exactly what info I need to post. Here's my computer specs:

My first question must be why have you not upgraded to Win7 SP1 ?? Speccy still shows no upgrade -
You do need it, plus there is a big Windows Update due, and without SP1 you can't take all Updates.

Hi -

Seems to only be minor items listed above, so we will check your internal system and installed files -

 

Run a sfc / scannow check against your existing installed Windows files -

Click Start > Accessories > Find Command Prompt and Right click on it > Select Run as Administrator > Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.

Note the space between c and / as this is important. This scan should only take 10 to 15 minutes (on average).

Please report any errors listed.

 

Next -

Run a Disk Check on your C: drive in Windows : No discs are required for this, like with XP systems -
•Click Start and open Computer
•Right-click on C: (or your main Hard Drive letter) and select Properties
•Click on the Tools tab
•Under Error-checking click the Check Now... button
•Mark the 2 boxes next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
•Click on the Start button
•When the message box pops up, click the Schedule disk check button and >>Restart<< your computer
•Once your computer restarts it will check the drive, don't press any keys so that it is allowed to do so


This will take between 1 and 2 hours (on average) depending on installed programs, then it will reboot back to Normal mode

Please allow all 5 stages to complete, prior to restarting again -

If any error occurs, please allow at least 3 hours prior to a manual reboot.

Ok, I ran the sfc/ scannow and no errors were found.

 

Ran a disk check on my c: drive,  and no errors occurred.

How long have you been using AVG and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware together ??

Would this relate to the time frame of your problem (just a sideline idea) ?

 

Please download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop
Close any Firefox browsers you may have open
Double click the icon to launch the program
Make sure the following options are checked:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (Problem only)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
    Click Go and once the scan is completed a Result.txt Notepad document will open on your desktop
    Please copy and paste the contents in your reply

I have been using AVG and Malwarebytes together. Should I not do that?
It doesn't fit into the time frame of the current issues anyway.

 

Also, when I started up my computer this morning, an error message popped up. "There was a problem starting C:\Users\Michelle\AppData\Roaming\atpcs.dll"

I have been using AVG and Malwarebytes together. Should I not do that?
It doesn't fit into the time frame of the current issues anyway.

It is not a general problem, but there were a few minor issues when the latest Malwarebytes updated version was released.


Windows7 Hosts file restore, Since yours has been corrupted - First run this M/soft Fixit >
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9668866 < Click run and follow any on screen directions.

 

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner.
Note: You can use Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox for this scan.

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start.
  • If asked, allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Click Start.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is checked and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked.
  • Click Scan - It is not unusual for the program to take up to 2 hours from this stage.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

 

Last - Download Windows repair tool
Note : The download is Not the big Green Download, but the black and white arrow in mid top of screen
Extract to your Desktop and launch the Repair_Windows.exe file
Click on Start repairs tab - Click on Start
Leave the Checkmarked options as they are.

Checkmark Restart System When Finished option
Click the Start button - The black/grey screen will run for about 30 to 60 minutes and inform you of the progress.
Your System should restart after repair has finished

Oh, and I ran the Microsoft Fix it as well.

After the Windows repair tool ran and restarted my computer, I still got the pop up error about "There was a problem starting C:\Users\Michelle\AppData\Roaming\atpcs.dll"

Also, the "Not Responding" thing is still happening consistently.

Download and run the free Autoruns program - Use it to scroll down to find and Untick the reference to "C:\Users\Michelle\AppData\Roaming\atpcs.dll".

NOTE:  Do not click on it and select Delete, just Untick the entry at the start of the line.

 

Reboot and tell us if the situation changes -

Thank you, the program was run and upon reboot, I did not get that atpcs.dll error.


Still getting sporadic Not Responding errors.

Do the "Not Responding errors" contain anything else like an Error number Etc ??

 

Not Responding can relate to so many things. Is this online or just with an open desktop ?

 

Is the error when you try to open a game or file of any kind of icon or item from Programs ?

 

Still going back to your errors and trying to find a few answers to some obscure problems -

How often will this occur with Quickbooks as that seems to be one of the major program problems you are having

Sorry for the slow response!

There's no error number, it's just a general (Not Responding) at the top of the browser or program. It's happening in Firefox, Chrome, also while just accessing folders on my computer, accessing both internal and external drives, and also happening consistently in Photoshop & Lightroom. On most occasions, the program will eventually "catch up" and start working again after about 30 seconds to a minute, but in some cases I have to exit the program and restart.

I have not had this error happen in Quickbooks (I don't use it that often).
As for other programs, it happens with Lightroom with almost every use, and with Firefox it happens a few times a day.

I have not had this error happen in Quickbooks (I don't use it that often).

Hi -

If you do not use Quickbooks on any regular basis, are you able to save the data and Un/Reinstall the program.

The errors above (and other similar ones) are quite consistant in your report, as you can read.

 

I do not wish you to lose any important data, so if the important items can be saved to a cheap External Drive first, this would allow you to access any already collected data and you can save other Quickbooks items there also.

Also your version is listed as QuickBooks Pro 2011 (Version: 21.0.4011.904), so there may be an update for this.

 

Please run a sfc /scannow check. No Disks are required for Windows 7 or Vista -

Go Start > Programs > Accessories and find Command Prompt > Right click on this and select Run as Administrator > Type sfc /scannow

Note the space between c and / as this is inportant - Press Enter and allow the 15 minute scan to complete.

This will check installed files against original install -
