Fix boot commands won't execute

When I go to cmd I get C:\docs and settings\my name> when I type fixmbr or fixboot they won't execute.  I also can't get back to the C: root

You can't run those commands from within Windows.

You need to boot to Recovery Console to execute them.

The fixmbr command is only available when you are using the Recovery Console.  Do you have it installed?

 

If you don't have the XP installation disc you will need to download one, you can download a legal ISO file for this here.  It will need to be the same as the version you have installed, eg XP Home, XP Pro., etc.

 

You can find instructions for installing the recovery console and how to use it at Microsoft Support.
