Hello,

Large disks take hours for checking, soit is pos it be very convenient to perform it when we do not need to use the computer.

How can I set a chkdsk to run e.g at night and turn the computer off when it ends instead of booting, please?

Hi Straydog -

Why do you want to shut it down ? This sounds like a several hour job, and no Internet is needed.

Turn off the internet and just let the program run. It will go to sleep or standby after a while.

Many people leave computers running 24 / 7, so just leave it to run, or is this a problem ??

Thank You -

When you are finished for the day, use these directions > >

Run a Disk Check on your C: (or selected drive) drive in Windows :

•Click Start and open Computer
•Right-click on C: (or your selected Hard Drive letter) and select Properties
•Click on the Tools tab
•Under Error-checking click the Check Now... button
•Mark the 2 boxes next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
•Click on the Start button
•When the message box pops up, click the Schedule disk check button and >> Restart << your computer
•Once your computer restarts it will check the drive, don't press any keys so that it is allowed to do so

This will take between 1 and 2 hours (or more on a larger drive), then reboot back to Normal mode, once finished.

The computer can be left to run (or go to sleep) after this, as it will not harm anything -

Very Simple - Regards -

You can schedule a SHUTDOWN timer at startup. After CHKDSK when system boots up timer gets triggered and will shutdown the system.

How to schedule a shutdown timer?

Press Windows+R key and type

shell:startup and click ok

This should take you to User startup folder.

Now open a new text document or notepad and type this command in text file

shutdown -s -t 300

Here 300 refers to 300 seconds which means shutdown will occur in 5 minutes.

Save the file as

Filename:shutdown.bat
Save as type:All files

Copy the shutdown bat file to startup folder. Now schedule chkdsk, restart the PC.When system boots up after chkdsk ,this shutdown timer gets triggered at startup and will shutdown the system.

This timer will run at every startup. To abort the timer ,just Press Windows+R key and type

shutdown -a

This command will abort the process.Go to startup folder and delete the file.

Yes, it is a problem, and the more people to do it the worse it is. Have you heard about pollution? Do you know what countries pollute more and why? A desk computer can consume a half of a small air conditioning, did you know? That is the first and greatest problem, and the second one is because it costs money and I better use it on something more useful. Isn't it for all this why hibernation exists?

An almost reasonable reply -

I have Power Adaptors (free from our government) and I can set them to shut down after 1 / 2 / or 3 hours.

Note that an average check will take about 1 to 2 hours and a larger drive may take up to 3 hours .........

These are also attached to our TVs so they can turn off power Fully, not to Stand-by, if you go to sleep.

The power light flashes after your chosen hours, so you can reactivate by use of the item, or let it shut down.

This is Not a Standby device, but a Full Power cut off tool. You need to look for these wink.png

I am a dedicated power saver, as I am a pensioner that needs to save on all costs where I can.

A desk computer can consume a half of a small air conditioning < A bit over the top unless you have a very old CRT screen and an old computer that is not well maintained.

Average use is about 1/4 of what you claim (Yes I did research this) and I do not use air conditioning just a small heater -

I only gave you an example in my reply, and not what I do -

Thank You -

EDITED for spelling -

Hello noknojon, sorry for taking so long to answer you- I have been busy, including chasing the bleep out of my computer.

When I answered you, it was to your first post on this thread, as well as your instructions unrelated to my question. To be true I also felt ashamed when reading narenxp’s helping answer because it was so obvious that I should have found it myself. Nevertheless, his answer did help me shaking my mind. I was having a very bad time after trying to get rid of obstructive (and destructive) Comodo firewall using an application I found on Comodo’s forums that almost demolished my OS and made lots of problems on one of my disks which spread to the others. I was very upset and your post was really against all conceived and reasonable principles.

I am also retired too, and cannot spend too much money, so turning the computer off after a long time night job is a must to add to the other mentioned environmental reasons. I don’t have a portable, but a desktop, and it obviously uses much more power. No, I don’t have a CRT monitor. I bought a new one (LED/LCD) less than two years ago to replace what at the time of purchase had been the best Dell I had for over 19 years, and believe-me I regret it a lot to the point of considering the possibility of buying another old fashion CRT and get rid of this new rubbish, which is reputed as a good Asus. The old Dell had a better image, contrast, colours and definition then any new generation monitors, completely flat. I know it by experience. I used to use it in a not very bright room, and now, with the new one, if I use the same lighting I get nearly blind in less than one hour. I have to have plenty of light in the room. Sometimes I have to change Firefox background to grey. Unbelievable! The explorer with its present uncontrollable background colour is a real torture.

From your last post I see you also try not to waste power, very well, but it leaves me astonished when I remember your advice on the opposite direction. Furthermore, I believe you know that – as I said – any sort of power often costs twice what as in countries that are pocketing the resources of other less developed countries and polluting them as it is happening in Africa, or killing their own people on wars to maintain their grip on power sources and keep tem cheap. It is a way of stealing and modern slavery in the name of democracy.

Your last post shows you are a much more understandable person when you think by yourself and give advice according to your own mind. Thank you for your last post, it was a pleasure after all.

Sorry if it is so badly written, but I am short of time. I had to check the disks for three times and it took me three nights and too many hours. Well, I saved my personal files, not only the system. Keep Comodo as far from you as you can. I still have the browser going to its page when a URL is not found. I cleared its IPs from my TCP/IP4 settings, but it caused so many problems that I had to replace the system disk with an image I had in stock. Do you know how to get rid of this, avoiding further problems, please?

And can I just add Thank You for posting back smile.png I did not mean to offend you (or anyone) with my reply

Please feel free to continue with any other questions that you may have in the future. Like Comodo removal etc.

**** End of log ****

Maybe I should have attached this log because it is a bit too long for direct display.

The TCP/IP4 properties still show Comodo's IPs at Use the following DNS server addresses to 8.26.56.26 and 156.154.70.22.

Some event errors might have originated when I clicked on Shutdown by mistake, and then cancelled when it was already closing, a little while before getting this log.

Edit: Now I cant connect using Webdrive. When I try, It sends this error: "Can't ma network drive: (1204) The specified network provider is invalid." What will this be now? Never happened before.

No - Better to be open as this makes it easier to read, or we need to save to a doc file and refer back too often

Thanks -

Hi -
I have made a quick list of items that I would uninstall, and included some information on some of them -
GetRight Control Anti-virus SecurityCheck.exe - Error: Description: Faulting application name: ToGetRight.exe.This constantly shows in many errors - Also do you know where you downloaded this from ??
Advanced System Optimizer
µTorrent
(Version: 2.2.1) - Unless you feel that need it -
MailWasherPro.exe - Not a fan  of this as it is installed in some OEM computers - Choice is yours -
BitTorrent (Version: 7.2.0) - As  Above -
eReg - This software is a generates a report of registry, startup, BHO, Toolbar, Service and Uninstall Entries from your computer.

Java™ 6 Update 31 - Please note that neither Java or Adobe Reader are out of date. Agree, but you Must delete the older versions
Java 7 Update 10

Little Registry Cleaner  Note: During installation, you're prompted to agree to install a browser toolbar, an ASPCA add-on, and to change your default browser search provider and homepage to another. Just uncheck those options and decline the toolbar and add-on installations.

Enable DHCP windows 7 - Should be on by default.

Thank You -

Thank you for relying. I'll try to answer your points as good as I can.

GetRight – I don't know what GetRight Control Anti-virus SecurityCheck.exe is, but I do know about GetRight. I bought it a few years ago with the right for updates from its site. It is  a good downloader, not like those trying to install all the time. Try it and see. You can choose the directory, have groups and lots more. Tough, it has not had updates for over one year now, and lately, it started crashing at starting. Maybe the source of the issues you rightly mention. I think I have to uninstall it clean and reinstall.

Advanced System Optimizer – I rarely use it, not really necessary because I either do not use the options or do most of what it does in different ways. Not really necessary and can uninstall it

µTorrent (Version: 2.2.1) – This is an old version that I don't have, but I am thinking of giving it up because the new version that I have is so different in behaviour from the old and well known ones and added ads that I hate it. I was so disappointed that I even wrote a post on their forum mentioning many of their new wrong options, reduced functionality and other silly ideas.

MailWasherPro.exe – There is more spam every year and for that it is useful. What do you have instead? The only way to resist spam is to delete an e-mail account and have a new one, but that is very inconvenient.

BitTorrent (Version: 7.2.0) – It is an old version that I kept because I believe the new one will be like µTorrent's. I am thinking of replacing both.

eReg – This is part of Logitech software for my mouse. It is made by Acresso Software Inc. for them. I can't uninstall that. I do not have any toolbar. If it makes makeshift, can you explain better what and what I can do, please? Then I can talk to Logitech support.

Java™ 6 Update 31 – When I received version 7 for the first time I deleted version 6 because I know the installer does not do it. Now, when I saw the entry in the log I searched and couldn't find any file. It must be there because it says so, but where? I will have to search the registry.

Little Registry Cleaner – I never install toolbars.

Enable DHCP windows 7 – It was enabled, it seems. See the picture, if it is there (TCP/IPv4 » Advanced), please.

As I said before, what caused all these problems was trying to uninstall Comodo completely. Before, I cleared their TCP/IP numbers and got problems. I put them back. Now I need to get rid of them without getting any more problems.

Thank you very much for trying to help.

Edit: I finished to search the registry for the old Java, but all paths I found were /jre7/.

Hi -
Many of these things are listed in reports but are hidden in normal operations -

I was able to locate GetRight, but the GetRight Control Anti-virus SecurityCheck.exe is very obscure -
Advanced System Optimizer - Can include a hidden Antivirus component,  so I usually say to delete it -
Both the Torrent programs are optional, but are always a source of infection -
Little Registry Cleaner was listed, as B.C. is very anti Registry Cleaner programs -
DHCP was listed as Disabled, but it is usually enabled by default -
MailWasherPro.exe - What do you have instead? My simple Yahoo has the best Spam Filter I have seen -

My standard Java post -
1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.
Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.
2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...
Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it.
•Run JavaRa.exe (Vista and 7 users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
•Accept any prompts.

Is the COMODO Version - COMODO Internet Security Premium or Comodo Firewall or COMODO Firewall Pro ?
I need to know the exact version of Comodo and if it had a Year listing or other details -

Hello,

GetRight Control Anti-virus SecurityCheck.exe – Could this name include a reference to the download, because I did use GetRight to download it? I can’t find SecurityCheck.exe in the log. I copied the issues from the log and sent them to GetRight by e-mil. Let’s wait for their answer.

Little Registry Cleaner is from SouceForge, and I took it because I believe to be a trused site and also read it was not too hard on the registry. Its last update is from May 2012.

DHCP was enabled, so if MiniToolBox reported not it must have got the information somewhere where it is wrong, or else the entry in TCP/IP itself is wrong itself. For me, either the source or the TCP/IP window is wrong and not MiniToolBox. I can’t correct any of them because I don’t know where. I wanted to clear the box, save, put it back and save again, but the butons (Add…, Edit… and Remove…) are greyed. I looked at TCP/IPv6 corresponding setting  and it says Automatic configuration only.

Mailwasher – I have Yahoo mail for ages too, but I still let lots of spam. To check the filters I redirected them to a folder, but most escapes the filtering bowdown.gif. That is why I got Mailwasher.

JavaCongratulations! You have the recommended Java installed (Version 7 Update 13).
Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) – Not installed.
The Java removal log gives an error:

JavaRa 1.16 Removal Log.
Report follows after line.
------------------------------------
The JavaRa removal process was started on Fri Feb 15 17:24:28 2013

There was an error removing C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-ABCDEFFDCBA}. The error returned was 124.

Then it repeats this line changing only the fraction 0000 to 0001, 0002, 0003, until 0022, until

Finished reporting.

Firefox was closed (checked on Task Manager), but why should it try and remove Firefox extensions (add-ons and plugins)?

Comodo version – I downloaded the free internet security, but installed only the firewall, or at least I used only that part of it.

I deleted some of its leftover files by hand, like cmdguar.sys, guard32,sys, guard64.sys, cmderd.sys, cmdhlp.sys, inspect.sys and others, and many registry entries, also using Revo to search and it found.

Thank you for the continued help.

Fully remove Comodo free internet security -
First I hope you make a backup with E.R.U.N.T. The Emergency Recovery Utility NT, as this includes Regestry alterations -
Gee they make sure that the program is well embedded in your system -

Here are two given ways of manually removing left overs of CIS and related entries:
Method 1:-

Uninstall CIS and reboot. Then run Comodo System Cleaner to get rid off registry keys.
Then delete the Comodo folders under Program Files, Program Files\Common Files, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ .
For Vista/Win7
Users\%username%\appdata\local\,  Users\%username%\appdata\roaming\  and  \Users\%username%\appdata\local\virtual store
To be even more thorough open Device Manager and set it to show hidden devices under menu option View.
Then see if there are Comodo driver(s) left in non Plug and Play drivers.
If so select the driver --> click right --> uninstall and reboot.
Now delete the following:
C:\boot.ini.comodofirewall (this file may not exist).
WARNING: Do not mistakenly remove the original “boot.ini”.
     C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\cmdGuard.sys

*Note: It may not be possible to remove these "LEGACY" keys.  If you cannot delete them, leave them in the registry.
However, I have subsequently found that you MAY be able to remove these keys in Safe Mode by using a third-party registry tool.

To permanently remove them may also require modifying the Permissions for each key.  See: http://forums.comodo.com/help_for_v3/comprehensive_instructions_for_completely_removing_comodo_firewall_pro_info-t17220.0.html;msg119226#msg119226

Method 2:-  (a more general approach):

We are gonna take a look to see if there are some old drivers of your previously uninstalled  security programs are still around. Go to Device Manager --> View --> show hidden devices --> now look under Non Plug and Play drivers --> when you see a driver that belongs to your previous security programs click right --> uninstall --->  reboot your computer.
When the problem persists make sure there are no auto starts from your previous security programs. Download Autoruns and run it.
This program finds about all auto starts in Windows. This tool can therefore seriously damage Windows when not handled properly. After starting go to Options and choose to hide Windows and Microsoft entries, to include empty locations and then push F5 to refresh.
Now check all entries to see if there are references to your previous security program. When you find them untick them.
After unticking reboot your computer and see what happens.
