Hello.

I recently noticed my computer was slow and decided to pop up task manager to take a look. What I noticed was that there would be multiple internet explorer processes running (minimum three). These are even visible in the applications tab, usually consisting of two separate hidden windows that are not visible on my task bar.

These internet explorer applications appear to be accessing several different websites, including youtube, some tarot card forum and some ip addresses that I do not wish to pursue. I am suspecting my computer is part of a botnet and is being used to send spam.

I remember after viewing a Chinese movie a few days ago, I did receive a dialog box a few days ago asking to permit changes to flash. I clicked "No".

An odd thing is that if I open up Chrome, additional chrome processes would be added (more than one).

I have run a scan by Malwarebytes. It did remove a few things in my temporary internet files and a registry key, but the behavior still continues.

So summary:

- multiple internet explorer processes running in background

- did previously receive a dialog box asking for flash player changes, clicked NO

- have run Malwarebytes, deleted a few things, behavior still continues

- opening one chrome window adds multiple chrome processes to background

What should I do?

Thank you.

Please copy the lower part of TDSSkiller log and paste it here.Last few lines is enough.

Malwarebytes

--------------------

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.  If you already have it installed launch the program and update the database.

  • Important!! When you save the mbam-setup file, rename it to something random (such as 123abc.exe) before beginning the download.  You can also right click on the link and select Save Link As

Malwarebytes may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on the renamed file to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to this Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings except to uncheck any offer for a free Pro trial version
  • Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes when done.

Note: If Malwarebytes encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes from removing all the malware.

Junkware Removal Tooll by thisisu

-------------------

  • Please download Junkware Removal Tool and save it to your desktop.

Rkill

-------------------

Please download Rkill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below (if one of them does not work try another...) and save it to your desktop:

  • Double-click on Rkill. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
    • Note:  You may have to run Rkill a few times before it is successful.  You may also have to download Rkill from a different link which will save it as a different file name.
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • An Rkill.log will appear.  Please copy and paste the contents in your reply (file also located at c:\rkill.log)
  • Do not reboot your computer after running Rkill as the malware programs will start again.  If your computer reboots, run Rkill again before continuing on to the next step.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply.

You need to wait until Autoruns gets populated

  • Double click autoruns.exe (not autorunsc.exe), select Run, then Run again and allow the information to populate
  • Select File, Save, Desktop (in the left hand pane), then Save filename as Autoruns.txt and change Save as type to  Text(*.txt).

The thing is I've kept autorun open for roughly 45 min already and I've clicked - it doesn't do anything. And no, I haven't restarted my computer or reactivated my antivirus.

I see a lot of entries, some yellow highlighted and some pink.

Bottom left box says Ready, bottom right box says Windows Entries hidden.

Is there an alternative? Maybe running the command line version?

P.S. Might I add that aswMBR appears to crash when encountering extremely long filenames? I had to delete SolidWorks in order to get it to finish.

Does that mean I have to repeat some steps? Like RSkill?

I would need to restart my computer.

Just verifying before proceeding.

Can you try from safemode?

I tried Autoruns in safe mode, no internet connection. Same result. I could see all the entries, but saving didnt do anything.

However I noticed a few new things.

1) Upon restarting the computer and entering the normal mode (this was after my trial with safe mode), this dialog box popped up:

"There was a problem starting

C:\Users\Henry\AppData\Roaming\sgowi.dll

The specified module could not be found."

2) the fact that background internet explorer processes or applications no longer are there on startup.

There are some other things that I'm not really sure if they are oddities or not.

When I manually open internet explorer, there are TWO internet explorer processes. when I open up chrome, there are THREE chrome processes, all of which take up 56,000 K, 36,000 K and 31,000 K respectively. These processes will close if I close the chrome/explorer window.

Things do seem a bit faster now.

edit: yeah maybe ignore that last part. I'm relatively new to chrome, just read an article on its memory usage. Interesting use of multiple processes. Also with Internet Explorer there's LCIE. Seems interesting I'm going to read more about it.

Actually i was trying to fix the error using Autoruns.

Press Windows+R key and type

regedit and click ok

Go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

On right side, delete the entries that shows

C:\Users\Henry\AppData\Roaming\sgowi.dll

C:\Users\Henry\AppData\Roaming\ntvcht.dll

Launch Adware cleaner and clicked on DELETE,post the generated log

Restart the PC and let me know if you have any more issues.

Alright some things did happen.

I did delete the sgowi.dll

However I could not find an ntcvht.dll in that section.

Then I launched the adware cleaner, told me to restart so I did. Find the log posted below.

Upon restarting, nothing happened. I did notice though that upon entering chrome, it seems all my preferences have been reset/wiped. Oh well.
