Windows XP SP 3, i3 processor MicroCenter system.  Can boot to my desktop.  All program icons are present.  When I click on a desktop icon, the program will not launch.  When I try to launch IE, it flashes and then shuts down.  I use a wireless receiver to access in the internet and it will not launch either, so I am unable to access the internet.  The only program or docs I can open are Adobe PDF files.  Using the Add/Remove program today, I removed a 2 program my son had put on the computer for me, Steam, a gaming website and Panda Anti-virus both of which I was not using.  This problem seems to have arisen after that -- but I am not sure it if was that or just the timing of it.

This is being submitted from an alt computer.

Thank you in advance,

Rob

Ara ...

THANK YOU for your prompt reply.

When I went to publish the Snapshot, I received a message saying "The server name or address could not be resolved."  I suspect that this could be because I am currently unable to access the internet on that computer.  As I cannot connect to the internet with the system which has the issue, I have been unable to get the Speccy information to this computer.  I tried to load the snaphot on to a flashdrive then move it to this computer, but my system is telling me it is unable to open the file from the flash drive.  I have saved the .speccy and the .txt files on my flash drive.

Suggestions?

Thank you,

Rob

Aussie,

Yes, the computer I am using to post the information is on the same internet connection (wireless modem) as the one that is having problems.   Let me see if I can figure out if and how I might be able to connect the one that is bad using an Ethernet cable -- don't know right now if that will be possible given the location of the modem and the bad computer, but let me think about how I might be able to work it.   I'll work on that tomorrow and post back as soon as I know one way or the other.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Cheers

Rob

Hi Rob -

I will not be here for a day, but if you can please post the above Speccy plus any of these items you can >

First -

Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE or HERE, and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Next -
Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following boxes:
•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
List devices >>(Problem only)<<
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files
Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt) in your next reply -
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Next -

Remove temporary and junk files
To clean out your temporary internet files and temp files.
Download TFC by OldTimer from HERE to your desktop.

Double-click TFC.exe to run it.

Note: If you are running on Vista / Windows7, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator

TFC will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
* Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process.
* Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.
* Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished.
Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning.

Regards -

Aussie,

I was able to hard connect my bad computer to the modem via Ethernet cable, however the "two computer" icon in the bottom tray is not present and I cannot make a connection -- well at least not using IE or Firefox.   I was unable to run Speccy beyond what is posted above.  TFC ran what looks to be successfully...it asked to reboot and did so successfully.

Below are the other reports.

Cheers

Running from "I:\" < 7 Drive i: () (Removable) (Total:1.87 GB) (Free:1.81 GB) FAT
Did you run the scan fron your computers Desktop. or an external drive ??

Do you use GoToAssist  for Corporate use or Private use - Personally I would Uninstall it if not used -

Total Fragmentation on Drive C:: 19% Defragment your hard drive soon! (Do NOT defrag if SSD!)
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware version 1.62.0.1300 Please try to update your Malwarebytes program, this is a fairly old version

You connected to the internet OK, but the speed readings seem very slow.
Run this on the Problem computer, and then on the Non problem computer to check if they are similar
Click on and run Speed Test - Be sure to totally ignore all advertising on the site -
Please post back your results -

Thank You -

Aussie,

Hello.  I'm kind of stuck here.   In reviewing where you are saying that I connected to the internet, I can see that too, however none of my browsers (IE or Mozilla) will initialize, therefore I am unable to access the internet.  This means I am unable to update Malwarebytes. The internal HDD is NOT an SSD.   As for Speedtest, on the good computer, it is 26.32 down and 19.54 up... Before the problem happened, this was a little faster but not much than the bad computer.  My ISP (Cox Comm) says I should have  something like 65 down.  I've had them here 3x to see what is wrong.  All they say is, hmm...hmmm....and then leave....typical of Cox here in the US.  GoTo Assist has been removed.  I ran the Scan from my Flash Drive.  thank you for your continued help.   Cheers, Rob

Method 1: Disable IPv6
a.     Right click on the Network icon in the System Tray and click on Network and Sharing center.
b.     Click on Change Adapter settings.
c.     Right click on Network Adapter and Choose ‘Properties’.
d.     Uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6”.
e.     Click on OK.

Note: By disabling IPv6, you will not be able to use Windows Meeting Space or any application that relies on the Windows Peer-to-Peer Networking platform

Method 2: Change TCP/IP Settings
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-TCP-IP-settings

Method 3:
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.
Go > Start > Run > Type CMD to open a command prompt > OK -
In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands:
Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.
Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log (Note the spaces)
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog
Reboot the computer.

Each one is worth a try -

Aussie,

Hello.  I was able to successfully get the last option to work.  The first did not as I do not have a network icon in the system tray (the only one showing is for Wireless Connection 2): choice 2 did not work as it appears to be geared to Win 7 not XP and as such the steps they provided were not avail on this end.

Choice 3 did work successfully, at least to the extent that after typing in the WINSOCK reset command, I was instructed to reboot the system, which I did.

Having rebooted, I do not note any change in the system and am still unable to connect to the internet.

This is a puzzle wrapped inside an enigma.

Thank you for your continued help.

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Rob -
Please post in the Am I infected? What do I do? area of the forum.
There may be someone there that can help you or give some better advice than I currently am -

Sorry but I have exhausted our options available in this area of the forum.

Thank You -

Another thing you can try is reinstalling windows or opening up your browser and typing your ip in the omnibox and going to your modem configuration and reboot it?Or you can unplug the modem and plug it back in.
