Hi: I posted this question on another site, but they recommended I come to you. During the last few days, Norton Internet Security has alerted me a number of times that it has blocked Trojan.Gen.2 and has quarantined W32.Xpiro.D. The recommended action says that it is resolved, but I keep getting these same alerts about those same viruses a while later. Also, right after Norton's alert, a pop-up appears saying it's an update to Adobe Flash Player and wanting to install something. I do not download that because I suspect it's associated with the viruses but it's hard to get rid of because you can't cancel it, you have to restart the computer to get rid of it. I've done a full scan several times but Norton doesn't find anything. I tried downloading and scanning with the Norton Power Eraser but it only came up with a few "unknown" files that it didn't recommend deleting. I also noticed there were a few Windows security updates that I hadn't installed, so I downloaded those but it doesn't prevent the Norton alerts from coming back. I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, 32-bit operating system, make of computer is HP. Is there something nasty hidden on my computer that keeps regenerating? Or is there another reason those viruses are drawn to my computer? Though I would greatly appreciate the feedback of any experts, I only have a very basic understanding of computers so the simpler the explanation, the better! :) Thank you so much! Janette

Hi:

Sorry for not getting back here sooner, I wanted to get an external hard drive and make sure everything was fully backed up in case it turns out my computer has more serious problems.

The Norton messages about blocking Trojan.Gen2 and quarantining other files, along with the fake Adobe Flash Player update are now happening about once every 1 - 3 days.  Other than that, the computer is running normally and it seems like nothing is wrong.  It's kind of puzzling as to whether Norton is really taking care of everything or whether something is lurking in the background.  I have done Windows and browser updates and have updated Adobe Flash Player (from it's proper website).

I'll post the logs below.  Thanks for your help!

You're infected with ZeroAccess rootkit.

It'll require elevated help.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6.  If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<==  Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Hi Broni:

Thanks very much for checking the logs and getting back to me.

I'm wondering now if it's not just better to reformat the hard drive.

Anyhow, many thanks for your help!

Jan

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the logs you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another Malware Removal Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.
