Hello meinstwok

*It is a good idea to print off these instructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
It is important that you complete the following instructions in the correct order, and also that you don't miss anything out!

I see you have Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Updating Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
You have a SurfSideKick infection. To remove this simply click on start, then run, and type :

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe /u

Then press the OK button. It should start the uninstall procedure. If it asks you to type in the code that is displayed, please do so and reboot. The program "should" be uninstalled now.

Please download Ewido anti-malware ; it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido by double-clicking on the icon on your desktop.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates
Don't run it yet.

* Download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to a folder of it’s own (c:\BFU).
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

Next to the 'scriptfile to execute'-window you'll see a little icon as shown in next picture: Posted Image
When you click that icon, a little window will open that says: 'Please enter the full URL to the sript you want to execute'
In the field, copy and paste next URL:

http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu

Click Ok.
Then click execute in Brute Force Uninstaller.

Extra note:
If nothing happens after pressing the Execute button, this means that the script didn't download. In that case, download the script ( alcanshorty.bfu ) manually from above url ( rightclick on it and choose 'save as' and save it in your BFU-folder). Then start BFU.exe again and click the browse button next to the 'scriptfile to execute'-window
Browse to the script you downloaded and Click Ok and Execute in Brute Force Uninstaller.

Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Reboot into SAFE MODE
By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

*Now start a new scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items (if present):

When I try to uninstall surfsidekick through the Run command, "C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe /u" I get an error message stating, "Windows cannot find 'C:\Program'. Make sure you typed the name correctly...". I thought this was odd since it only mentions Program and not the entire file hierarchy in the error message. Should I uninstall through the regular control panel add/remove programs function? I had tried that earlier, outside of your instruction process, and it seemed to make popups worse after rebooting and did not remove surfsidekick 3.

Hi there,

It looks as though your previous attempts to remove SurfSideKick have deleted the uninstaller. Not to worry though, please continue with the rest of the instructions, skipping the SurfSideKick uninstall process.

Good luck and regards,
David

I was unable to save an ewido log. For some reason the function was not accessible. Also, the Look2me destroyer application never loaded up again automatically when I restarted. I restarted several times but only get the message "error loading w0021207.dll" However a l2medestroyer log did appear on my desktop.

Here is my latest Hijackthis log

Hello meinstwok

I see that a program you have installed most likely interfered with our fixes.

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

I see Norton Scriptblocking service present.
I want you to disable it as it may interfere with next fix.

* Disable the Script Blocking Service:
  • To open Services, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
  • Find ScriptBlocking services, Right-click the service, and then click and then click Properties. On the General tab, under Startup, click Disabled.
  • Under Service Status, click Stop button. Click Apply button.
* Disable the Script Blocking In Norton Settings:
  • Start Norton Antivirus.
  • Click Options. If a menu appears when you click Options, then click Norton Antivirus. The Norton Antivirus Options dialog box appears.
  • Click Script Blocking.
  • Uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
  • Click OK
You can reenable it afterwards when everything is clean again.

The uninstaller list you posted is very promising, I don't see anything bad there, apart from one entry. The reason that surfsidekick did not uninstall is that you didn't include the quotes " " around the command when you ran it. That's my own fault though as I didn't add that to start with. Therefore please run the command again using:
Let's get started with the next step:
"C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe /u"

Your Look2Me infection is now gone, so that's a promising sign. Please follow the next instructions as carefully as possible and do not skip any steps. It is a good idea to print off these instructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.

* Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs. From within add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist by double-clicking on the following entries:

Select CashBack

Please run the alcanshorty.bfu brute force script using the instructions in my first post to you. It is likely that the programs you have installed were stopping it's work.

*Now start a new scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items (if present):

David,

I still wasn't able to uninstall surfsidekick with the run command, even when including the quotes. Should I uninstall through add/remove programs? Also I turned off my tea timer but couldn't find references to any scriptblocker. Finally, I could not boot up in regular safe mode, my username password combination wasn't accepted, only by booting up in safemode with networking could I get in. Anyway here is the latest Hijackthis log.

Hi again meinstwok.

Before we do anything else we have to get rid of SurfSideKick. Don't worry though, it normally is this tough to remove! Please delete all the Brute Force Uninstaller files/folders from your desktop as we are going to download it again.

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right-click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk ( C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download SideKickFix.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Please close ALL other open windows & explorer folder's, then double-click on sidekickFix.bat.
Click YES and follow the prompts, when prompted to restart the PC please do so.
Then please post back with a fresh HijackThis log by using AddReply.

David

Hello meinstwok

Well SurfSideKick is still there as you can probably see. We'll give this one more go before we try something else, or a different strategy. It is a good idea to print off these instructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
It is important that you complete the following instructions in the correct order, and also that you don't miss anything out!

* Please download the following regfile to your desktop. When it is finished downloading, double-click on it and confirm with Yes when it asks if you would like to merge the data with registry.

Fixssk.reg

*Boot into Safe Mode (without networking support!)

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xmyihsnA] C:\WINDOWS\xmyihsnA.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs303169566.dll

* Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed and click on "Fix Checked" and exit HijackThis when finished.

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\xmyihsnA.exe <--file
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3 <--folder

* Then do an Windows Search for the following files and delete if present:

repairs303169566.dll <---delete any instances of that file if found.

* Reboot back into normal mode and post a new HJT log.

I tried the instructions but I was unable to get rid of surfsidekick. While in safe mode running Hijackthis I was unable to fix the problems. I noticed that I would get an error message whenever I selected the repairs303169566.dll in Hijackthis but would not get that message when solely fixing the other selected problems. Also I was unable manually delete any of the surfsidekick files manually or by using the Hijackthis function while in safemode. I would get a message that ssk.exe is in use by another progam, but I couldn't find that application in the running processes in the taskmanager. Here is the latest Hijackthis log

Hello again.

Well we have everything else that's bad out the window, but we just need to get that surfside kick. He's the next thing I want you to try:

Download killbox from here -->KillBox

Unzip the folder to your desktop.

1. Start Killbox.exe
2. Select the Delete on Reboot option.
3. Copy the complete text in bold below to the clipboard by highlighting the filepaths and pressing Control + C:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3
C:\WINDOWS\System32\repairs303169566.dll

4. Go to the File menu of Killbox, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
5. Click the Delete File button that is a red-and-white X. When asked if you want to delete these files say Yes. When asked if you want to reboot now, say Yes.
6. Exit Killbox.

Once the computer has rebooted please open Hijackthis and fix any of these that are there:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs303169566.dll

Then post a new HJT log.
