Hi James, this is ielle from your post with regards to the hard drive which became raw so here is the situation I ran into:

I followed your guide in backing up the file through the parted magic - file manager steps and here is what happened:

1. At first, I can view all my folders and files (i.e. I have separate folders for my videos, music, personal files, pics, and so on) through the file manager after mounting the good and bad drive

2. I tried copying one file folder from my videos folder (I have subfolders in the videos folder and I selected one subfolder for sample coying)

3. Upon copying the files, I encountered an error ( I think because on of the drives have accidentally been disconnected, but I am not 100% sure)

4. I closed the error tab which prompted and dismounted the tabs, I looked if there were files copied into the good drive and there were around 50% of the video files copied.

5. I logged out of parted magic, tried to open the good drive in windows to test the copied files and saw most were okay. there was one file which I think was in the middle of being copied when the error occured so that is why it ended up corrupted.

6. I logged into parted magic again to try and see if I can copy the said subfolder successfully, however upon openning the Videos folder, it was empty, even the other subfolder which I did not tried to copy were not read.

7. I tried to copy a different folder file, my personal file folder, this time trying to copy the whole folder instead of just a subfolder and I again encountered an error in copying.

The same thing happened, upon logging back to see and try to copy the personal file folder, the folder is empty.

But if you look at the volume information of the drive when it is highlighted, it shows that my files are still there (i.e the volume of my drive is like 162 of 981GB of space is remaining), but then when I open the folders, I cannot see the content of my video files and personal files anymore but the folders are viewable, all other folders are still viewable including its contents like my picture folder, music folder, etc.

I tried to use the testdisk steps and here is what happened:

1. I was able to copy everything else - the unaffected folders
2. I tried to go deeper into the Videos and the Personal file folder but I still could not see my files, all I can see were ones with one period(.) and then one with (..) which I figured out was there for all of the folders.

I hope you can advise me on this, hopefully my files are not gone because it would totally suck, there are a lot of important files in my personal file folder and there are also irreplaceable videos (ones filmed by me which are mostly my dance and choreography stuff). I want to recover most of them if not all.

Thanks!

Hi Ielle

Thanks for all the information.

It appears that there are some problems with the filesystem on that drive. That's what this line means in the testdisk.log
NTFS Volume is dirty
This means that Windows will want to run chkdsk on it to repair the filesystem.

Please try this (it's very similar to what you did before)...
Boot into PartedMagic.

Open the Terminal window (the icon that looks like a monitor in the lower left by the Mount Devices icon) and type
testdisk
and press enter

Select CREATE and press enter
Select the external 1TB drive and choose Proceed and hit enter
It should automatically have Intel selected, hit enter
Select Advanced and hit enter
Highlight the partition.
at the bottom of the screen highlight BOOT and hit enter.

We need to know what it says about the 'boot sector' and the 'backup boot sector'.

Does it say...
Boot Sector
OK

Backup Boot Sector
OK

Sectors are identical

or does it say something different? If so, what is different?

Also, what happens when you try to view the drive in Windows? Does it ask to be formatted?

James

Hi James, I did what you told me and the results are what you have posted above. Boot Sector is OK and Backup boot sector is also OK and that Sectors are identical.

When I connect the drive to windows, it does ask for it to be formatted to be used.

Upon checking on the disk management - the status is healthy but the file system is raw

Hi

I'd like to try to get that Disk Health report to work so we can see if there is any physical damage or if it is only logical damage (corruption).

Try this.

Turn off the computer and disconnect the drive.

Turn on the computer and boot into PartedMagic

After PartedMagic is fully loaded, connect the drive

Wait a few moments for it to be detected.

Double click the DISK HEALTH icon.

Double click the external drive.

Click VIEW OUTPUT and post the results here.

Let us know if you have any problems or questions.

James

Hey James, I tried the disk health again but still did not work.

By the way, when I run the cursor through the hard drive icon, there are details and it says this:

Device:/dev/sdb(scsi)
SMART Status: unsupported
Automatic offline data collection status: unsupported

Then When I try to double click the hard drive, this message popped up

Cannot retrieve SMART DATA, Device open failed, or device did not return identity device structure.

Then upon viewing the output, this was what was again shown:

scsi Mode Pageoffset: response length too short, resp len=4 offset=4 bd_len=0
>>terminate command early due to bad response to IEC mode page
A mandatory SMART command failed exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options

Also I failed to mention that my hard drive is running on a different sata enclosure because the old sata was broken and I had to replace it, I don't know if this is of relevance but hope this gives you better ideas.

Yep, that's the next step. In situations like this, sometimes, external drives connect better with Plug and Play (connecting it after booting) than with BIOS (booting with it connected). So we checked that first and it did not work.

A couple more questions :)

Is there any way that you can remove it from the enclosure and connect it directly to a computer's motherboard?

What is the manufacturer/model of the hard drive (not the enclosure but the drive inside)?

James

Hi James, I can't actually connect it to a computer's motherboard since I do not have one available unfortunately.

The drive is an external seagate 1TB freeplay expansion deskt USB 2.0

That enclosure that you are using appears to be preventing us from taking a close look at the drive. Do you have any other adapters or enclosures that you can try?

Everything we have tried sees the enclosure but not the drive inside of it. Even TestDisk sees it as...

IT-CEO USB2.0SATADevice

Instead of

SEAGATE FREEAGENT EXPANSION

Do you know if that enclosure is the F-8 model with USB 3.0 support?

Here is a brief explanation of what I think about the drive...

The file problems appear to be something that would be fixed by running chkdsk in Windows.

To be able to run chkdsk, we need Windows to see it as an NTFS partition (it sees it as RAW or not at all)

We can probably use TestDisk to determine what the problem is and maybe fix it so Windows can see it as NTFS but first we need to rule out physical damage and we aren't able to do that since we can't see the SMART data from the DISK HEALTH program.

I'm not sure that the enclosure is part of our problem but I do think it is likely.

Hi James, the enclosure is not an F-8 model and it can only support up to usb 2.0

I'm at a tails end here since I do not have a spare enclosure to attach the drive to... Is there another way or should I go look for an enclosure and buy one?

We can try to see if TestDisk can repair it enough to be seen properly by Windows and then Windows will automatically ask you to scan it and fix errors. However, if there is physical damage, this approach may be risky. The safer approach would be to make an image to another drive with at least 1.1GB of free space or try a paid software solution to recover the remaining files.

If you'd like to try the TestDisk fix, here are the instructions to get started.

Boot into PartedMagic with the bad drive connected.
Open the Terminal window (the icon that looks like a monitor in the lower left by the Mount Devices icon) and type
testdisk
and press enter

Select CREATE and press enter (this will create the file testdisk.log in the root folder which is a folder stored in the computer's RAM so it is erased when the computer is shutdown).
You should now see a list of drives including your bad drive.
If you have any difficulty identifying which one it is, let us know what you see and we'll help you figure it out.
Select the bad drive and choose Proceed and hit enter
It should automatically have Intel or EFI GPT selected (if not, select Intel and let me know) hit enter
Select Analyse and hit enter
Select Quick Search and hit enter
Say 'Y' if it asks if the disk was made in Vista/Win7 (even if it was made in XP say 'yes')

If you see what looks like a normal partition, highlight it and press
p
and see if you can see your files and folders there.
If there is more than one partition check each one for files and folders by getting back to the list of partitions found (pressing q), highlighting the next one and pressing p again.

If you can see your files and folders and it all looks normal then stop here and go down to the section below called POST TESTDISK.LOG

If anything does not look correct then continue on to the DEEPER SEARCH. Get to the screen showing the partitions that it found and press ENTER to coninue.
DEEPER SEARCH is an option at the bottom of the screen.
Highlight it and press ENTER

After the DEEPER SEARCH finishes do the same thing with pressing p to see if you can see your files and folders in any of the partitions found and then press
q
a bunch of times to get out of TestDisk.

POST TESTDISK.LOG

On the PartedMagic desktop, double-click the File Manager icon.
In the left pane, you should see a folder called

root

Locate the testdisk.log file in that folder
Double-click it to open it.
Select all of the text in it and paste that text in your reply for us to look at.
Hopefully, you can open Firefox in PartedMagic and login here and reply. There is a wireless network connection icon in the lower right (by the clock) of the PartedMagic desktop if you need to connect to a wireless network.

If you can not get an internet connection from PartedMagic, you will need to mount the internal drive or a flash drive and copy the testdisk.log file from the root folder to it. Then you can get it to us via posting from Windows (Let us know if you need directions for doing this).

If anything looks different than I described or you have any questions/problems, stop and ask.

James

Oky I will try these steps and let you now, by the way when I try to connect the drive to windows, and a format message popsup it sometimes makes a beeping sound, Is that a manifestation of physical damage? or it just happens sometimes?

If the disk drive is making a beeping sound then yes that is a bad sign and you should not proceed with TestDisk. If the computer makes the beep sound then no, that is not a problem.

A beeping hard drive is actually not a beep but the sound of parts rubbing together that should not be rubbing together.

Oh then what should I do now? since it is the harddrive that makes that beeping sound. Should we do the copy an image? I do have a brand new hard drive with 2TB capacity. Will the process affect the files in my other drive if we try to do the imaging?
