Hello,

I recently had to format my PC and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP. A few days afterwards, my PC started freezing up at random times, forcing me to turn it off/on manually. Can someone please help?

Here's what I'm running:

Windows XP Media Center Edition v. 2002
Service Pack 3

Thanks

Hello and Welcome -
Is the install that you did with the Original Install CD that came with your computer (Windows XP Media Center) or another version (Home / Pro) ??
Did you then go to Windows updates and install All of the Updates that you need (including SP3) ??
Have you since installed an Antivirus program ? What program ?

Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE or HERE, and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Thank You -

Yes. I used the installation discs that HP provided when I purchased the system several years ago.

I installed SP 3 and a few other updates from Windows Update. I am using Malwarebytes Pro as my AV.

I installed SP 3 and a few other updates from Windows Update. I am using Malwarebytes Pro as my AV.

Hi -
There should have been very many Windows Updates for you to download, so please revisit the site and recheck for more -

Are you aware that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (even the Pro version) is NOT an active Antivirus program, but just an AntiMalware program ??
There are several good Free Antivirus programs that will run very well alongside Malwarebytes Anti-Malware -

The following 3 Free Antivirus programs are noted as working well wilt Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program, and you need to install one now.

Microsoft Security Essentials
axast ! Free Antivirus
Avira Free Antivirus

You should also now make sure that Windows Firewall is Activated -

From the report, you should run Defrag Program very soon, and also run the DiskCleanup program, both in Accessories > System Tools -

After doing the above listed items, can you please run this program as you have not installed an Antivirus yet -
Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Disable your antivirus program - Information on A/V control (temp disable) HERE if needed
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
Click Start
Accept any security warnings from your browser.
Check Scan archives
Click Start
ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take Quite some time.
When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If ESET doesn't find any threats it will NOT produce any log.

This is needed to check for all Virus and not just General Malware infections -

Thank You -

Okay, I did everything you mentioned in your reply. I installed Microsoft Security Essentials as my AV and activated Windows Firewall, I updated Windows through Windows Update with all of the files I was recommended, I did a Defrag and DiskCleanUp on my main drive and my external (just in case), and I ran ESET, which did not find anything.

What else do I need to do?

Well...I don't see anything jumping out as a problem which is not related to your printer.

You seem to have problems with your Epson/Samsung printer drivers/software...I would uninstall such, run the system for awhile without such...and see if the freezes continue.

Other obvious possibilities are malware and/or hard drive problems. I can't say that there is evidence of either, but that's beyond my knowledge level.

Let's go back to your original post. Just what happened that you determined that you needed to reformat and clean install Windows? What circumstances led to your decision...and why did you think that a reinstall would eliminate the problems?

Louis

Well, the type of work I do sometimes leads me to visit suspicious websites and unfortunately it was my unlucky day. I got a virus that basically shut me down and even caused me problems when trying to access SafeMode. After trying numerous things and spending lots of time trying alternatives, I finally gave up because I couldn't afford to waste more time not working.

There is one thing that sticks out, but it also happened prior to me reformatting...my computer won't restart normally. If I try restarting, it will make it to the initial HP splash/BIOS menu screen, but gets stuck there. Every time I need to restart my machine for whatever reason, I have to click on 'Restart later', then turn off the PC, wait a few seconds, and then restart it manually. I don't know if that has anything to do with anything, but it's always bugged me.

Another thing that happened -- which didn't give me problems before -- was installing a program I normally use called Box Sync for Windows, which is simply a program that logs me into my Box account and syncs with my local folder. Every time I try running the installation program, I get the following error: 'Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application'. I checked and I have the latest MS NET 4.0 installed, but I still haven't been able to install this program, which I use a lot.

I think we should move this topic to the Internal Hardware forum where the more knwoledgeable can assess your SMART data reflected for the hard drive.

I also ran a full scan of my drives with Malwarebytes and another with their rookit detection software. Nothing turned up.
