Hello I have 2Gb running on a DELL E520, I recently bought another 2x1Gb RAM for the vacant slots. I placed the RAM in the slots and switched on the machine but the screen did not come on so I took it out switched on the computer and it work fine. So I took out the original RAM and replaceed with new the RAM and switched on the Computer and it began to beep continously.

Has anyone any idea what could be wrong, I did notice a label on the RAM which say "PROPERMAC - DO NOT REMOVE". Would it be possible this RAM is for a MAC, or does it make no difference at all?

P.S. The manufacture label and part no. are exactly the same as what is already running in my machine.

Help

What kind of ram did you purchase? According to the Dell service manual, you can put up to a total of 4GB of ram and the type of ram you can put is DDR2 800 or lower in 1GB or 512mb or 256mb configuration.

Hi,

The Symptoms you describe, continuous beeping, are what is seen with either defective or incompatible memory. You need to talk to the vendor about an exchange for the memory.

Good Luck

Hi,

I got replacement RAM no problem, however I installed into the E520 and and all seems well the BIOS is reporting 4GB RAM all seems ok until windows XP starts and in reporting 3GB of RAM so I started PC TuneUp from AVG and it also is reporting 3GB of RAM, could someone point me in the right direction as to why this is happening or is it a windows bug but is still using 4gb?

Help please if you can.

3Gb is the usable memory that you can see with XP 32 bit. That is the most common type. A 64 bit Windows would use the entire 4Gb. 64Bit XP was rare and driver support was lacking.

To put it another way the BIOS is detecting and reporting on what amount of memory it sees. Windows is reporting the Amount of Memory it can use.

And before you ask, 4Gb is the maximum a 32bit Operating System can address, But windows uses a lot of it, in You case 1Gb for its own use. It could be worse.

Many thanks again.

I sort of do understand. If I upgraded to Windows 7 from XP would it make my PC any faster and would I get any benefits from it Win7. XP seems quite good on this Dual Core I'm not sure upgrading the OS or even a new PC would make any difference to me as I only do internet surfing and not much down loading and no gaming.

Hi,

1. It would only help use all of your memory if you bought the 64bit version of Windows 7 or 8
2. Faster? Maybe.
3. 3Gb is more than enough for XP

You would end up with a clean install of Windows 7 or 8 and would have to setup up all the non windows programs and configure your email unless you use webmail.

I probably wouldn't unless it is due for a windows reload anyway.

Good Luck
Roger
