Instructed to post logs here by Boopme.

Hello

I'm posting this topic on behalf of my mother as its her laptop that has the problem,basically the other day she noticed that some strange programs had been allowed full trusted network access through Kasperskys firewall which my mother didn't allow now i would usually tell you what the programs are called but there in Chinese/Japanese writing and don't have any logo/icon. I've asked her if she has recently installed any new software or programs which she says she hasn't and upon looking at her laptop i can confirm she hasn't. Also the laptop is running very slow/laggy it takes about 10mins maybe more for it to fully load up once you have logged in if you try to do anything like open a program etc before then the system just hangs and lags for ages and the hard drive sounds like its constantly in use and the light is always flashing on and off even when there is no programs running on the machine.

I have run MBAM which found nothing i also ran aswMBR which did find a suspicious file but after it found it the program froze and i wasn't able to do anything with it apart from save the log ;) so if you want to have a look at the log let me know and i shall upload it,after aswMBR froze i managed to close it and run TDSS killer but that didn't find anything i also tried hitman pro but that just found tracking cookies. I also have a screen shot of the strange programs that have been allowed access so yet again if you would like to see that just ask. The laptop is running Windows Vista 32-bit with 4GB of RAM.

Thanks in advance
Jay

Kaspersky PURE
Antivirus out of date! (On Access scanning disabled!)

Please take care of this immediately.
===

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Be careful not to install malware posing as Java update!
Important read this blog.
http://blog.trendmicro.com/trendlabs-security-intelligence/malware-poses-as-an-update-for-java-0-day-fix/

Quoted from the page.
"In light of the recent events surrounding Java, users must seriously consider their use of Java. Do they really need it? If yes, make sure that users follow the steps we recommended and get the security update directly from the official oracle website." at:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

How to disable Java in your browsers
http://www.infoworld.com/t/web-browsers/how-disable-java-in-your-browsers-210882

You can manually check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java 7 Update 11

Java 7 update 10 introduced important new security controls
You can read about it here.
http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2012/12/19/java-7-update-10-introduces-important-new-security-controls/

Note
Java security update installs Ask Toolbar by default -- a single click in a multi-step installer.
http://www.benedelman.org/images/iac-jan13/ask-iac-011613-small.png
I suggest that your un-check the box "Install the Ask Toolbar" before proceeding.
===

Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Adobe Flash Player v11.3.300.264 and earlier versions... being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks...

Get the latest Flash Player

On the top of the page you will be given an opportunity to download the version for your operating system.
Make sure you select appropriate version.

You will also have an option to install the Free! McAfee Security Scan Plus Un-check the box if you are NOT using McAfee's virus protection software.

For the users of Internet Explorer download version 11.
Flash Player 11 (64 bit)
Flash Player 11 (32 bit)
===

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus - optional" this is not required if you are not a McAfee subscriber. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

===

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Everything that was found will be deleted.
  • Follow the prompts to reboot the computer. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt (n is a number)..

===

When all is well and for your Added security get Windows Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Vista
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=22166

===

Please let me know what problem persists with this computer.

Hi nasdaq

Yeah the only reason it says Kaspersky is out of date and disabled is because boopme advised me to take the computer off-line so the databases are out of date now and i disabled it to run combo fix but didn't re enable it after wards. My mother doesn't need Java so I'm going to uninstall it and disable it as its an awful piece of software that's so vulnerable and no body really needs it. But i will update the Abobe stuff and uninstall internet explorer too as she doesn't use that and i didn't even know it was still on there. I'll post the log for adw cleaner in my next reply.

You cannot remove Internet Explorer. It's needed however for the Microsoft Updates. I would just get the latest version for her security.

Remove the AdWare, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed on your computer.

Post the log and let me know what problem persists.

If all is well:

Time for some housekeeping

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall
===

To remove AdwCleaner.

Please double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Uninstall.
Confirm with Yes.

If you decide to keep the AdwCleaner tool make sure delete your version and download the latest before running it.

Delete the other tools we used.
You can Keep the DDS tool as most forum will ask to see a log before suggesting a fix.

Sorry i forgot to comment on how the computer was in the last post. It's still running slow bit that might be because it needs a defrag but more importantly the strange programs are still there in the trusted connections in Kaspersky. Did ComboFix find anything? It didn't look like it did from what i could see in the log but then again I'm no pro.

What are the strange programs?
Can you list them?

ComboFix did not remove any malware or bad programs.

I do not think I can do very much with an image.

The only suggestion I have is to remove Kaspersky using the Add/Remove Programs list and reinstall it.
