I was referred to this forum by one of your Malware forum advisors, Clairvoyant. We have removed a bunch of malware from my computer and are now finished with that. However, Clairvoyant stated the following in his final post:

"Now you have at least two problem on your OS, so I advice you to open a new topic in the devoted section on BC. Surely there you will find someone who will help you in the best way.:)
You may link this topic in the new one, some of our logs may be useful to your helper."

Here is a link to Clairvoyant's post:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic477827.html/page__view__findpost__p__2955952

I do not know what these problems are so I followed his advice and came here for help. Thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can provide.

Have you tried the MS FixIt, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 ?

Sorry for the slow reply. For some unknown reason I did not get an email notice that there was a response to my post.

I just ran MS FixIt. I think it indicated that it had fixed one problem. When it was done I re-booted my machine just to make sure any changes were completed. Unfortunately, I still have the little yellow shield in the system tray indicating there is an update to be installed. When I try to install that update, I still get the message that it could not be installed and displays the following message:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2742597)

My helper in the malware forum, Clairvoyant, indicated that there were at least two issues with my OS that needed to be fixed. I don't know if FixIt addressed either of these or not but apparently I still have some issues. What else should I do ?

I tried the solution offered by narenxp and that appears to have worked just fine to resolve the issue with the KB2742597 Security Update. Thank you very much for that.

Now, referring back to my original post... my helper on the malware forum, Clairvoyant, indicated that there were at least 2 problems with my OS. I have fixed a couple of issues but I don't know that I have fixed either of the two Clairvoyant was referring to (because he did not specify what these problems were). Is there any way to test my machine to see if there are any other unresolved OS problems?

Also, there are still some odd things going on with my machine. For example, when I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete this should bring up a program that will allow me to shut down the computer, enter the Task Manager, and a few other things I don't remember. When I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete on my machine, it bypasses the initial screen (where you can select Task Manager from among several options). Instead, Ctrl+Alt+Delete goes straight to Task Manager and, within Task Manager, there should be 4 tabs (Applications, Processes, Performance, and Networking). All I get is the Processes list. No other tabs are displayed.

Here is another oddity... every once in a while, the computer will "pop". What I mean by this is something apparently triggers a sound file that makes a "pop" noise. I figure this is software doing this because the sound comes from my speakers. It is NOT a mechanical sound coming from the CPU.

Double click on one of the edges of task manager.Tabs should get restored.

Clairvoyant was referring to performance issues and windows update issue.

Double click restored tabs in Task Manager. Thanks, that NEVER would have occurred to me.

So... we have fixed the update problem and the Task Manager issue. How do I go about assessing and, if necessary, improving the performance issues?

Please download MINITOOLBOX and run it.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/MiniToolBox.exe

Checkmark following boxes:

Flush DNS
Reset FF proxy Settings
Reset Ie Proxy Settings
Report IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
List Devices (problems only)

Click Go and post the result.

Download Autoruns and Autorunsc
http://download.sysinternals.com/files/Autoruns.zip
Unzip it to your desktop and then double click autoruns.exe After the scan is finished then click on File>>>>>>>>>>>Save The default name will be autoruns.arn make sure to save it as Autoruns.txt under the file type option. in other words make sure it is a .txt file instead of .arn Attach the text in your next reply.

This is not going well. I tried to uninstall LightScribe. I had to search for it because it didn't show up in the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs but I finally found the program under C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe. There was an installer module in that folder so I ran that. It had a "Remove" option but, although it appeared to run the uninstall, I found that nothing had been removed. I don't think I want to uninstall LightScribe anyway. My computer is an HP Media Center PC which can create custom CD labels right on the CD read/write drive. LightScribe is the software that creates these labels.

I also tried to run the McAfee Removal Tool. When it was done, it displayed the following message:

"Incomplete Uninstallation. Error obtaining full permissions for cleanup. See log files for more details."

I tried to put the contents of the log file in this post but I got the following error message: "Your post was too long. Please go back and shorten it a little." I tried to attach the log file but bleepingcomputer says the file is too big to upload. I will try breaking it into smaller pieces and putting them in separate posts.

Here, I hope, is the first part:

NOPE! Still too big. Do you need to see the log file? If so, I guess I will have to break it up into a bunch of small pieces so the forum will accept it. Let me know what you want me to do. Thanks.

Log looks good you can right click and select delete for the registry items to be removed.

X "McDefragTask.job" "" "" "File not found: c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee\mqc\QcConsol.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\defrag.exe" C: -f"
X "McQcTask.job" "" "" "File not found: c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee\mqc\QcConsol.exe 14 0"

Any current issues?

Yes, there are a few issues.

1.  On February 4 you posted a list of things I should do.  The first item was to remove LightScribe.  I decided to keep that.  The second item on the list was to run the McAfee Removal Tool.  I got error messages when I tried to do that.  I did not attempt to do any of the other things on that list.  Should I go back and do the rest of those things?

2.  Sometimes my web browser (Firefox) will display messages like this:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://wrc/content/libs/jquery-1.5.2.js:402

Here are a couple of other script references that have been displayed:

Script: resource://gre/modules/XPCOMUtils.jsm:327
Script: resource://gre/modules/XPCOMUtils.jsm:329

What is going on with here?  Is this a problem that needs to be addressed?

3.  On the malware forum, my helper suggested I should have more RAM on my machine.  Where would I get that?  Is that something I can install myself?
