Good day,

I hope this is the right forum for this...

My computer runs between 50-99% CPU usage at all times. I suspect this may be malware, but need your expertise to determine the root cause. The fan runs really loud and now seems to be affecting another computer in my house connected to the same network. In task manager Processes, svchost.exe (C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs) takes up 640,000K of memory.

Please let me know what steps I need to take next. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

I need more information before suggesting any remedial acction.

Please download and run this DDS Scanning Tool. Nothing will be deleted. It will just give me some additional information about your system.

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr <- not recommended if you use Chrome to download this .scr file. Use the other options.
    • DDS.pif
    • DDS.COM
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.

Please just paste the contents of the DDS.txt log in your next post. DO NOT attach the log.
===

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Search for AdWare, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed on your computer.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Search.
  • A log file will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt (n is a number).

Please post the logs and wait for my instructions.

Remove the AdWare, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed on your computer.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Everything that was found will be deleted.
  • Follow the prompts to reboot the computer. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt (n is a number)..

NOTE
If you get a message that you must reboot the computer before starting deletion, please do. At reboot, only AdwCleaner will run and you can only click on the "Delete" button.
When the deletion is done, AdwCleaner will reboot again the computer and open the logfile.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.
==============

We will deal with the Updates later.

When we are done with my laptop, I will post results for my desktop.

I do not deal with two computers on the same topic.
Please start a new topic for your Desktop computer.
Run the same programs I suggested in my post No. 2 and post the logs.
When done paste the link in your next reply. I will expedite the matter.

I am still in the process of trying to run Combo Fix. My laptop either overheats and shuts down or get the dreaded blue screen before combo fix is finished running.

I will post a new topic in regards to my desktop computer later today.

I am thinking of just reinstalling Windows 7 on my laptop, would you recommend this?

I am thinking of just reinstalling Windows 7 on my laptop, would you recommend this?

Do you still have that many difficulties with this computer?

If you do you should first try this.

Restore - Last Good Configuration.
http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows-vista/Using-Last-Known-Good-Configuration

Do not reinstall Windows just yet. Let me know what problems persists.
<<<>>>

The ComboFix log is clean.

As for your other topic fireman4it is serving you.
That was quick.

I rebooted with Last Known Good Configuration, but it seems the problem still exists. During Combo Fix, a Rootkit was found in tcp/ip. Combo fix required a restart but the only way I could get it to complete was if I booted in safe mode after restart. I dont know if this had an affect on anything. I have attached a screen shot of the CPU usage caused by svchost.exe (netsrvs)

Please download RogueKiller© by Tigzy from one of the links below and save it to your desktop.

Link 1 Bleepingcomputer
Link 2 RogueKiller (par Tigzy)

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.
For Vista or Windows 7, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Click Scan to scan the system.
When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

It looks like only your TCP/IP stack is corrupted. Not ZeroAccess infection found.

Run the Fix it option on this Microsoft page.

How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

Restar the Computer after the fix.

Keep me posted.

Ran the fix and restarted. CPU usage is still running high. It now runs between 70-99%.
