Hello,

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1525 that I got from a friend that wasn`t working. When I tried to boot up, I got a windows error that said `windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might have been the cause`. I tried the Repair computer tab with the Dell CD, and was still not abe to get it to work. I finally decided that the best way to go about it would just be to reformat the machine and reinstall the OS. I have the Dell disc, but still got an error at the end of the Windows (vista) install the said that Windows could not complete installation due to the hardware on this machine.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Thanks so much!

Can you run the Dell diagnostic test for the hard drive? http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1525/en/SG/Y465HA01MR.pdf
When the Dell logo appears, press F12 and select Diagnostics. See if the hard drive passes or fails with running the short or long test.

The drive seems to have failed. Try another good working compatible drive and reinstall again using the Dell disc.
