My son visits game forums and is always getting us infected with things, but Malwarebytes normally catches and cleans them up, or so I thought. The computer has recently been freezing, doing periodic memory dumps and not running Malwarebytes to completion. I figured I had a problem when I got a security warning a few days ago about being infected with something. I thought it was one of those fake notices, so I didn't click on it, and tried to fire up Malwarebytes to check it out. No luck. I have tried various tutorials on how to fix it and have run several tools including combofix (yes, I know now that I shouldn't have - sorry), but I still keep coming up empty other than some random adware that one of the tools caught and got rid of. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials, tried running scans in safe mode, nothing seems to help. I can still boot up and use the computer, but I have the suspicion that something is still lurking and would feel better if I could rule out a virus or rootkit problem. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks in advance.

Here's my log:

Hi Nasdaq,

I was just able to run a Malwarebytes quick scan to completion which I hadn't been able to do outside of safe mode before and it didn't pick anything up. I am currently running a full scan to be sure, but so far, so good. When I ran the Combofix, it indicated that there was an infection involving system32\drivers\atapi.sys so I'm assuming that's where the problem was, and that Combofix corrected it?

Based on my logs, is there anything else I should install/update on my computer to make sure things are good and that I avoid these problems in the future?

Thanks again for your help!!!

If all is well:

Time for some housekeeping

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall
===

To remove AdwCleaner.

Please double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Uninstall.
Confirm with Yes.

If you decide to keep the AdwCleaner tool make sure delete your version and download the latest before running it.

Delete the other tools we used.
You can Keep the DDS tool as most forum will ask to see a log before suggesting a fix.
===

Have a look at these recommendations.

Hi Nasdaq,

I spoke too soon, when I tried to run a Malwarebytes full scan, it stopped a few minutes in and rebooted my computer. I uninstalled Malwarebytes, and redownloaded and installed it again from bleepingcomputer. The same thing happened with the new version, stopping a few minutes into the scan and rebooting the computer. I'm worried that I'm still infected with something even though all my other applications seem to work. Malwarebytes always used to work wonderfully! I'm afraid to do any online banking or shopping for fear of whatever is infecting my computer collecting my passwords and such. What should I do now (besides kicking my teenage son off the internet since I'm pretty sure his surfing habits are the cause of this).

Thanks :)

http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/index.php?/topic/131575-roguekiller/page__pid__757504__st__0&#entry757504

Please download RogueKiller© by Tigzy from one of the links below and save it to your desktop.

Link 1 Bleepingcomputer
Link 2 RogueKiller (par Tigzy)

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.
For Vista or Windows 7, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Click Scan to scan the system.
When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

[RUN][BLACKLISTDLL] HKLM\[...]\Run : drkly16j (rundll32.exe drkly16j.dll,ServiceCheck) -> FOUND
This is for KidsWatch_Time_Control parental control software
Leave it alone is still wanting this protection.

If on the other hand you wish to remove it I suggest you delete it using the Add/Remove programs list.

Keep in mind that for some reason this tool may be blocking MBAM, it you have a way to just disable it, do it and see if you can run MBAM.
===

Run RogueKiller again and click Scan
When the scan completes > click on the Registry tab
Put a check next to all of these item below and uncheck the rest: (if found)

[HJPOL] HKLM\[...]\System : DisableRegistryTools (0) -> FOUND

Now click Delete on the right hand column under Options

Please run the RKiller tool and post a fresh Log.

Looking good.

If MBAM is still not completing go to this page.

http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=103844

If you have the license do as they suggest.

If still no joy then start a topic in their forum. They should be able to guide you.

It ran all the way through on safe mode, but still not in regular mode. I will hop over to the malwarebytes forum to see if it is some sort of conflict with another program. Thanks for all your help, Nasdaq :)
