Hi:

I don’t know what virus or rootkit etc. is on this computer but believe that something is…

I recently (last week) http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic481342.html
posted about issues with my Malwarebytes malicious website blocking not working on and off and also having troubles downloading updates for Norton 360.

I was thinking that I still have some leftover virus issues on my computer from the last time I asked for help last December (2012). See link below.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic479098.html/page__p__2926269__fromsearch__1#entry2926269

As I explained previously, I am having trouble with my malwarebyte’s malicious website blocking being disabled and updating Norton 360. It’s not something that is happening 24/7 but the fact that it is happening at all concerns me. I would open Malwarebytes and try to click on the "malicious website blocking" box but was unable to do so and with Norton 360 the thingy would just spin and spin saying it was downloading the updates and it obviously wasn’t so I ended up downloading the updates manually.

Tonight (1/14/2013) I've just turned on my computer and the following screen was open.
c:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe.

I restarted the computer and the same thing occurs.

I did a search on the net about a cause for this and they said that happens if you've just done an update for a driver for a piece of software. The only updates I've done are Microsoft automatic updates and I don't recall seeing anything about drivers.

The advice was this Click on Start-Run, type: msconfig, then click on OK. When the System Configuration Tool loads, click on the "Startup" tab, then see if " c:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe" is listed there.. If so, UNCHECK the box next to it, click on "Apply", then restart the machine. Upon restart place a CHECK mark in the box to NOT run System Configuration Tool at startup.Or you could simply open the registry editor and check for the listing at either the locations below. If so, delete the line indicating such:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

or

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
.

DDS.txt Log

I did type msconfig but did NOT see c:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe listed in the startup tab. I didn’t bother attempting to go into the registry because I don’t want to screw things up any more than they are now. :(

I am not sure why all this is happening but I believe that “something” is still on this computer and if I’m right I want that dang virus gone! :ranting:

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi:

This is an update about what's happening.

I just had to restart my computer after some Microsoft updates and once again malwarebytes website blocking is disabled. :(

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/481784 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Close any open browsers, and all other programs working. Make sure you save your file if working on a document.
  • Do not install any other programs until this if fixed.[/b]
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

No malware was found on your logs.

I suspect that the CMD windows that opens at statup comes from this empty registry key.

Notify: RailNotification - <no file>

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

If your operating system is 64 bit download this tool:
SystemLook_x64.exe
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy and paste the content of the following bold text into the main textfield:

    :reg
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon /sub

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

===

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus - optional" this is not required if you are not a McAfee subscriber. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Everything that was found will be deleted.
  • Follow the prompts to reboot the computer. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt (n is a number)..

Please post the logs for my review.

You didn't find anything??? Could it be a something that's hiding even from combofix etc.??? I just turned on my computer and my Spywareblaster was disabled which is strange as it was working perfectly when I turned off the computer last night.

Try this in the search box and post the log.

By search box do you mean the "Run" box or the "command prompt". I tried both and then figured you meant the SystemLook.exe.

Searching for "RailNotification"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\RailNotification]

Nothing is started by the registry key.

Lets just remove the registry key.

; Purpose: Remove traces in the registry.
;
; Instructions: Copy and paste this text IN BOLD into a text editor such as Notepad.
;
; Save this text as Fix.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop.

REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\RailNotification]

; Double-click on Fix.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

On a Vista or Windows 7 operating system, right click the Fix.reg and run as Administrator.

Delete the Fix.reg file when done.

Let me know if the problem persists.

Nasdaq:

Thank you.

You wrote

Questions:

1. What exactly does that mean.

2. What caused that to happen?

3. How do I tell if the issue is fixed??? Do I run systemlook.exe again???

1. What exactly does that mean.

The registry is a Database. The operaring system start some process when you boot the system.
The information is taken from the Database, all handled by the operaring system.

2. What caused that to happen?
Hard to tell, unable to find.

3. How do I tell if the issue is fixed??? Do I run systemlook.exe again???

If not getting the CMD.exe at startup it's fixed.

No, I'm not having more any issues at startup. The problem was an issue with my boot.ini file and I fixed that by editing the .ini file(found out how on the internet).

Could the problem be my fault by using CCleaner or TuneupUtilities???

Anyway...

Thanks for all your help it was much appreciated not to mention a relief knowing that I didn't have any nasty viruses on my computer.

I am getting help for the issue with malwarebytes on their forum. Thanks again for suggesting to do that. :thumbup2:
