Friend of the family asked me to take a look at their laptop. They seem to believe it has a virus and wasn't sure how to handle viruses. Upon taking a look at the laptop, I'm not so sure it's a virus (though it's possible). The laptop is running windows vista (I'm not hugely familiar with vista). I currently have it 'connected' to my wireless network and yet when I try to visit a webpage via IE or Firefox, it's telling me there is no internet connection. (I think the owner of the laptop uses dial up while I use cable so maybe it's a setting somewhere I'm missing?). I know it's not my network as I currently am using my desktop on the same network and it's fine and my aunt was just using her laptop without a problem and me on my ipod so it's not the wireless/router or modem. Using a jump drive, I ran 'clamwin' virus scan and it found nothing on the laptop.

I have also tried running windows network diagnostics for problems and it's returning that it didn't find any problems with the computer's network connection. Despite all of this, it DID appear to download and install windows updates. I've turned off the firewall thinking maybe it was blocking the network but still was unable to connect. Wireless IS turned on. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Can you connect by wired atleast through the laptop by your home network? Check Control Panel - Internet Options - Connection tab - Remove any Virtual and Dial up settings (should be grayed out) and on LAN settings, make sure Automatically detect settings is the only option checkmarked. Hit Apply.

Download MiniToolBox and select all options.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

Thank you for your quick response and sorry for the wait. I've been working the late shift at work so haven't had time to get back to this till now. I connected the laptop via wired and it's still not acknowledging it when I try to use a browser. Mousing over the connection icons it's saying it is connected but no luck actually visiting websites. I'm just being told the typical "Unable to connect. check computer's connection". (As a side note, again today when I have it 'connected' to the network, its detecting windows updates even though I had just 'installed' them the day I first posted this... so it IS getting SOME kind of connection I would think or it wouldn't be getting updates?) Used a jump drive to run the tool requested. The following is the log from said tool.

Check Control Panel - Internet Options - Connection tab - Remove any Virtual and Dial up settings (should be grayed out) and on LAN settings, make sure Automatically detect settings is the only option checkmarked. Hit Apply.

Try removing Norton Antivirus - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/norton-removal-tool/ then try browsing again.
Download free Malwarebytes and install then update to latest definition.
Perform a quick scan. When finish scanning, an MBAM log will appear. Copy/paste the report on your next reply.

Can you connect by wired atleast through the laptop by your home network? Check Control Panel - Internet Options - Connection tab - Remove any Virtual and Dial up settings (should be grayed out) and on LAN settings, make sure Automatically detect settings is the only option checkmarked. Hit Apply.

I had already done that and it hadn't changed. I checked it a second time just to make sure. I've removed Norton and it now IS letting me get to yahoo. (whoopie!) However, upon installing MBAM, it won't open the program. I click it and it does nothing. I also tried 'run as admin' with no different results.

Download a free good antivirus such as MSE. Choose Microsoft Vista/7 32 bit -> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/security-essentials-download
What is the error message when opening MBAM? Try downloading again from the given link. But check first in Add or remove programs if MBAM is installed. If installed, remove it first before reinstalling again.

I have installed Microsoft Security Essentials and re-installed MBAM (as instructed). I'm unable to actually open either one. There is no error message. I click to open them (par normal) and for a split second I get the little 'loading' icon on the mouse. Then that icon vanishes and it never does load. It acts like something is blocking the programs from running... or simply stopping the scripts all together before they start.

I've tried running them normal as well as right clicking and 'opening' the program and also running as admin with ultimately the same results all three ways. When I run as admin, I DO get the "User Account Control A program needs your permission to continue" box but upon clicking continue, it does the same as trying to run it. The little mouse loading icon, then nothing. Just to make sure it wasn't ninja running, I opened task manage and checked processes and neither are listed there either. It appears I CAN run other programs.. but the 'security' ones we've installed thus far... seem to be being 'blocked' for lack of better terms. (I had noticed this with Norton too but I had thought it was Norton being Norton as I've never seen it work like it's supposed to anyway.)

The owner of the laptop in this thread needed their laptop back. I've returned it to them with directions to this thread and instructions to create an account here and post on this thread. The Antivirus and MBAM are STILL not opening and seem to be shut down by something else before they start. From here I'll let them take it. Thank you very much for your help already. You guys are always amazing.
