Hi experts,

I originally posted in the Malware subforum and thanks to Farbar have ruled out a malware issue:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic479490.html

But I still keep getting blue screens. I just had my 2nd one this week. They happen it random times.
Today I had only had the computer on for less than 5 minutes and was transferring a file into another folder.
Computer is also randomly lagging and very slow with 100% or very high cpu and gets very hot. If I close all browser windows or programs it usually corrects itself within 5 minutes, sometimes I have to restart the computer. However, other times I can be on it for 5+ hours and it is fine.

I have been unable to locate the memory.dmp file in the windows directory once I reboot.

Heres the latest message when my computer restarted:

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time,
Mak.

Have had two more BSOD since my original post a few hours ago.
I was just online reading some articles when they happened...
One was within 5 mins of the laptop being on and then next after about 1/2 hour.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317818 , uninstall the touchpad drivers via Device Manager...then reboot, they will reinstall automatically. May be currently damaged.

Uninstall/reinstall Comodo, possibly damaged.

Run the chkdsk /r command...let us know how the system performs afterwards.

Hey Louis,

Sorry for the late reply, have been away so haven't had my laptop on me.
Have uninstalled and reinstalled Comodo as well as the drivers.
This has made no difference. Still getting lots of Blue Screens, have had about 5 today!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot,
Mak.

Hello this is mak,

If you are interested, I would like to have a look at some different data to see if we can find a solution to your BSODs.

1.) Please follow this link: BSOD Posting Instructions Windows 8 - Windows 7 - Vista.
  • Follow all instructions with the exception of:
    • Create a new thread HERE and attach the file(s) after step 4
  • Note: Both files of Step 1 need to be in the Documents folder.
2.) Next, Upload the zipped folder to a File Sharing website of your choosing because Bleeping Computer has a 512 K only upload limit and this file will be much larger.

Regards,
Brooks

Hello Mak,

Thank you for providing that information.  Unfortunately there were no minidump files collected even though your computer is properly set to produce minidump files. The events log lists multiple blue screens going back 5-6 months.

1.)  I see that you have CCleaner installed.  Please open CCleaner and under System, Uncheck Minidumps.   I suspect, it has been deleting them.  Please refrain from running any other cleaners for the time being as well.

2.)  Please navigate to the the Windows folder.

  • C:\Windows\ <==  this folder.
  • Find the C:\Windows\Memory.dmp file
  • Right mouse click on the memory.dmp file -> Send to -> Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • A Compressed (zipped) folder will appear in the C:\Windows folder.
  • Note: If you receive an access denied message or have trouble zipping the ".dmp" file, create a new folder on your Desktop (suggestion: Memdump), then copy and paste the memory.dmp file into that Desktop folder, then compress the folder.

Please upload the zipped Memory dump to File Dropper and provide a link in your next post.

3.)  Your computer is running more than one anti-virus program.

  • Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer.
  • Having two or more anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run slowly, become unstable and in rare cases, crash.
  • Please uninstall one of the following:

avast! Free Antivirus (Version: 7.0.1474.0)

COMODO Internet Security (Version: 4.1.19277.920)

My suggestion is that you uninstall COMODO Internet Security as it has a history of causing "high CPU usauge."

Regards,
Brooks

Hi Brooks,

Have changed the setting in CCleaner to not delete minidump files.

I have searched C drive and C:/Windows and I can't find the memory.dmp file.

There have been more blue screens since I last ran CCleaner so not sure why I can't find the file.

There is a folder in C:/Windows called Minidump with 2 .dmp files in it called 021013-26847-01 & 021413-20170-01.

Are they of any help?

With Comodo, I was advised to reinstall it earlier and when I did I couldn't find the stand alone Comdo Firewall.

The new version was called Comodo Internet Security and once installed it had an option to run Comodo Internet Security, Proactive Security or Firewall security. I am currently running Proactive Security. As I am not running Internet Security do you think this is still conflicting with Avast? Should I be running Firewall Security or using a different program all together for a Firewall?

Thanks a lot,

Mak.

Hello,

While you are still experiencing blue screens, my suggestion is to completely uninstall Comodo.

COMODO - Proactive Security - "This configuration turns CIS into the ultimate protection machine. All possible protections are activated and all critical COM interfaces and files are protected. During the setup, if only Comodo Firewall installation option is selected, the next screen allows users to select this configuration as default CIS configuration. If selected, Firewall is always set to Safe mode. But according to the malware scanning results performed during the setup process, if no malware is found, Defense+ is set to Clean PC mode. Otherwise, the default is Safe mode."

Yes, I would like to examine those two minidump files:  C:\Windows\Minidump.   If you could zip them up in a folder and attach with your next post.

Thank you

Regards,
Brooks

Hi Brooks,

Here you go: http://www.filedropper.com/minidump

I have uninstalled comodo. Should I be looking for a new firewall for now?

Thanks,

Mak.

Hi Mak,

I have uninstalled comodo. Should I be looking for a new firewall for now?

For now, go into Control Panel -> Action Center -> Security and make sure that the Windows firewall is active.  When the computer is now longer blue screening you may install any firewall you wish.

Both minidumps were STOP 0x00000124
STOP 0x00000124: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR
Usual causesHardware, Incompatibility, May be driver corruption

Both blame Intel processor (Proc 0 Bank 5)
Section 2     : x86/x64 MCA
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Descriptor    @ fffffa8007113138
Section       @ fffffa80071132c0
Offset        : 664
Length        : 264
Flags         : 0x00000000
Severity      : Fatal

Error         : Internal unclassified (Proc 0 Bank 5)
  Status      : 0xba00000000400405

STOP 0x00000124 errors point to hardware and in this case the processor.  Intel processors are infrequently the real problem (but it can happen).  The first challenge is to identify any drivers, BIOS issues, or other software that may be "acting up" and causing the processor "distress."  If that's unsuccessful, then all hardware components should be stress tested for failure.

Please read: Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try by H2SO4.
  • Start by following steps 1 - 5.
  • Use either HP Support on your notebook or go to the HP website and make sure that all drivers and BIOS is updated to the must current version.

These third party drivers were found in the raw stack of the most recent dump files:

fffff880`08750238  fffff880`0450da77Unable to load image aswSnx.SYS, Win32 error 0n2

fffff880`08c49088  fffff880`04fa9a48Unable to load image igdpmd64.sys, Win32 error 0n2

fffff880`08c490d8  fffff880`012305c3Unable to load image iaStor.sys, Win32 error 0n2

fffff880`08c4af08  fffff880`00fb975eUnable to load image atikmpag.sys, Win32 error 0n2

aswSnx.SYS - Avast Anti-virus
  • I know you have already removed Comodo, but at this point I would recommend removing Avast as well and replacing it with Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).  MSE is known for it's system stability. This would help in narrowing down conflicts until the blue screen issue can be rectified

atikmpag.sys - is your graphics driver
igdpmd64.sys - is the Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows 7
iaStor.sys - is the Intel® Matrix Storage Manager

These should be updated, if possible, through HP.

Hi Brooks,

Windows firewall is now active, Avast has been uninstalled and MSE is running.

I have followed steps 1 to 5. All drivers were up to date and so was the BIOS so nothing could be updated.

For reference have uploaded the 7 newest minidump files to: http://www.filedropper.com/minidump_2

Thanks a lot,

Mak

We'll move on to Hardware Testing.

    • Burn the "iso" file to create a bootable CD. (See Free Iso Burner)
    • Boot the computer from the CD.
    • Click Basic Tests from SeaTools top menu.
    • Run both Short and Long tests.
  • A Fail in either test indicates a failing hard drive.

2. )  Please perform a Check Disk.

  • Check both boxes:
  • Automatically fix file system errors.
  • Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

3. )  Using Event Viewer to view Check Disk results:

  • In the search box type "Event" and click on "Event Viewer" in top column.
  • Click on "Windows Logs" -->"Application."
  • Click the "Source" tab ( top, right) to alphabetize that column.
  • Arrow down to "Wininit." It will be an Event ID: 1001.
  • Select the most recent Check Disk report.
  • Double click on it and select the "Copy" button. This will copy the report to the clipboard.
  • Please paste this report into your next post.

4. )   Please run System File Checker to check for and replace missing or corrupted system files.

  • Click Start  vista-7-start-2.png and type: CMD in the search box.
  • Right mouse click the cmd.exe at the top of the column and select, Run as administrator.
  • Type: SFC /Scannow
  • The scan may take 10-15 minutes to complete.
  • If upon completion, "No integrety violations were found", then please exit the DOS box and restart the computer.
  • If "integrety violations were found", please reboot the computer and run the SFC/Scannow command once again.
  • Repeat up to 3 times with a restart after each run.
  • Please let us know the results.
