I am having a similar problem on my 6 year old HP Windows XP desktop computer. I had to do a system recovery because I started having problems not being able access "pay bill on line" web pages. So when I was not able to fix that issue I did a system recovery and I can now access all webpages, but Microsoft update will not update automatically or manually. On manual upload I get the error code 0x80240036. I went to Microsoft download center and downloaded Service pack 1, 2 and 3 and restarted after each download. After downloading service pack 3 and restarting, my computer would not reload to desk top.It just kept rebooting itself. So I went to safe mode and removed service pack 3 and it is acting normally.
Also after doing system recovery my AVG anti virus found 4 issues:
1.Trogan horse Generic 27.ATHL C:\System volume Inform
2. Virus found win 32/heur.dropper C:\System volume info
3. Trogan Horse Generic 27. ATHL C:\Program files\online services\Ea
4. virus found Win 32/heur.dropper C:\ Program files\HP Games\alien7
These issues were moved to the virus vault.
Can this computer be saved or should I start looking for a new one?

And moved to the Am I infected forum.
