I have a PC running Windows XP Pro (SP 3) with about 3 GHz CPU speed and about 2.5 GB RAM. It has the OS installed on a 500 GB hard drive made by Western Digital. It doesn't have any problems with its functionality.

However, I recently tested the hard drive for errors with WD's Lifeguard tool. This diagnostic tool could not run in quick mode nor repair what it found in extended mode.

The WD extended test completed in about an hour and produced this report, which doesn't tell me much:

Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WDC WD5001AALS-00E3A0
Unit Serial Number: WD-WCATR2850613
Firmware Number: 05.01D05
Capacity: 500.11 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 08-Error was detected while repairing bad sectors.
Test Time: 08:52:01, January 07, 2013

Is there anything else I can/should do to diagnose whether its hard drive has major problems?

Thanks for your ideas,
Roger

Hi

You might be able to get more information on what went wrong by looking at the SMART data and recent SMART error logs. Even though it said SMART passed, it can pass even with some errors. It has to be very bad to fail :)

Get a copy of GSmartControl
http://prdownload.berlios.de/gsmartcontrol/gsmartcontrol-0.8.7-win32.zip?download
Unzip it and run gsmartcontrol.exe

Double-click your drive and click the VIEW OUTPUT button and copy and paste the resulting report in your reply so we can look at it.

Hi anonanon (Roger), Good name, I like it.

One quick addition to James's information.

I suggest backing up important data that you would hate to have go away. That could be Pictures, Music, documents, spreadsheets, Income tax info, movies and so on.

Good Luck

rotor 123 - Thanks; everything is backed up daily using Karen's Replicator.

James Litten -- I ran Gsmartcontrol and here is the output on the drive in question.  Does it tell you anything?

Hi

It looks good. I do see that it failed some Short Self Tests about 250 powered on hours ago (2793). Probably occurred during the LifeGuard test.

# 1 Short offline Completed: read failure 90% 2793 394851
# 2 Short offline Completed: read failure 90% 2793 394851

Current powered on hours is  3043

 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 096 096 000 Old_age Always - 3043

Can you go into Gsmartcontrol again and try running the Short Self Test on the Perform Tests tab and see if it fails again?

Other than that it appears that there is one (soft) bad sector which is pretty good for a drive that old and used.

James

James,

Sorry for the delay,  I ran the short self test and it said "completed with read failure".  Here's the log.  What do you think of it?

Roger

It looks like one really stubborn bad sector that won't be reallocated (reallocating would change the value of attribute#197 to 0 and the value of attribute #5 to 1).

Not too long ago, I fixed an old laptop that had 3 bad sectors like this. I used SeaTools (it was a Seagate drive) and had the same issue. I even made an image of the drive and got everything except the three stubborn sectors.

I ran chkdsk on the drive and Windows reported 12k (3 times 4k) in bad clusters and marked them so it would not be used by the OS and the drive has continued to perform without further problems.

If you run chkdsk on it (if you haven't already) it will mark the cluster as bad that the bad sector is in and not use it. You will probably be okay after that. The chkdsk report will say found 4k in bad clusters. That is because most Windows systems use 4k as the smallest unit of disk measure (a cluster) and the bad sector (which is only .5k) is in that 4k cluster.

Check again in a view weeks and if those attribute values for 197 and 5 are still 1 and 0 or even 0 and 1 you should be okay.

James

I'm trying to reactivate this thread because I have a related issue.  First of all, the hard drive has worked fine for the last 1.5 years.  Today when I booted up Win XP, I got an error message I'd never seen before.  It referred to a hard drive issue and mentioned S.M.A.R.T. (sorry, I didn't write down the exact message).  Press F1 to resume.  So I did, and it booted fine.  A second boot (Win XP restart) was normal; no error message.  Computer works normally.

I ran the SMART diagnostics (extended test) and got the results below.  Is there anything problematic about them?  Last year there was some concern about a few stubborn bad sectors that couldn't be reallocated.  I'm not worried about those if they're still there, because apparently they haven't caused any problems for the last year and a half.  Is there anything that suggests a serious problem with this hard drive?  They can be compared to the 2/27/13 test earlier in the thread.

Thanks,

Roger

Here is the link to the speccy snapshot:

Btw, it was the BIOS, not Windows XP, that produced the error message re SMART.

Thanks,

Roger

Did it say something like "SMART is disabled"?

Hi

Why not download and run the Western Digital WinDLG drive test.

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=605&sid=3&lang=en

It should run from within windows and allow You to test all the hard drives. I have used it recently to test and then zero out several different brands of hard drive, some internal and some in USB external cases.

Accept the License, Right Click on the drive to test, Pick Diagnostics, The Run the Quick test and the Extended test.

Report back.

Good Luck

Roger
