This issue is being transferred from Win 7 forum. Win 7/XP Virtual System. Sorry...I thought that I had just posted this but must have made an error as it is not on the forum.
This is in regard to internet conductivity on the Win 7 side of my system. There are no green bars in rt corner of screen but Network Center shows a full connection. Google opens and runs search but freezes system on trying to open page one of first site. Task Manager must be used to restart. No functionality. On virtual XP side Google does function "normally" and connection to internet seems to work well. Troubleshooting and strenous attempts to remove goole from the system have proved futile. Numerous in depth searching for and removing google files and still when connecting to internet google pops right up! I have disabled and replaced google as the default search provider to no avail. It is shown as disabled but doesn't seem to know it...I have to find out what is controlling google and remove them both. I am attaching DDS logs run on both sides of the system.
1. Windows 7 side:

Dell Inspiron 620 with Windows 7 on one side and virtual machine XP Professional on the other side.

Internet works well on XP side (guest), but not on the (host) side Win 7. First thought it was a network problem but google actually searches and then freezes only after opening the first page of a selected site in Win 7. Also realized that the internet was working on Win 7 but only at the direction of other programs, ie...Windows Update. I was directed in great detail how to remove every instance of google from system but no matter how many times I tryed to do so,...clicking on the internet brought google right up. I even removed it from the broser site as the default provider and replaced it as the default provider but to no avail. The logs are below for both sides of my system. I appreciate your help...

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Please download ComboFix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this web page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

IMPORTANT....

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Do not install any other programs until this if fixed.

How to : Disable Anti-virus and Firewall...
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt
Note:
Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.
===

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause infiltration of an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Search.
  • A log file will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt (n is a number).

Please post the logs for my review.

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus - optional" this is not required if you are not a McAfee subscriber. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.
===

Remove the AdWare, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed on your computer.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Everything that was found will be deleted.
  • Follow the prompts to reboot the computer. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt (n is a number)..

I do not normally service 2 different computer on the same topic.

Run the above instructions on both.

Submit the AdwCleaner logs.

Let me know of any remaining problems on the Windows 7.
===

If you have any remaining problems with the XP computer please start a new topic.
The removal of malware may not be the same for both.

Submit a fresh DDS log for that computer.
Post the URL (link) in your next reply. I will expedite the mattter.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough but you do understand don;'t you that this is only 1 computer??
The Win 7 side is the "host" and the XP side is the "guest". But the thing is that there is alot of cross over from and to each side and so I thought that you probably needed to check each side??
I cannot run the internet from the Win 7 side at present because google always crashes and I can't remove google (no idea what is aiding it). Internet and google work from the XP side and so I have to keep obtaining the programs to run from the XP side and then use a thumb drive to move them over to the Win 7 side to run. Then I have to move the results to the thumbdrive to return them to the XP side in order to send them out to you. Unbelieveably confusing....I am going blind myself. But I think that you now want me to drive and see if the Win 7 side internet now works??? I will try it.
Thanks again for all your patience and help.

I miss understool. I had in mind that XP was on it's own partition.

Looks like you are running something like this.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/

I checked both logs XP and Win 7 and can confirm that they are clean.

The only reference to Google in the XP side is the start page.

All the the Google processes and files are seen in your Windows 7 log.
However the path and filenames are missing from these entries.

BHO: Google Toolbar Helper: {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} -

Please run this tool on the Windows 7 side and post the log for my review.

Nasdaq,
Thanks as ever for your help. Yes, you are exactly right about the Windows 7 Pro with virtual machine containing XP! Sorry that I didn't adequately describe this..

I had been working with someone in the Win 7 forum because I was assuming that I had a network problem..I found that the internet was actually working on both sides of the system but that my search provider "google" was only working on the XP side;...it froze on opening the first page of anything it tryed to open on the Win 7 side. And that it must be google that had the problem as the system could access sites,..i.e. Windows update was keeping things up to date fine. This "seemed" to have happened right after I added security (password) to my router but I'm not totally certain that was relevent.
We tryed many things but finally the tech helper narrowed it down to google and that is when I found out that no matter what route I took I could not get this off of my system!
At that point I was redirected to this site....presuming that some malware was shielding
this rogue out of control google. I have had this problem for at least 3 mos but was trying through other means to troubleshoot it.....especially through SEVEN FORUMS.
When nothing worked I turned to bleeping. Below is the log from Windows 7:

Normally the Google BHO and TB registry should be populated with these entries.

BHO: Google Toolbar Helper: {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Google Toolbar\GoogleToolbar_32.dll
TB: Google Toolbar: {2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Google Toolbar\GoogleToolbar_32.dll
x64-BHO: Google Toolbar Helper: {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Google Toolbar\GoogleToolbar_64.dll

Let me check the Registry setting on these keys.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

If your operating system is 64 bit download this tool:
SystemLook_x64.exe
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy and paste the content of the following bold text into the main textfield:

    :regfind
    {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7}

    :filefind
    GoogleToolbar_32.dll
    GoogleToolbar_64.dll

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Please post the log for my review.

p.s.
I see that you installed the Revo removal tool on this computer.
Did you try to remove Google Chrome?

Sorry Nasdaq. I have tryed numerous times to download and run the SystemLook application from all sites and in 32bit for xp after the 64bit for Win 7 didn't work. When I double click I get "systemlook error" "script required" . I don't know if that means script is missing from ME or from the application?? I do not get a "SystemLook.exe" to click on.

The Revo removal tool is just left over from the Windows 7 Forum experiance. He gave it me to remove the tools that we were using. I haven't tryed to remove Google Chrome......but I just received that "gift" by mistake yesterday when I updated adobe reader and I WILL be removing it so I might as well try that now!

Do you think that all the different efforts made to remove google could have anything to do with the missing info? It certainly starts without whats missing so I guess not.

Let me know about SystemLook. Thanks

When I double click I get "systemlook error" "script required" . I don't know if that means script is missing from ME or from the application??

Right click on the .exe file and run as Administrator.
Can you now paste this:

:regfind
{AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7}

:filefind
GoogleToolbar_32.dll
GoogleToolbar_64.dll

and continue with the search?

p.s. just execute this in the Windows 7 since Google Chrome is not working in that Operating System.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

DDS::
uStart Page = hxxp://www.google.com/
uSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie
uSearchURL,(Default) = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q=%s

x64-TB: Google Toolbar: {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} -

Save this as CFScript.txt on your desktop.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Let me know what problem persists.

Quoted from a personal message.

I can't seem to send you another post from my problem list so don't know how to thank you!! I have been stymied by this for too long.
I guess you must answer my last post before I can post??
My question is..what do you think I had? And is it safe to try to download google again? If you do post I won't be able to reply immediately as I have jury duty tomorrow. the internet is working for the first time on this system...in at least 3 mos. Thank you, thank you for your experitse and willingness to help others!

My question is..what do you think I had? And is it safe to try to download google again?

All I know is what you told me.

What is your situation with Google Chrome.
Has it been removed completely from the Windows 7 and the Virtual PC/XP side.

Can you execute it from either side?

Where was it installed the last time on the Windows 7 or the XP...

As you can see from the registry search these are all Windows 7 (x86) side.

Nasdaq, Sorry just finished two days of jury duty. Before that I wrote you that it was fixed., that not Google but MSN and Bing was coming up on the =Win 7 side and most amazingly I could use the search engine and nothing hung at all. I wrote to you on that side of the system. Tonight when I logged on and tryed the internet on Win 7 side, it still seems google free. MSN comes up, Bing searches and then The System hangs again! I did a search for Google files or folders and found nothing. I found nothing for Google Chrome either.

So then I tryed the xp side and hitting internet immediately brought up google and it works fine,...just as before. So now I am writing to you from there again. Google Chrome is not evident here but just Google. Did we try to eliminate it from this side or just from the Seven Side? I just don't understand why MSN worked two nights ago and no one has used it between then and now,--yet now that is behaving much as google did on the Win 7 side.
