It seems that I have the FBI Virus. I am not able to get into safe mode. I have tried creating rescue USBs to scan windows with, but none have worked. I have tried Avira Antivir Rescue System, BitDefender Rescue, Kaspersky Rescue Disk, and Panda Safe CD. The only change that has occurred is that now when the FBI screen pops up, it just says that the page cannot be displayed, just like if the web browser is sent to a wrong website.

Is there anything I can do?

Thank you for your help.

PS- I am running Windows XP Service pack 3.

I have run into this virus on many occasions. Newer variants of this virus are a little more tricky, as they disable Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking (and Command Prompt).

I found success by pulling the hard drive from the system and connecting to another system and running Norton Power Eraser (http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.aspx). Yes, surprisingly enough a Norton product was more effective on this particular virus. The scan can take some time, but I highly recommend allowing it to do the entire scan. Afterwards, put drive back into your computer and run the usual programs on Bleeping -- combofix, Malwarebytes, EMSISOFT, etc.

I hope this helps!

Thank you for the fast response. Unfortunately, I am very uncomfortable with removing the hard drive from this computer as I have never done anything like that before. I suspect that I probably do not have the proper tools to do so anyway. Also, I'm not sure how to hook it up to another computer after the removal. I apologize for seeming dense, but without knowing what I am doing it seems as though it would be very easy to permanently damage something. I am very reluctant to get into that type of repair work myself. Is there another way that does not involve removing the hard drive?

Again, thank you for the reply. I do appreciate it.

No problem at all, I understand your concern. If you've never done it before I don't recommend it.

I would suggest following these instructions and see how it turns out for you:

I apologize for the delay getting back to you. It has been a little difficult finding a computer that I can hang on to for any length of time. I have one now. I read the instructions from the link that you just posted, but Emsisoft requires the program to be run in safe mode, which I am not able to get into, with or without command prompt or networking. I tried downloading the program to a USB stick to boot from, but apparently this cannot be used as a bootable USB.

If there are absolutely no other options, then I suppose I could try to take out the hard drive. Obviously as a completely last resort though.

Additionally, if I was to hook my hard drive to the healthy computer, could I run the risk of infecting healthy one too?

Thank you.

Neither.

When I boot normally the FBI virus locks my computer. Although it doesn't display the Moneypak garbage now. It just looks like a broken webpage. Regardless, I am still not able to do anything but shut down the computer.

When I try to get to safe mode- with networking, without networking, or in command prompt- my system freezes up when loading drivers needed to get into safe mode.

Most of the rescue USBs that I have made have found the virus. Some are able to delete the virus, some aren't. It must regenerate somehow though, because every time I reboot into windows, the virus is back. I can't recall whether it was Avira or Kaspersky that stopped the virus from displaying the Moneypak stuff, but that is really the only permanent effect that any of them have had.

Thank you very much. I appreciate the help.

Also, if it is of any use- I have created a JoliCloud USB that will allow me to boot and run linux completely from the USB, but it will also allow me to look through my hard drive.

I was thinking it might be possible to save a program, like maybe a diagnostic program or repair program, to my infected hard drive and run it using the Linux USB. I think WINE is an option with Joli, but I am really guessing at all of this. I have never used Linux before and don't know how the two would interact.

Just figured I'd throw it out there.

I will wait for further instruction or ideas before fiddling with anything.

Thank you again.

Hi, :welcome:

Lets give it a try.

We will need to view the system status from an external environment. You will need a USB drive and a CD to burn. There will be several steps to follow.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Next download driver.sh to your USB drive
  • Also Download Query.exe to the USB drive. In your working computer, navigate to the USB drive and click on the Query.exe. A folder and a file, query.sh, will be extracted.
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert them in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • In some computers you need to tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD, in others is the Esc key. Please consult your computer's documentation.
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Then type bash driver.sh -af
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    Winlogon.exe

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    volsnap.sys

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    explorer.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    Userinit.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After the search is completed type Exit and press Enter.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt
  • While still in the Open Terminal, type bash query.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as RegReport.txt
  • Then type dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.txt bs=512 count=1

Leave a space among the following Statements:

dd is the executable application used to create the backup
if=/dev/sda is the device the backup is created from - the hard drive when only one HDD exists
of=mbr.txt is the backup file to create - note the lack of a path - it will be created in the directory currently open in the Terminal
bs=512 is the number of bytes in the backup
count=1 says to backup just 1 sector

It is extremely important that the if and of statements are correctly entered.

  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as mbr.bin
  • Plug the USB back into the clean computer, and post the contents of the report.txt, filefind.txt and RegReport.txt in your next reply. The mbr.txt must be attached to your reply.

No request for help throughout private messaging will be attended.

The logs above look clear. How long back this is happening?

Download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/rst.sh to the USB drive
  • Boot the Sick computer to xPUD again
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • Expand your USB (sdb1)
  • Confirm that you see rst.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash rst.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive (sdb1) named enum.log
  • Plug that USB back into the clean computer and open it
