My pc is running slow and some software will not even open. Following the advise on this forum I have run HijackThis and below is the results.

I have installed SpySweeper, Windows Defender and have McAfee and none of these seem to clear the problem. My McAfee privacy log shows that as soon as I connect to the internet I connect to searchmeup.com and 69.50.160.102. When I type this into google it linked to something with a disturbing adult content. Please advise! I am desperate. My CPU usage is at a constant 100% and iexplorer.exe is at 97 or 98%.

I have looked for the registry keys from other website and this one but they are not on my PC. Is there any hope???!?!

I am sure I have a lot of rubbish on my PC as a result of a) being a bit of a computer novice and b) letting other people use it.

HijackThis results

Hi Regieboy,

Welcome to BC. I am sorry but you have real nasty in there evidenced by the following entry:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [runsvc32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\runsvc32.exe

It's called WORM_AGOBOT.QJ . It's a worm with backdoor capabilities. Logs keystrokes. Your computer and your personal data may have been compromised. If you are part of a network, the other computers may also have been compromised. You can read more about it here:

http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyc...OT%2EQJ&VSect=P

They may have only been interested in stealing some product keys, but the potential for a full identity theft is a possibility since this worm is capable of keylogging.

This is the standard warning for cases such as yours . . . .

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately :

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

Things may not be as bad as they sound, but you should be aware that this type of malware is/was on your machine.

Hi amateur

Thanks for the reply - worrying as it is!

My McAfee Security Center does highlight this W32/IRCbot.worm! But states that up-to-date virus scan users are protected and just gives information about the worm - the symptoms that it states ie that the computer may restart automatically has never happened to me - my PC is just SLOW and has the searchmeup.com connection in privacy log. This message has appeared on the Security Center screen for weeks so I have not worried about it - I assumed it was for general information regarding this worm!

I have not had any erroneous bank/credit card items.

I am currently running The Stinger from McAfee to see if it identifies anything - this may be a dumb question, but why haven't McAfee, Windows Defender, Bulletproof or SpySweeper identified or cleaned this?

Also is the following item anything to worry about:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{1701972D-000A-4C3C-83B1-F653E715E2D4}: NameServer = 80.189.92.2 80.189.94.2

Thanks for your help

reggieboy

The Stinger did not find anything. The main symptoms now is that other software (Word, Excel, even the screensaver) is slow or fails to respond. Once I connect to the internet it is as fast as normal. (???)

Hi Regieboy,

If you've read the "technical details" tab of the link I gave you about this worm, you will see the full extent of maliciousness of this worm. It may also explain why your antivirus and other security software may not have been functioning properly. I have no way of knowing to what extend this worm has been active on your machine.

The Stinger did not find anything.

This is not a kind of worm that Stinger is effective with.

Also is the following item anything to worry about:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{1701972D-000A-4C3C-83B1-F653E715E2D4}: NameServer = 80.189.92.2 80.189.94.2

Not unless your Service Provider is not GR-NET, GB (brightview.com).

While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we can't guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing what has been done to the computer. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

If you are fully aware of the risks and still wish to try to clean your computer, please do the following:

========================================

Download the LSP Fix just in case you lose your Internet connection as a result of removing BulletProofSoft.com. It shouldn't happen and this is just a precaution but if it does, run the LSP Fix to get the connection back and click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox. (Don't do anything else). Only run this tool if you lose your Internet connection. Then click Finish.

========================================

Please go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove the following:

C:\Program Files\BulletProofSoft.com

SpywareRemover is a rogue program. See: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

========================================

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.

========================================

Download and install Ewido Anti-Malware

During the installation, uncheck the following under Additional Options:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Check for updates but do not run it yet.

========================================

We'll need to disable Spysweeper and Windows Defender so that they will not interfere with the fix:
Spysweeper:
1. Open Spysweeper and click on Options > Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup".
2. On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything there.
3. Uncheck "home page shield".
4. Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
5. Exit the program.

Windows Defender:
1. Click on "Tools"
2. Click on "General Settings"
3. Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
4. Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
5. Click "Save"

Your Antivirus may also see the change during the fix and give a popup window asking for confirmation. Please allow the change.

========================================

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Look in here for more information.

========================================

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against tshe following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://home.microsoft.com/search/lobby/search.asp
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://home.microsoft.com/access/allinone.asp

Close all other browsers/windows, etc., except HijackThis and click on "fix checked". Exit HijackThis but stay on Safe Mode.

========================================

From Safe Mode, using Windows Explorer (right click on start, click on "explore"), navigate to and delete the following fileand folder:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\runsvc32.exe
C:\Program Files\BulletProofSoft.com

========================================

From Safe Mode run ATF cleaner
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".

Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.

Firefox :
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Opera :
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.

========================================

Run Ewido.
Click on Scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says 'Perform action with all infections' then choose clean and click OK.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report - click it.
Save the report.txt file to your desktop.

Now close Ewido-Anti-Malware.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, DO NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!

========================================

Reboot in Normal Mode and

Download the Hoster from here.
UnZip the file and run hoster then press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

Warning: if you use a customized hosts file to block certain sites then this will overwrite all those entries as well and you will need to re enter them

========================================

Hi amateur

I have done what you said above, and below are the logs. However I was unable to remove bulletproofsoft using "add or remove programs". I received the message "Cannot delete AppToPort.dll. Make sure it is not write protected or in use". Also the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32|runsvc32.exe was not present.

Already the computer seems faster, but I am concerned about the items found by Kaspersky, especially as Zlob was apparently cleaned by spysweeper the other day!!!

Thanks again for your support and advice.

Hi Reggieboy,

Thanks for the logs.

I am concerned about the items found by Kaspersky, especially as Zlob

Dont' worry about it. It's in the System Restore. It cannot harm you at the moment. We'll clean it from there as well once we get the rest cleaned up.

First of all, HijackThis is still unzipped and running from a temp directory.

Please read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
Create a permanent folder and move hijackthis.exe into it. The reason is because hijackthis creates backups and when it's in your temp-folder it can be accidentally deleted.
How do you make a permanent folder:

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then on Program Files.
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Put your HijackThis.exe there.

======================

Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and remove

SpywareRemover

Then, using Windows Explorer, navigate to and delete the folder.

C:\Program Files\BulletProofSoft.com\SpywareRemover

======================

Please run Notepad and paste the following text inside the Code box into a new file: It's important that you use notepad, not wordpad.

attrib -r -h -s C:\dimsxx.chm/on-line.exe
del C:\dimsxx.chm/on-line.exe
attrib -r -h -s C:\dimsxx.chm CHM
del C:\dimsxx.chm CHM
attrib -r -h -s C:\dimxx.chm/on-line.exe
del C:\dimxx.chm/on-line.exe
attrib -r -h -s C:\dimxx.chm CHM
del C:\dimxx.chm CHM
attrib -r -h -s C:\stasxx.chm/on-line.exe
del C:\stasxx.chm/on-line.exe
attrib -r -h -s C:\stasxx.chm CHM
del C:\stasxx.chm CHM
attrib -r -h -s C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32|runsvc32.exe
del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32|runsvc32.exe

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files". Then please go to the desktop and double-click on remove.bat.

======================

Download and update:

Spybot S & D

Remember to "immunize" after updating so that the latest definitions can be enabled.

a. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
b. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
c. Click the button to 'Search for Updates' then download and install the Updates.
d. Next click the button 'Check for Problems'
e. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries, BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window.
f. Make sure that there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
g. Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

If it has trouble removing any spyware, you will get a message window, asking if it would be ok to run Spybot - S&D on the next reboot before any other applications start running. You should reply Yes to this. The next time you start Windows, Spybot will run automatically and fix any of the programs it could not fix previously.

At this point you will be presented with the list of found entries again, but now there will be large green checkmarks next to the items that Spybot - S&D was able to remove. The ones that are still checked but do not have the large green checkmark next to them will be fixed on the next reboot of windows.

h. REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.

======================

Here is the new HJT log and kaspersky report.

I am still not able to delete Bulletproof Adware & Spyware Remover completely. I have now used Add/Remove programs and accepted that removal and I have deleted all components of the folder except AppToPort.dll.

Hi Reggieboy,

It's looking better.

.... in terms of speed it is like having my old computer back!

I am glad to hear that.

You might like to print this out for reference when you are disconnected from the internet.

Now, let's run the LSPFix which you downloaded earlier.

" Disconnect from the Internet and close all Internet Explorer and Explorer Windows.
" Run the program.
" On the opening screen, click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.
" Check all instances of apptoport.dll (and nothing else)
" Move them to the "Remove" pane.
" Then click Finish and OK.

reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

===========================

In Safe Mode

Find and delete the following file:

c:\windows\system\apptoport.dll

===========================

Run ATF Cleaner again.

===========================

Uninstall BulletProofSoft via the Add/Remove Programs in Control panel, if listed:

===========================

Locate and delete the following folder if exists:

c:\program files\bulletproofsoft.com

===========================

Restart in Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log please.

Below is the new HijackThis Log. Please note that apptoport.dll did not exist anywhere in c:\windows.

Please note that I keep getting the following message from Windows Defender of Possible Host File Hijack:

Category:
Spyware

Description:
This program has potentially unwanted behavior.

Advice:
Review the alert details to see why the software was detected. If you do not like how the software operates or if you do not recognize and trust the publisher, consider blocking or removing the software.

Please note that apptoport.dll did not exist anywhere in c:\windows.

That's good. I think we got rid of that for good.

I would like to know if you really need to have your internet explorer main page set to Tesco. Windows Defender may be flagging that.

Review the alert details to see why the software was detected. If you do not like how the software operates or if you do not recognize and trust the publisher, consider blocking or removing the software..

Please post the alert details with the name of the software and let's see what it is.

==============================

Scan with HijackThis. Close all browsers and fix the following entries: You'll need to either disable Windows Defender and Spysweeper during the fix, or give permission when they warn you.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Tesco internet access
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.tesco.net
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

Reboot and see if you are still getting the warning from Windows Defender.

==============================

Please download hoster from the link below.
Download the Hoster Here: http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

Please do not use program yet

Unzip Hoster to your desktop

Open up the Hoster program.

* Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
* Click back up Host files
* then click Restore orginal host files
* Close program when complete.

Warning: if you use a customized hosts file to block certain sites then this will overwrite all those entries as well and you will need to re enter them

==============================

Let me know how the computer is running now.

I do not need Tesco to be set to the main page. I have fixed that as you describe. Tesco were my old dial-up internet provider from over a year ago, but I still have their icon spinning around and their name on the windows banner!

I have also run hoster as described. you did not ask for ut but here is a new HijackThis Log. The computer is fine. You are a star! Thanks so much for your help. It is a great relief to be able to use the computer as normal without waiting five minutes for anything to open (if at all).

For your information Windows Defender does not seem to give any details as to the details of software that Windows Defender is apparently detecting. When I turned on the pc just now I never got the message (which was before doing anything you suggested in the last post) but when I opened WD it still states:

"Detected Items Medium/Low alert level" and says to review the items. When I do that it simply states

Possible Hosts Hijack File

Category:
Spyware

Description:
This program has potentially unwanted behavior.

Advice:
Review the alert details to see why the software was detected. If you do not like how the software operates or if you do not recognize and trust the publisher, consider blocking or removing the software.

The good news . The log is clean.

You have Windows Defender, Ewido guard and Spysweeper are all running at the same time. Since they are all checking for the same things, they may cause false positives.

If Spysweeper is the trial version, I would suggest that you uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. If you paid for it, then use it as an on-call scanner, not a real-time scanner.

Ewido is also a trial version. I asked you to set it up not to have the background guard, but you seem to have checked the guard. Please set it up the way I suggested and keep the program for scanning.

During the installation, uncheck the following under Additional Options:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

If you want to trim down the startup list:
you will find that much of what normally runs on startup is not necessary! Most things can be run manually. Googling the various items will give you a good idea of what you can safely disable. I am not familiar with the items that you use on a regular basis and might want to leave. Download Startup Inspector from here
This program will help you to decide exactly what programs you disable from running at startup.
The Readme.txt file included has instructions on how to use it.

Since you had a keylogger to begin with, I would like to have one last scan.

Download Blacklight Beta from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
Wait for it to finish.
If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl....big number
Please post contents of that log.

Here are the results for blbeta

03/30/06 20:54:20 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.33 initialized
03/30/06 20:54:20 [Info]: OS: 5.1 build 2600 (Service Pack 2)
03/30/06 20:54:20 [Note]: 7019 4
03/30/06 20:54:20 [Note]: 7005 0
03/30/06 20:54:23 [Note]: 7006 0
03/30/06 20:54:23 [Note]: 7011 1188
03/30/06 20:54:23 [Note]: FSRAW library version 1.7.1015
03/30/06 20:55:42 [Note]: 7007 0

Looks good, yes?

As per your suggestion I have removed several items from start up.

As for Ewido - I cannot see how I can change it now. Do I need to re-install it, or I have the option to "remove guard" is that the same as "unchecking background guard"? If so, I can do that but what about "install scan via context menu"?
